After last night's historical comeback against Tampa, the Boston Red Sox might be looking like a team of destiny? How else to explain 8 runs in the final 3 innings to overcome a 7-0 deficit, if not fate? If I learned one thing from the 2001 World Series, it's this: there is no such thing as a "Team of Destiny," and "fate" has no place in sports. 2001 is the year the Yankees made it to the world series the month after the 9/11 tragedy. They won two home games with walk-off home runs in the 9th inning (to take a 3-2 series lead, if I remember correctly). If ever there was a team of destiny - it was that one ... the home team to a crippled city, playing for a world championship. And they ended up losing to an expansion team. If the Red Sox do end up winning the World Series, it will because they scored more runs and won more games, not because of destiny. |
