November 2, 2008 ArchivesThere are four teams in the NFC East and your Cowboys are in 4th place now. It is still amazing to me that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would spend the money he does, make the commitment he does trying to win and not have a back up quarterback who can play just a little bit anyway. It says a great deal about the organization and a great deal about the coaches who thought that 40-year-old Brad Johnson could still play. It d... Most NFL teams, almost every NFL team that thinks about winning a title doesn't think about doing it with a back up quarterback, but it has been done. Kerry Collins is doing it in Tennessee now. Jeff Hostetler did it for the Giants years ago, even Jason Garrett and Bernie Kosar helped the cowboys in the 90's But this Cowboys team thought they could win with Tony Romo and apparently didn't think they'd need anybody else. ...Before the season the Dallas Cowboys were widely picked to play in the Super Bowl. After nine games, the Cowboys are 5-4 and in last place in the NFC East. Philadelphia's win over Seattle puts them at 5-3. The Cowboys are now three games behind the Giants (7-1). The 6-2 Washington Redskins host Pittsburgh Monday night. While the Cowboys could miss the playoffs this season, there is still some hope. They have a bye next... It was an ugly day for the Dallas Cowboys in New Jersey, losing the the New York Giants 35-14. ...Brad Johnson has played 17 NFL season and won a Super Bowl, but at 40 he may be done playing. In three starts since Tony Romo broke his pinkie, Johnson has looked anything but the consistent quarterback he has been over the course of his career. ...It's the two minute warning. The Cowboys will be out of New Jersey in just a little bit now. ...If the Cowboys were even thinking about a comeback, it ended on the 17-yard touchdown by Derrick Ward. Giants lead 35-14. ...Brooks Bollinger gets his first Cowboys touchdown, connecting with Terrell Owens. T.O. is now fourth on the all-time touchdown list with 137. Cowboys still down 28-14, but at least showing some life with Bollinger now. ...Brooks Bollinger showed some poise on a fourth down and five deep in Giants territory. He calmly stood in the pocket before connecting with Patrick Crayton with a some room to spare for the first down. ...Guard Leonard Davis must have just gotten a stinger. He's back after Montrae Holland filled in on a couple plays. ...The Dallas Cowboys have finally decided to get some time for back up running back Tashard Choice. His first run he takes 12-yards. This guy has talent. They need to get the ball to him more. Choice had an exceptional preseason and training camp. With Felix Jones out, it has been perplexing that Choice has not gotten more work behind Marion Barber. ...Montrae Holland, who the Cowboys got in a trade just before the start of the season, is in the game for Pro Bowl guard Leonard Davis, who may have hurt his ankle. ...Eli Manning hasn't been fumbling a lot lately, but he is today. DeMarcus Ware rushed and knocked the ball out. It then slowly rolled down the field until the Cowboys recovered. ...Brooks Bollinger was born in Bismarck, ND on Nov. 15, 1979. He played his college ball at Wisconsin. The 6-1, 205-pound quarterback is in his sixth NFL season. He joined the Cowboys after being cut the Minnesota Vikings after the preseason. He spent the last two seasons there. The New York Jets took Bollinger with the 200th pick (sixth round) in 2003. He started nine games for the Jets in 2005, winning t... Cowboys have turned the ball over four times. The Giants have 21 points after them. The Cowboys one last week by not turning the ball over.
I was wrong and right. Coming into the game, I didn't think the Cowboys would put Brooks Bollinger in at quarterback. The reason I didn't think they would is because he doesn't have a very good track record. On his first pass as a Cowboys quarterback Bollinger threw in interception. Tony Romo can't come back soon enough. Giants turn the turnover into another touchdown to lead 28-7. ...In a good sign Brooks Bollinger will go into the game for the Dallas Cowboys, he is putting his hands on center Andre Gurode's rear end to practice taking snaps. ...After two interceptions and just 58 passing yards so far, Brad Johnson remains the Cowboys quarterback. Brooks Bolliinger has been warming up on the sideline and it appeared he might go in the game, but the Cowboys have stuck with Johnson. Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett (or maybe Jerry Jones) could be waiting until after the half now. ...Amani Toomer extends the Giants lead to 21-7. The Cowboys defense is playing hard, but it's hard to play well when you are on the field almost the entire game. ...Just when it looks like the Cowboys might have a chance in this game, Brad Johnson finds Corey Webster for the second time. Problem is Webster plays for the Giants. After the defense looks to be able to slow the Giants and Marion Barber has a couple nice runs, Johnson throws his second interception. Maybe it's Brooks Bollinger time now. ...After the Giants moved the ball at will against the Cowboys to start the game, the defense is really starting to get pressure on Eli Manning. Keith Davis seems to be the emotional leader of the defense. Now the offense has to get something done. The Giants have had the ball three times as long as the Cowboys. ...Does neither team want to hold on to the ball? Eli Manning's latest miscue is an interception that Cowboys' rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins takes in for a touchdown. All of a sudden the Cowboys aren't dead. Not sure what this will mean for the Cowboys near decision to put in third-string quarterback Brooks Bollinger. ...Brooks Bollinger was about to go in, but because the Cowboys were deep in Giants territory the coaches decide to stick with Brad Johnson. We'll probably see Bollinger soon. Terrell Owens just fumbled after a completion from Johnson. It was his first fumble as a Cowboy and they miss a prime scoring opportunity. ...Eli Manning just dropped the ball. DeMarcus Ware found it and now the Cowboys take over in prime scoring position. The question now is who will be at quarterback. ...Not sure if backup quarterback Brooks Bollinger is just staying loose or preparing to get in the game, but he is throwing quite a bit. Maybe he's just trying to add some extra drama. ...The network television cameras love to show Terrell Owens and he is not hiding his emotions on the sideline as the Cowboys struggle early in the Meadowlands. Problem is he's not doing much on the field. Running into Patrick Crayton on a route leading to sack doesn't help. Emotion is good, but it only works if you can translate it to the field. ...The gutsy performance by the Cowboys secondary last week may have been the exception, not the rule. Eli Manning is passing at will and just hit Steve Smith to take a 14-0 lead. ...And so this is how it's going to be. After receiver Roy Williams makes a beautiful one-handed catch along the sideline, Brad Johnson throws an interception to Corey Webster. The good and the bad, if it gets ugly we may just see Brooks Bollinger after all. ...Giants' punter Jeff Feagles shanked a 27-yard punt, but an offsides penalty gave Feagles another try. So instead of starting on the Giants' 42, the Cowboys start on their own 42 after a five yard return. So the five yard penalty becomes a 16 yard one. Cowboys quarterback Brad Johnson already looks better than last week completing passes to Patrick Crayton and Terrell Owens. It's the running game that is struggling right now. ...Last week the Dallas Cowboys did not give up a touchdown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It took one drive for the New York Giants to get in the end zone on the Cowboys' defense. Eli Manning hit tight end Kevin Boss for the score. Giants lead 7-0 and the Brad Johnson led Cowboys must play from behind. ...I guess it makes perfect sense since all the major injuries have come in the Cowboys' secondary, but the Cowboys are containing the Giants' top ranked rushing attack and giving up pass plays. Zach Thomas and Bradie James have both made nice stops, but the secondary appears to be playing back some to avoid giving up big plays. In turn, they're giving up several short and intermediate pass plays. ...Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who suffered a broken rib last week, will today against the New York Giants. Cornerback Anthony Henry will also play, he was also hurt last week. The inactive player for the Cowboys are: Quarterback Tony Romo, running back Felix Jones, cornerbacks Quincy Butler and Terence Newman, guards Kyle Kosier and Joe Berger, tackle Doug Free and wide receiver and returner Isaiah Stanback. ...No one is giving the Dallas Cowboys a chance against the New York Giants today in New Jersey. Maybe being an underdog is what this Cowboys team needs. Since mini-camp, this team has had to face the expectation they would be a Super Bowl team. They've been the anointed ones until the past few weeks when they have suffered a barrage of injuries. Now they head to the Meadowlands as eight and a half point underdogs to the defend... Unlike Arizona State earlier in the year, the UNLV Rebels didn't find #12 TCU looking ahead to its big game next week. Behind a three touchdown performance by TCU quarterback Andy Dalton, the Frogs easily won in Vegas tonight, 44-14. TCU (9-1) has now set up a huge game with Utah on Thursday night. The Utes are currently ranked #10 in the BCS. "You always want to play in the big arena," TCU coach Gary Patterson told the media after ton... |
