With all apologies to Marion Barber (whose toughness I don't question), the Cowboys must come out Sunday night and show just how tough they really are. There's no question that they can play good football against good teams. They proved that last week in Pittsburgh. The real question is, can the Cowboys bounce back from a terrible outcome that went against them, and be mentally tough enough to rebound quickly? It's been well chronicled how much talent there is on this roster. No one in the NFL would dispute that. But the Cowboys have shown a fragile psyche over the past few years, particularly when the going gets tough. The New York Giants weren't the most talented team in the league last year, but they proved to be mentally tough down the stretch. That road winning streak confirmed it, followed by their amazing run in the playoffs. Those players willed themselves to victory and backed it up on the field. This year, they've shown they're no fluke. But the Cowboys haven't shown much besides inconsistency. Mere flashes of brilliance don't cut it in the longterm, in the NFL. Show me results now. The great thing about the NFL, is that it's all going to be right there in front of us these next three weeks. By the end of December, we will know exactly where this Cowboys team stands and what kind of heart they have. These next three games are tough, but not impossible. Daunting, but not invincible. |
