Some not so shocking news out of Valley Ranch: Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Bruce Read has been fired. The special teams were a constant source of misery for the Cowboys this season. Big returns amid coverage breakdowns were a nearly every-game issue going back to the preseason. Head coach Wade Phillips hired Read prior to the 2007 season. Read spent the previous three seasons at Oregon State and had prior NFL experience with the New York Giants (2002-2003) and the San Diego Chargers (1999-2001). Monday, Phillips said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart will return for the 2009 season, although Garrett is interviewing for the Detroit Lions head coaching job. Also today, the Cowboys signed wide receiver Travis Wilson from the practice squad, which he joined Oct. 1. Wilson was a third round draft pick (78th overall) in 2006 by the Cleveland Browns out of Oklahoma. He played in four games with one start in his two years with the Browns, recording two catches for 32 yards. Wilson was released by Cleveland on the final roster reduction this season and signed to the Denver Broncos practice squad on Sept. 3, but was released by the Broncos 20 days later. Wilson, a Carrollton native, played his high school ball at Creekview. 19 CommentsLeave a comment |

They better get brooms out and start cleaning house!!! They need to get rid of more coaches and players!!
I bet Coach Joe Avezzano could fix the special teams, and hopefully light a fire under someones a$$ as well.
I hope so too. I like Joe. He's a great guy and one heck of a special teams coach.
This is a prime example of shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.
It's probably a good move...but that iceberg is still ahead.
Wow, I'm poetic today.
So... when will they send Wade and Garrett packing?
Jerry and his "yes" men aren't working. I won't waste another dollar on that gang of goofs in 09 unless they make a serious change.

Okay, I'm not one of those guys that can tell you stats and all that. Here is my take. You can't have a successful team when the coach and assistants are constantly "coached" by the GM/Owner. The full blame lies with Jerry Jones. Remember Jimmy Johnson? Know why he left? Butting heads with the owner and your out!
The full blame lies with the Owner/GM. Jones has to much of a hand in the coaching of the team. Remember Jimmy Johnson? He coached the Cowboy's to three (3) Bowl victories (Switzers was a coatail victory). Then Jerry got mad. Boom! he was gone.
OK, 2008 is gone! Quit finger pointing and lets get going with the new season.
Jerry Jones is to blame. He needs to focus on hiring professional players and not convicted felons. He needs to stop trolling prisons for players and hire players that are professional on AND off the field.

As long a Jerry Jones is making any decisions about anything other than what to eat and drink in his suite during the game the Cowboys will be losers. And since Jerry is not going to change his ways, it looks like the Cowboys are in for another losing season no matter what even if they bring back Grandpa Munster for special teams coach.

I wasn't a Parcells fan but when he had enough of Coach Jerry looked where he went and in one year turned the losingest team in the NFL to a winner.
How many times does the brick have to hit Coach Jones that he is the problem. You can buy the best talent in the league, but without a coach who knows how to discipline and use these players and keep their over paid egos in check, we the fans are going to just keep getting the same excuses.
For example, Romo might be a bust...How you ask? He got the money, got the blond, and does not take his position on the team seriously as he did his first year. Look for a great back up next season, one who is hungry and can keep his heart in the game. Coach Jones will never admit he's wrong and just like the kid you knew on the block that had all the cool toys, do it his way or he would take his toys away....

I really think we don't need to take the typical knee jerk reaction and fire somebody because the season was NOT successful. It took a very long time to assemble this expensive group of talent and coaching.
But what the Cowboys need is for Jerry to institute, from his office, a new set of rules of accountability. Jerry needs to change the rules, and stop being such a nice guy.
All of the players and coaches will need to follow the new rules of "maximum effort, and accountability" from Jerry.
This will help Wade be a better coach if the policies from the BOSS are firm, and clear.
Some of the players and coaches might bellyache about it. But it will make the Cowboys a better team, and give Wade the hammer he needs. Wade is too nice a guy to do this himself. Besides, Wade is pretty talented as a defensive coach. For that matter, so is Dave Campo.
Think about it. This would be the fastest, and cheapest way to make changes if they FIRMLY come from Jerry.
Also, if Jerry does this, expect a short period of dramatics, and adjustment with the players and coaches to the new rules.

I would release T.O. from the start. he causes way to much trouble for the team. he's very selfish and is not a team player at all.
