Cowboys' receivers complaints divisive

10:32 PM Thu, Dec 11, 2008 |

Dallas Cowboys receivers are complaining again.

They had meetings with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to say that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo throws the ball to his buddy Jason Witten too much.

Here's a thought: Shut up!

Romo does throw the ball to Witten, maybe because he's the best receiver they got.

Witten has a team high 64 catches, nine more than Terrell Owens.

And to point the finger at Romo, to say that he doesn't throw to the open man, to say that he throws only to his buddy is incredibly divisive.

Unless you're Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, of course.

You know, before you "report" this drivel, you should get the facts. The meeting with Garrett was for trying to figure out how to better the team, how to better win games, not complaining about Romo or Witten. You are the one that is divisive, not the receivers. ALL OF THE DMN REPORTERS seem to have this penchant for misinformation, deceptive reports, antagonistic news conferences with players and coaches. It seems to me that you are trying to tear apart their cohesiveness as a team. It makes one wonder why you are doing this. Is someone paying you to tear the team apart? Do you for some reason have a personal vendetta? Why don't you try reporting what actually happens instead of this inaccurate, disruptive drivel?

Robert,
How do YOU know so well what happened?
Unless you're one of those players or coaches you have no clue. T.O. is a nut case.

well it had to happen sooner or later. anyone watching the pitt game saw owens in the face of a cowboy coach ranting and raving. It also was obvious on passes to owens that he was loafing on some plays and was not making a 100% effort running routes. It's also his M.O. to do crap like this when he doesn't get his way. Now if romo had thrown to him 90% of the time and they had lost everything would have been fine.

Hey Ron,

I do know, and Robert is correct. I am friends with Sam Hurd. He really can't believe that the media is making a story out of this. The receivers did have a meeting, much like they have in the past. It isn't only the DMN that has it out for the Cowboys, but Belo in general that stirs up this stuff. It has been going on all year. Every week there is a drama created by Belo that keeps things stirred up. They wouldn't have anything to report if they didn't make things up. I'm more concerned with the injury front than any of this b.s.

FYI Joe -- WFAA and The Dallas Morning News are now owned by separate companies. Belo was split almost a year ago. WFAA is owned by Belo and The Dallas Morning News by A.H. Belo, both companies have different executives, board of directors, management, news gathering, etc.

John said:

Get rid of T.O. We have Roy Williams now, who is a much better receiver at this point.

Aaron said:

I've heard many sides of this story and I think the biggest one is getting over-looked: Why isn't anyone saying anything about this "Unnamed Player" who is talking to the media about this? If you really have something to say like this, be a man and step up and say it. Don't hide behind a reporter to speak what you feel. I think this is what really tears a team apart. Get rid of this person, whoever it is.

Aaron Chimbel Author Profile Page said:

That's a great point. It's all just an internal thing if no one opens their mouth.

Dale does put an interesting spin on things, but, every station reported the issue, not just WFAA. They just report the news and this did happen. Dale called it right a couple of weeks ago. He said to quit blaming the owner. Quit blaming the coach. Look directly for the most inept contributor to the success of the Cowboys, the General Manager. Look at his record; it is worse than any GM in the NFL. He assembled the team and coaches. Of course, Dale was being "tongue-in-cheek" but I think he got it right. Our "GM" hasn't assembled the "Dream Team" as he stated he would. The Owner has assembled the richest team in the NFL; he has done a great job for himself there. But, the "GM" is a failure and should be replaced.

Michael Johnson said:

Okay, so if it is a made up story and the meeting was just about making the team better, then we have nothing to worry about. All you people saying the media is what's tearing the Cowboys apart are nuts. Thats the medias job, SENSATIONALISM. It's what sells copies of the newspaper. If it isn't true then the guys in the locker room know that and they ignore it and there's no issue. My thought is tho, is when theres THIS many people sayin it, it usually winds up bein at least a little bit true. It wasn't just one player who said this, it was several. Ed Werder covers the Cowboys for ESPN, and he said there were several sources close to the Cowboys who said this. Lets face it, TO has done this before, on more than one occasion. Jason Witten is the best thing that offense has going. If TO wasn't on the team he would be the #1 go to guy. Jerry Jones is what IS tearing the Cowboys apart. Signing guys like Pac Man and TO.

It's called yellow journalism. Ever hear of William Randolph Hearst? It sells newspapers, improves TV ratings and helps reporters, staff, writers keep their jobs. This is what the majority of the fans want, controversy, drama and scandal. Dale has been at the job a long time and he is still on top while the competitors are long gone and forgotten. He knows how to generate interest.

kelly q. said:

I'm not sure where I am or how I landed here, but if these stories are overblown, the only way to prove this would be to explain what TO's meltdown on the sidelines was about. Then I'll believe you.

See? I should have been an investigative reporter. Pony up the evidence :)

Also, to Aaron: WFAA and the DMN are not as broken up as you imply. For example, I've noticed many of the stories on the wfaa website carry DMN bylines. I pay attention to these things because I haven't quite figured out which set of writers is the most incoherent.

Aaron Chimbel Author Profile Page said:

Hi Kelly,
The two companies operate separately. We have a content-sharing agreement for the websites. However, that agreement does not include Cowboys stories, which is why you don't see Dallas Morning News Dallas Cowboys stories here.
Also, we'd love to tell you about Owens' sideline doings, but he only answers the questions he wants to. In the locker room you'll often hear him say "next question" to a reporter or question he doesn't like.
Thank you for you comments.

The Cowboys GM sucks. he's not a football guy and never will be. He's a salesman and knows nothing about judging talent when it comes to football. he knows how to make money. so go make some money and hire a football guy to be the GM. now as far as romo and t.o. they don't matter because the cowboys aren't going to win a superbowl with either of them. romo is the second coming of danny white, although he hasn't gotten us to the nfc championship and t.o. is just an idiot. who brought them here the GM that sucks. America's Team to America's Rehab. tank, pac-man, t.o. etc.........

Maverick said:

Hey Robert, why don't YOU get your facts straight. He's not DMN, he's WFAA, Channel 8, and THE SPORTS DIRECTION idiot!

As Dale being "divisive", the Cowboys are doing quite a good job on that issue. He's reporting the facts, and from what I see, you don't even know what website you're on.

First, know where you are, and then make comments. Secondly, get to know people before make statements which are untrue, and thirdly, if we had a coach with some "cajones", maybe, just maybe, we'd be 13 and 0 by now!

JUSTIN said:

TO says, "Give me the ball." and then drops easy passes. The rule is: If it hits your hands you should catch it. Crayton- big mouth, dropped balls. Roy Williams should just be thanking Jerry for the rescue in Detroit. When Witten makes a touchdown it is with little fanfare and he quiely returns to the sideline. The same is true when he converts a third and long, no celebration or first down gestures, he simply returns to the huddle. Dale is right about our true #1 WR being Witten.

Aric said:

Maybe TO should start finishing his routes instead of talking about this stuff. Sure, Romo throws to J.W...why not? He catches the ball when it is thrown to him. That is why he has more catches with less balls thrown to him over the last two years. In the Pitt game, JW and Romo were off, that is why that route was blown. But TO failed to finish his route on Romo's first interception and cost them a turnover. Grow up and play football.

Chuck McClenny said:

What is the point of having practices if it is not to improve the product? Is it possible that some changes need to be made in the pass routes? Could we throw out some plays that don't seem to have a high perentage of success? These are players that want to get the the playoffs. I don't know that Roy Williams has ever been there. If the outcome of this meeting is an improvement in scoring, who cares what Dale thinks. He wants to identify TO as the problem. Could TO be right in saying that last year, when he was catching more passes, our record was 13-3? I think most defenses double team the # 1 receiver, but that hasn't hurt the production of Santa Moss, Randy Moss, or any other primary wide receiver. Is making our offense just a little more diverse so bad? I don't think Romo is showing favorites, but, with 5 losses, I think there is room for improvement here/there.

JP said:

Who cares? If the Cowboys win or if they lose I still have to get my happy butt up and go to work in the morning.

Chuck McClenny said:

The day I see the Dallas News and WFAA.com stop posting the identical story by the same writer, I will believe they are seperate companies. If they are, doing so is plagerism and they should sue each other.

Also, because there is an agreement, there is no plagiarism.

Several separately owned newspapers and television stations share content for the web. You can visit mysanantonio.com, where the Belo TV station has a similar agreement with The San Antonio Express-News, which is not owned by Belo or A.H. Belo.

Witten deserves the ball as much as he can get it. Do you see him drop passes, rarely. When he gets the ball does he step out of bounds to avoid a hit, never. If Romo threw a bad pass would Witten try to keep it from get INT? You betcha. Does Witten block, run his routes hard, act like a team player? Yup. Now can you say any of that anout T.O.?

This guy plays with a broken rib, jaw, no helmet, and who know what else for the good of the team. If we had 10 other guys like him the media wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Randy said:

Since the mid-90s, I have had a hard time maintaining my support for the Cowboys. Jerry has demonstrated time and time again that he was willing and eager to sign players with bad reputations as chemistry killers. I hated the TO signing from the beginning, as did many other fans. Pacman was the worst of all, and that is saying something. When you bring such cancers into the locker room, you'd better see results (namely, championships), or they will cause the team to implode. This is rapidly gaining momentum in the past couple of seasons, and will likely continue until there is a change in philosophy (A change at GM would be a GREAT start.). Defend these guys all you want--they contribute more to the underachievement of the team than to its successes.

Ed Werder broke the story, and he does not work for Belo he works for ESPN. I love it! Conspiracy theories...Belo is destroying the Cowboys WAH WAH WAH! That is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. Jerry Jones has lead to the downfall of the Cowboys over the years. What once was a team with class, that people were proud to cheer for and support is now the laughing stock of the NFL. Why? Because of JJ bringing players to the team like Terrell Owens, and for not having enough confidence to hire a coach like Jimmy Johnson that might be able to think for himself. Jerry has an ego as big as the earth. In business, which that is what the NFL is today, you are only as good as the people that surround you...Enough said!!! LOSE OUT BABY...AND LOSE AGAIN NEXT SEASON...THEN THE NEXT...Until Jerry is out of the picture.

You cowboys fan make me sick. You believe anything and everything the media puts out there. Especially, Dale Hansen. He has a personal vendetta against the cowboys because he was fired by Jerry Jones from the Cowboys broadcast.
It always works like this: The media fabricates or simply blows stories out of proportion to generate traffic and consequently advertising dollars to their media outlets. I just laugh of all the comments above on how most of you just get drawn into this circus. Pathetic!
