Ok, so the Cardinals and Steelers aren't the most glamorous teams to ever play in a Super Bowl. In fact, some are calling it "Super Bore 43". Nothing could be further from the truth. Year after year, the Super Bowl gives us the most unlikely matchups, with cinderella stories and teams that scratched their way to the big game. When was the last time the two "best" teams in the NFC and AFC made it all the way? Perhaps Super Bowl XXXIX four years ago, when the Eagles met the Patriots in Jacksonville. Before that? The Rams and Patriots, three years prior...maybe. The Super Bowl almost always gives us a team that "wasn't supposed to be there." This year, that team is the Arizona Cardinals...in a major way. The Cowboys were supposed to be there. Of course, we all know how that turned out. And that's why the big game reminds us, more than any other, that it's the two best "teams" that make it all the way. And it's often an unlikely hero who emerges. Remember David Tyree with his circus catch for the Giants. Dexter Jackson and his interceptions for the Buccaneers. Desmond Howard for the Packers in Super Bowl XXXI. That's what makes the Super Bowl so great, and the game so meaningful. When the day is over, and the chicken wings have been eaten, and the chips and salsa are spilled onto the kitchen table, it's the battle between two teams that makes it great. Not individuals seeking glory. It's not like the World Series or NBA Finals, where a handful of star players are put in the spotlight and expected to produce. The Super Bowl is the ultimate democratic championship game. Anyone can be a star. |
