Martellus Bennett "Apology" Rings False

I was mildly amused to witness Martellus Bennett's cringe-inducing attempts at a rap video this week, posted on YouTube. Both the original rap and the ensuing "apology rap" were hideous creations, sore on the ears, and not particularly inventive.

But the most interesting part of all this is when Martellus blamed the media in his apology. Martellus blaming the media? He picked up a camera, set it on top of his laptop and talked into it. He recorded a song and offered his perspective on things. Guess what, friend? You're a member of the media now as well. When these Cowboys cross the line from player to entertainer/commentator, they become part of the same establishment. So by criticizing the media, Bennett is now criticizing himself.

According to Martellus, we just blew all this cursing rap stuff out of proportion, right? Even though he wore the star during the offensive rap video? To me, that's the same thing as an office worker recording the same video while still at work. You wear the star...you represent the star. The video would still have been as offensive if Bennett was not displaying the Cowboy logo, but still...it's amazing how much little thought went into the planning of this.

I have spoken to Martellus in the locker room before. He is a good guy, laidback, and seems very genuine. But again, he's making bad decisions. And can you blame him? Look at what kind of role models he has to look up to at Valley Ranch.

Like the pop psychologists say, you imitate what you see.

Bennett is simply imitating what he sees, and the results are predictable.
