Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones starting his 21st year as owner of this football team and it should have been a celebration, but it's not because of what the Cowboys have become. Jones wants to win -- I get that - but only if he can win doing it his way. It didn't start out that way. Two Super Bowls in the first five years, but then as former coach Jimmy Johnson said, Jones wanted to be part of the fun. Making money wasn't enough. He wanted to be a football guy making football decisions. And the winning soon stopped. I've said it before, and it needs to be said again, there are32 teams in the NFL and not a single one of the other 31 would hire Jones to be their general manager in part because four of the six coaches he's hired couldn't get a job with a single one of 'em, either. And the two who could get another job, did. Jerry Jones, Cincinnati's Mike Brown and Oakland's Al Davis are the only three owners who double as the general manager. Are we really to believe that Jones and Brown and Davis know something the other 29 owners don't? They prove to us almost every year now they don't. The Cowboys are so bad now Jones has put a gag order on everybody at Valley Ranch but him. He apparently can't trust his coaches to say the right thing anymore. If you can't trust your most important people to say the right thing then you have the wrong people, and Jones usually does. He said in the mid 90's when so many players were getting in trouble on a regular basis he got it, character matters. The image does too. It was one of the main reasons he didn't draft Randy Moss. If he did get it then, why doesn't he get it now? The law breakers like Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson don't win. The selfish guys like Terrell Owens don't either. Talent's not enough in this league, it never has been and never will be. Players who care about one another, who care about a team agenda more than their own, players who know the coach and owner will hold them accountable if they fail -- and are a little afraid if they do -- make a difference in this league Twenty years as an owner in the NFL, all the problem players Jones has had and he's never suspended a single one. The league has, but Jones never does. His players know the money's good because Jones is good at making money -- a lot of owners are -- but 29 of the 32 owners let the football guys make the football decisions because they know the real fun is in the winning. It used to be that way when Jimmy Johnson coached here. He made the football decisions and it was fun back then. Jerry Jones makes the football decisions now and it's not much fun anymore. So true and obvious, but one's mans ego will continue to collapse this team and building a shrine won't solve any of those issues. Jerry would do best focusing his energies to a little soul searching and make a decision on what he is more passionate about the Cowboys or his continual failing effort of trying to prove he is all that is needed to make this team a winner again.
I'm a greybeard who remembers Vaughn Meador, THE FIRST FAMILY, about the Kennedy's.
"When you play here, you play by my rules. It's my ball, that's why."
Jones owes his customers nothing. It's his money, his team, his ball. If you don't like the way he runs his company, go watch something else. Why is that a problem for you to understand?
listening to Hansen run off at the mouth is no longer fun either .
As usual, Hansen SAYS what most of us are thinking. I'm not even a real sports fan, but even I can see what the Jones ego has done to this team, along his poor player selection choices. Talent AND character built teams and win games. Money and ego build new stadiums. Too bad this great, new stadium won't have a great team to call it home.
Jerry, go away. I'm done with you. All the puppets you hire should be smart enough to say no to you. You let Parcels make a team for you and now you are breaking it apart. AGAIN!!!!
Get the Sunday Ticket. It will ease the pain.
I was outside the News 8 Studio the night of the Jerry Jones interview and watched (no sound) most of it through the window. What shocked me was that after the interview, not even a handshake between Jerry and Dale. The interview was over and Dale walked off to the back room. As Dale said, Jerry was a hell of a man to do the interview and I could tell that there is no friendship between the two of them. I guess that Jerry needs Dale more than Dale needs Jerry???
Completely agreed. Jerry Jones never did anything really earth shaking for the Cowboys team, not ever. He bought into the T.A. dream team, he didn't make it. He's a genius when it comes to marketing but he doesn't stop at that, he has to have control over aspects most owners hire people with expertise to control. He is not a responsible owner, that's the problem.
The only thing Jerry Jones is responsible is the failure of our beloved team. End of story.
Don't buy his tickets and he will fade away.
Once again... boycott all things Cowboy... including his sponsors, Ford, Pepsi, Nike, American Express and Bank of America, and tell them why you are not doing business with them. Don't buy anything with a blue star. Hit him where it hurts, and boycott any company dumb enough to buy the naming rights at Jerrys hole. Make him regret buying the team.
Here's a quote from Scott Pioli speaking to the Kansas City press after he got the Chiefs GM job. I'd like to ask JJones about it next time he brags about his "Thirteen pro-bowlers"...
"My job is not to collect talent, it’s to build a team. Individuals make Pro Bowls, teams win championships. That’s our goal here. Win championships, win football games - to build this team with the right kind of people, with the right kind of players, to consistently compete for championships"
The new stadium and all its surrounding hoopla are not even fun anymore...nor will it be what it could have been if Jones had not become who he is currently. The Cowboys are losing their appeal... and I am deftly afraid of them becoming a "who they once were" team that fades off and never makes it again to the championships all for the sake of becoming an entertainment venue / money-making machine. Maybe we SHOULD hit Jones where it hurts...where there is no money, there is no reason for him to stay.
Keep bringing the heat, Dale. Something has to give. The man has to see that he is bringing this storied franchise to it's knees. All by himself.

Hey Hall, Jerry doesn't owe the fans anything? I think it is you that don't understand. True it is his team but the money he makes in football comes from the fans who in texas go to the games. The fans all around the country who support and buy the Dallas merchandise. If you don't think the continued loosing and bad decesions are not going to hurt attendance in that new stadium you are crazy. Sure they will go at first out of curiosty, but after that who wants to waiste their money? That is what the players don't understand. Yes they have talent but it is the fans coming to see you play that pay your salary.Too many celebrities don't get that. And for the record I say this about Jerry and I support the guy,but I recently said the same exact thing in this article; that these choices are exposing Jerry's weakness as a GM.Always trying to find the diamond in the rough instead of identifying the true diamond and buying it.
I miss the fun times when Jimmy Johnson was the "real" coach. The Cowboys ruled then...they won games, they won championships... they won Superbowls. I don't even watch the games anymore. I buy nothing "Cowboys" for any of my grandchildren. I hate to admit it, born and raised in Dallas, Texas, but we buy Steelers stuff now. And Jerry Jones is the reason why!!
Jerry Jones has been riding on the coattails of the glory days ever since. He needs to admit he is not a GM or a coach! He is just an owner, but it sure is a shame to watch a rich boy buy his own team and tear it down and can't admit to himself or the world that he can't make it... Dale Hansen's interview proved that. I couldn't believe my ears when Jerry Jones sat there and said "that's not my style"!!!! OMG - and other GM's don't take the risks he takes??? I guess taking the risk that somebody will buy tickets in his new stadium is a great big risk alright!! I wonder how many tears he'll shed when the stadium is empty one day...
But I really miss the excitement of watching the boys play like they did when Jimmy Johnson was the coach!! Those are stories I tell my grandson.
Dale Hansen, you make me wish for those days again... but then we'd need a different owner and GM huh?
I am a Cowboy fan, however, I've had more than enough of Jerry Jones and the adverse affect he has burdened our Cowboy Team with.
I find that all of the negative criticism Jerry Jones absorbs, only fuels his fire, (EGO)
He is banking on a day that will never materialize, the day he will tell everyone,... "I told you so!"
"I am the Cowboys owner and GM; it's with my money, and through my management style and selection of players, the reason we won this title".
Jerry, Wake Up!..leave the recruitment, staffing, management, coaching, counseling, discipline and attitude adjustment to the professionals that through years of toil, blood, sweat and tears, have earned the credentials of being a successful GM and or Coach.
They have the vast experience, and knowledge of what it takes to structure, and win football games and titles.
Let us be proud again, of the dynasty, the legend built by Coach Tom Landry.
He was a true inspiration and competent professional, who was passionate about the game, tough, but fair with his players and coaches.
He earned what you can not purchase,..."Respect".
It was the respect that everyone had for Coach Landry that propelled each player and coach to their highest level of "Team Performance".
No one will ever fill Coach Landry's shoes.
You like all successful business professionals, must surround yourself with the best of the best, and you have the money to do it with. (Spend it wisely)
You also need to provide them the latitude to manage what it is you pay them to do.
Thereafter, praise them and or hold them accountable for the end result.
Do not settle for and sign a "Player Gone Bad", only because of his athleticism.
Disregarding his ill past and lack of commitment to being a resourceful "Team Player" is a discredit to the team and organization.
Everyone of these type players detract from the positive and professional image our Dallas Cowboys should consistently project.
Our country and team is in dire need of trust worthy "Team Players", and "Role Models".
They are what what makes us proud and enable us to be constructive, mold and build from in a positive manner.
Jerry, you've built an "Awesome Stadium", now it's time for you to set the "EGO" aside.
Hire a competent GM, with a proven track record, and re-build what used to be, an "Awesome Team, America's Team,....the Dallas Cowboys".
Dale, keep on plugging...
Sometimes calling it like it is, may be offensive and hurtful to some, and they are blinded by it.
To others it may open their eyes, broaden their minds, see and understand why things are what they are, and do something constructive to rectify the problem at hand.
Some people did not get it yesterday, today, or will they ever get it in the future.
Best Regards,
JFG
Last week when channel 8 aired Hansen's interview with Jimmy Johnson, Hansen said the interview was originally going to be played the following week but they moved up the air date for reasons that would become clear by Sunday night.
So what happened??
Dale was talking about the interview with Jerry Jones that aired Thursday night, the night the Jimmy Johnson interview was initially scheduled to air.
How in the world can Dale Hansen say anything about an "EGO".
Who listens to Dale Hansen anyways?
His ego is bigger than Jerry Jones and Terrell Owens combined.
Not everything Jerry has done is wrong like many of you seem to think, he did buy the team at a time when the two old war-horses of the franchise had become shell's of their former selves, the entire organization was at a low ebb.
Now, for all of his shortcomings Jerry is a tireless promoter and salesman, he has done way more good for the Cowboys and our community than it sounds like many of you are willing to acknowledge. Just look at this state of the art facility he has built, one thing you will never be able to say about o'l Jerry is the he won't put his money where his mouth is, because he will.
But, I think you have to separate OUT Jerry the successful OWNER of America's team from Jerry the failed General Manager, there is NO question that he needs to turn that over to a Football guy, and go back to being the OWNER, Fly on the Wall, and all around great guy, and leave the Football to the Football men. Jerry has made a number of bone headed moves in his time here in the Metroplexico the least of which certainly was not getting rid of Jimmy, but it was definitely the first boneheaded move.
If, I could fix one thing about Jerry Jones it would be to reign in his tendency to try and punch above above his weight when it comes to the General Managership, and all things FOOTBALL, Jerry's a businessman and that's that, and I hope someday he will realize this fact, but I wouldn't place a wager on it...
