Sharla Butler's Emotional Victory Lap

sharla.jpgI've been in the television busines for 20 years now. And the story we ran last night on Lancaster's Sharla Butler is probably the most emotional I've ever covered:

Sharla's Story

The strength of the family to open up to me and share their grief was uncommon and brave. They were intent on creating a lasting tribute to Sharla. Speaking of... Sharla's "Victory Lap" at Beverly D. Humphrey stadium Saturday was something I'll never forget.

Text version of the story.

And I didn't even get into this in the story, but Sharla was developing into a future star. Lancaster coach Beverly Humphrey expected Sharla to run the 400 meters in :55 this year and eventually into the low 54's. Sharla putting in the work it took to become a state champion. And while we'll never know if that would have happened, this much is certain, Sharla Butler left a lasting impact on every she knew. And some of us she didn't.

I am very sorry for your lost! Sharla seemed to be a nice and sweet young lady!! Looking at your story, I believe she is in a better place. I pray for the family, friends and others that she touched while she was here on earth. I pray for peace for you all. As I'm sure she ran her last VICTORY RACE!! God bless you all!! May peace be with you!

To the Butler family, I am also sorry for your loss. As I had not the chance of meeting your daugther. Yet my daugther did briefly, and says that she was an awesome person, (and that she want to be able to run the way she did, she wants to be just like her) . I can say that being at the funeral and seeing you guys. That you know the Lord, and I really don't have to say much, because you already know. Yet that I love you guy and praise God for the impact that Charla has made in this world.Praise God for families such as yours. Stay strong, and I pray that God will let me carry some of this borden for you guys. I Love you all.......Lunda

Beautiful tribute. Beautiful athlete and young woman. Beautiful family. Unfortunate ending for Sharla and the Butlers. Nevertheless, she's found her rightful place in heaven.

I am so terribly sorry for your lost. Though i never met Sharla Butler i believe i ran with her last year at regionals and at the Texas Relays. She was an amazing runner and outstanding athlete. What touched me the most is how dedicated she was to the 400m. I too run the 400m it is a very hard race to run and you have to have a whole lot of strength and confidence just to make it threw that last lap and i know Sharla did. I wish i knew her as a person but i know she's in a much better place where she would have no worries.
May God bless you all for your lost and take care threw this hard time.
R.I.P Sharla...

To the Butler family I am very sorry for your loss. The bond that me and Sharla shared from a distance was not just due to me knowing her sister but because we are and always will LancSter Lady Tigers. Save a spot for me babygirl in that shot-put & discus ring.
