T.O.: 'I don't like' Cowboys' offense

Controversial Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens has done it again.

In an interview with former Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders, now of the NFL Network, Owens says the offense and it's coordinator, Jason Garrett, are not getting him the ball enough.

"When I get my hand on the ball things happen. I can't throw it and catch it. I can only do one thing," Owens said "It's not that I can't play, it's the system of which I'm in."

This season Owens has 40 catches for 505 yards with six touchdowns through 10 games. He had 81 catches for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns in the 16 games last season with Garrett as the coordinator.

"We're going to have to change the whole dynamic of the offense," Owens said. "And for me to have the numbers that I have, not really being involved it is discouraging, it is frustrating."

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips was asked about Owens' comments at his Friday news conference.

"My philosophy is to get the best players the ball," Phillips said. "Terrell's been exemplary as far as being a team player and wanting to win."

Quarterback Tony Romo missed three weeks with a broken pinkie and the offense failed to move the ball consistently without him.

"I'd say us getting (Owens) the football is the main thing," Phillips said. "I think we will start hitting 250-300 yards passing, someone is going to make that yardage and I think he'll be a big part of that."

Maybe it all has something to do with the Washington Redskins. The Cowboys beat the Redskins 14-10 Sunday. Owens had five receptions for 38 yards.

After the team's Sept. 28. loss to the Redskins at Texas Stadium Owens was asked if he got the ball enough.

"I would say no. I'm a competitor, and I want the ball," Owens said.

In that game he had seven catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted on 20 of the team's 58 offensive plays.

"Everybody recognized that I wasn't really getting the ball in the first half," Owens said then. "I'm pretty sure everybody watching the game recognized it, people in the stands recognized it. I think my team recognized it."

In his interview with Sanders, Owens said his frustration has to do with his desire to win a Super Bowl.

"When I came here I came here with the idea and the notion that we had a chance to win a championship," he said. "I want to bring a sixth Super Bowl championship to the City of Dallas.

"But at the same time you can't obtain that championship if I'm not involved in the offense."

The problem is that the offense hasn't changed from last season. And the coaches have been creative in trying to get Owens the ball, using him on running plays and quick short passes. Still his production has lagged.

"I don't like it," Owens said. "I don't think it's difficult at all to get me featured."

Try beating coverage to get open and "maybe" you'll get more balls thrown your way. You've been shut down since the first game against Washington. Quit cryin' and work harder!

He gets the ball thrown to him plenty of times but he has to catch the ball for things to happen. In reference to the Washington game "In that game he had seven catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted on 20 of the team's 58 offensive plays." He only caught 7 out of 20 - that's not even a 50% average. He needs to quit whining and do his job.

QUIT WHINING T.O.! It gets old. You are NOT the only player on the team. What an arrogant remark - "...you can't obtain that championship if I'm not involved in the offense". Funny thing, the Cowboys have many chanpionships that you weren't involved in. All your remarks are about "I" and not about "us" or any reference to being a team player. GET OVER YOURSELF!

I think it is funny how TO cries about not getting the ball enough, however, when a catchable ball is thrown his way - HE DROPS IT!!!!
TO only catches the ball when he feels like it and if it will make him look good. The Cowboys need team players; not whiners like TO!

You are a selfish worthless human. You and Adam Jones are just alike. If you are that damn good go to Detroit and then we'll see. I'm not a Cowboy fan but I hate to hear OVERPAID BABIES CRY! GO TO HELL T.O.!

I agree, I don't like the offense that much either. Doesn't mean I agree entirely with the T.O. or the context. Maybe they should open the field more and get the guys further down the field for more yardage, instead of the little 5 or 6 yard passes that don't work too often.

T.O. SHUT UP AND DO YOUR JOB YOU OVERPAID $%!!@$. I cant say I really care for Phillips, nor jerry j, but Jason Garrett knows what he is doing... You spend way to much time blaming others for your short comings. With Pac now on the team, you two sound like broken records in STEREO... In other words quit blaming the coaches and Romo. 7 of 20?? whos fault is that?? heres an idea... just maybe you are to blame.

Logic said:

If everyone would quit asking the questions to get the answers that they really don't want to hear then it would not look like he was crying. It is very simple, he is a competitor and wants to be the number one athlete in his field, don't ask a question to something you already know the answer to if you do not want to hear the answer AGAIN!!!

BLAME THIS ON JERRY, HE HAD TO HAVE HIM. WHAT A JOKE...

T.O. you're right ,you should get the ball more and take your ball and go home you Dallas Cryboy.

He said he is a star among stars... right? Everyone deserves the ball in Dallas not just one player. I'll get my popcorn ready for an all star cast not just the same old show over and over. Wanna get involved??? Catch the ball more.

This is an example of a selfish person, always worrying about his stats.

People...RELAX!!!!!!!!!!!!
I DO NOT want a receiver on my team that does not want the ball all the time! That said, that receiver should do all possible to catch the ball every time it comes his way. Now, TO has missed balls we, as spectators, think he should have caught, but, It is all different in real time down there on the field. He will show us all his abilities as the Cowboys open up the game plan more as these final weeks progress and on into the playoffs. Go Cowboys.

Here is a quote from T.O.: "We're going to have to change the whole dynamic of the offense,"

That was actually in response to a joke question Deion proposed to him about leaving a note under the cordinators door. Why does WFAA and Belo HATE the Dallas Cowboys??? You made this the TOP link on the page at 1:21pm and for nothing. You have no clue that T.O. doesn't like the offense. This is bad reporting and making something out of nothing. Shame on you Wfaa and Belo.

Well all I can say this sounds like another Dale Hanson beat down. I am sure he had a hand in the way this story was edited. Anything to talk bad about somebody, thats Dales MO

Aaron,
Thanks for writing.

First, I can assure you there is no WFAA agenda against the Cowboys. When a star player is vocal criticizing the game plan, we will report on it. The thing is Owens is the only player, generally speaking, who does so. That's why you always hear about him.

If any other player did they same thing, we'd report on that.

Also, we report on the good things players do on the field and off. Take this about DeMarcus Ware: http://www.beloblog.com/wfaasports/2008/11/demarcus-ware-a.html and this about the work players did with the Salvation Army: http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/wfaa/stories/wfaa081119_ac_boysfood.1ca3cd0c2.html

Second, Deion knew exactly what he was doing in the interview. As a former star player, he was using that insight to set Owens up. He wasn't looking for a joke response, he was looking for Owens to be candid.

We welcome your comments.

I am blaming on the offensive linemen for lack of protecting the Quarterback. That's why QB has no time to find wide opening receivers before throw the ball. Hey! Offensive linemen make the bunch of $$$$$$M, no excuse!!

Deeda said:

You know, I have to agree with him. He shouldn't be complaining, but he doesn't get the ball enough. When he does, things happen and the score goes up.

Mike N. said:

NOW I KNOW WHY PHILLY GOT RID OF HIM, WHAT A WHINEY B****!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he is just another overated, over paid, pompous ass who thinks he is another so-called great sports idiot.i am so tired of the players who think no one can do without them.so suck it up and get a grip.

I am SICK of the entire media in Dallas. I agree with Aaron Z., not Chimbel. You guys are unreal. Everyone in this town wants a winner except the media. Hansen is as bad or worse. The team can only laugh off so much crap that you guys dig up before if starts to wear on them. Chimbel provides two positive stories, while I can provide 100 stories, blogs, comments by the entire Belo organization that just keeps the pot stirring. The sad thing is that every news outlet puts up the same BS. For all of you that bagged on TO, he NEVER said what the headline on the Blog reads. While I think that there are times he needs to keep to himself, this is a case of you guys putting words in his mouth. Now go find some real news.

another overated, over paid, loud mouth, pompous(ass).so suck it up and get a grip.you are not another legend to be the great whatever you think you might be.

T.O. has tried to motivate this team on that sideline and if you haven't seen that you must be blind. He's a player and he wants to win!! JASON GARRETT'S OFFENSE IS FLAT & DULL TO WATCH and the O-line doesn't give Romo enough time to find anyone past 10-12 yards more than once or twice a game. If our $3 million O-coordinator would spark up the playbook, Witten, Williams, & Owens would all have 60-100 yards every week. As long as T.O. wears that star on his helmet, I'm a fan!! 2 TD's this week for T.O. if he gets 8 or more balls thrown to him, watch!! GO BOYS!!!!

Robert said:

When the QB can put the ball in a catchable area T.O. will catch it. You may not like him, but he is right; if you don't throw to him to aren't going to score the points needed to win more games. Just look at the games. When he doesn't get the ball the 'Boys don't score many points and that puts more pressure on the defense. HE's just telling it like it is. Truth hurts sometimes.

NorthTexas029 said:

Sorry folks but I tend t agree with T.O. At the first of the season I thought T.O. was whining but as the year went on observing Jason Garrett's offense and the adjustments he makes(rather lack of adjusments), I'd have to say Jason Garrett is the problem. He absolutely sucks right now as Offensive coordinator. He's not ready to be head coach much less offensive coordinator of America's Team. Jason Garrett doesn't know how to utilize his players in a give situation nor adjust to what the defense throws at us. He sucks right now(he can get better over time but he sucks right now).

There are too many weapons on the Dallas Cowboys squad and Jason Garrett doesn't know how to use them.
