NFL free agency and the off-season is just getting started and the rumor mill is already going. Former ESPN reporter Armando Salguero, now of the Miami Herald, says the Cowboys and Dolphins could be swapping players and draft picks again. He sees Bobby Carpenter, a first-round pick by current Dolphins executive Bill Parcells in 2006 for the Cowboys, as a player that maybe has some skill but hasn't gotten the full opportunities here. First-round picks aren't supposed to be special teams players. Carpenter should be a starter on the defense. If he's not, it probably is in the team's best interest to move him. However, they won't get much in return and certainly nothing near a top draft pick. There's another problem. The Cowboys could be quite thin at linebacker, especially inside linebacker. Zach Thomas will probably leave. Kevin Burnett is a free agent and gets hurt a lot. After that they have Justin Rogers, also a special teams guy. That's not much next to Bradie James. Of course if the Cowboys do get Ray Lewis or another free agent, the dynamic changes, but don't count on that. Here's what Salguero has to say. |
