Mansfield Football makes history

The Mansfield Tigers beat Abilene last Friday night, 20-14 in the first round of the playoffs. It was just one of dozens of scores in the paper Saturday morning, but this one was special. First of all, it was a huge upset, with Mansfield beating a previously unbeaten team, one that was ranked 3rd in the state. The win gave the Tigers a 7-4 record.

But the win was much bigger than that. It was the first time in Mansfield's long history that the football team had won a playoff game. I'm waiting for a call back, hoping to learn just how long Mansfield has played football, but I went to Wikipedia and saw that the school was founded in 1908. It's hard to imagine a program going that long without a playoff win; what a special night that was for the school, and everyone associated with it now and in the past.

We went out today and talked to running back Stepfan (pronounced Stef-faan) Taylor, who had 195 yards and a couple of touchdowns against Abilene, cornerback Jordan Finch, who intercepted a pass in the last 2 minutes to seal the win, and first-year head coach Jeff Hulme (pronounced Hume). That story is schedule to run Thursday during the 6:00 newscast.
