| 17, one Cowboy named Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists »
At least, that's what many Cowboy fans would like to be saying, in the hopes that Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett does indeed leave to become new Head Coach of the Denver Broncos. You also have to be thinking that, privately, Jerry Jones is hoping the same thing. Just like he's hoping Wade Phillips will walk into his office and announce his resignation as Cowboys Head Coach. Will either happen? The likeliest bet has Garrett leaving, but don't count on it. The Broncos are interviewing a veritable slew of NFL assistants, some of whom appear to be better fits than the Cowboys' once offensive mastermind. It speaks volumes that Jones allowed Garrett to interview for the Denver position. A year ago, he did everything he could to make sure Garrett did not leave to take the Baltimore head coaching vacancy. Obviously, Jerry doesn't feel the same way towards his former golden boy anymore. If I'm Jason Garrett, I just can't picture what to say in that Denver interview. "Hello Mr. Bowlen...nice to meet you, I'm Jason. Our offense ranked just 13th in the NFL, despite having a star at every position. We missed the playoffs and our star quarterback turned the ball over with alarming regularity." "When can you start?!!" I don't think so. I wish Garrett the best of luck where-ever he goes, I really do. But Cowboy fans have lost faith in him and I think the players have as well. If you listened to Tony Romo and T-O these last few weeks in postgame interviews, it is very clear they were calling out Garrett. If Jason does stay, he has to become more creative and play to the Cowboys' strengths. That means getting the ball in the hands of his playmakers. The running game should be emphasized....the Cowboys have three excellent backs. There should be less pressure and emphasis on Romo. He isn't Peyton Manning or Drew Brees and this isn't the Indianapolis Colts or New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys must build a new offensive identity. Or it will again be...."so long, Jason." |
