Wade Phillips not worried about Giants odds

4:37 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The New York Giants are a nine point favorite to beat the Dallas Cowboys, according to Vegas odds makers.

That isn't of interest to Cowboys coach Wade Phillips.

"I really don't pay attention to who is the underdog and who isn't," he said.

Phillips says part of the reason he doesn't pay much attention to it is because he knows any team can win any game and he wants his team knowing that can do just that.

"I just ...

Phillips: Romo not throwing yet, cast could come off

10:51 AM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said injured quarterback Tony Romo hasn't thrown the ball this week.

The coach said Romo could throw some next week.

And he said the cast could come off by Thursday or Friday.

Phillips: Witten won't practice, could still play

10:46 AM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says tight end Jason Witten will not practice today, in the team walk through, before the Cowboys head to New York to play the Giants Sunday.

Witten has a broken rib, but Phillips said he could still play this week and will travel with the team.

"He does everything right in practice and that's why he doesn't need to practice as much some times," he said.

Phillips says he doesn't ...

Make your Valentine's Day plans... for 2010

5:34 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Even if you're single now, you can still starting making plans for Valentine's Day 2010.

The Dallas Mavericks, NBA, Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban, Marv Albert and David Stern all came together to announce the 2010 NBA All-Star game is coming to Dallas... well actually Arlington... and the Cowboys new stadium.

Cuban said he didn't think the Mavs would ever host an All-Star game because the AAC isn't big enough to hold ...

Witten will be game-time decision

1:32 PM Thu, Oct 30, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys star Jason Witten wants to play Sunday against the division-leading and defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. He just doesn't know if he'll be able to.

The Pro Bowl tight end told reporters today he will be a game-time decision Sunday.

At this point he isn't sure if he'll be able to play with a broken rib he suffered in last week's win over Tampa Bay.

Rookie Martellus Bennett would start in his ...

Phillips: Giants playoff loss can be motivation

5:31 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips doesn't have fond memories of the last time his team played the New York Giants.

"I tried to forget about it last year," Phillips said.

The 21-17 win continued an improbable Super Bowl run for the Giants.

Since then, the Giants (6-1) have continued to dominate.

The Cowboys played them three times last year, winning both regular season games, but lost in the playoffs. They...

Phillips still not sure about Witten for Sunday

4:21 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says tight end Jason Witten could still play Sunday.

The may factor will be the amount of pain Witten is in. Phillips said that is what kept him from returning to Sunday's game.

"You got to make sure he doesn't get hurt worse," Phillips said. "It may be a situation he can't do it this week."

Phillips said rookie Martellus Bennett would get the majority of the snaps in Witten's p...

Brad Johnson is starting, got it?

4:13 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips doesn't seem to have a quarterback quandary on his hands.

When asked at his Wednesday news conference about how Brooks Bollinger, the team's third quarterback, he was either being very coy or pretty resolute that Brad Johnson will be starting again.

"He took a couple of snaps," Phillips said of Bollinger.

Then Phillips again said Johnson, who is 1-1 as the Cowboys starter, would ...

Witten walking fine, but doesn't practice

1:26 PM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who broke a rib in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay, didn't talk to reporters during the open media time in the Cowboys' locker room.

But he did happen to walk by in the hall outside the locker room just as reporters were leaving.

He seemed to be walking without visible pain and was walking briskly.

He even smiled and said hello to some reporters. He didn't say anything of consequence...

Do the Cowboys need a new X-ray machine?

10:41 AM Wed, Oct 29, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

The Dallas Cowboys might have tight end Jason Witten Sunday, but if they do he plays with a broken rib.

X-rays Sunday showed a bruise, but no break.

They need a new X-ray machine -- and depending on how much it hurts -- they might need a new tight end too.

Coach Joe on Witten injury

8:31 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

You've seen former Cowboys special teams coach Joe Avezzano on with Dale after the Cowboys games and you've seen his post-game analysis on-line.

Now, we've give Coach Joe a web cam, so you can here his thoughts throughout the week.

His first video blog doesn't disappoint. They key is Joe isn't just a coach he's also played in the NFL.

In his first blog he talks about the Jason Witten injury and he makes a great point a...

Cowboys bring Quincy Butler back

5:43 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Several reports from Valley Ranch say the Cowboys are bringing back cornerback Quincy Butler.

Butler, a TCU product, was on New Orleans' practice squad.

He was with the Cowboys the last two seasons and was in training camp with the Boys this year.

The Cowboys have a roster spot after cutting safety Daren Stone today.

The Cowboys are thin at corner with injuries to Terence Newman and Anthony Henry and with the ...

Chargers need Wade Phillips back

3:17 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

We have a solution to please both San Diego Chargers fans and Dallas Cowboys fans: Send Wade Phillips back to San Diego.

Phillips (and his "Phillips 3-4" defense) was in America's Finest City from 2004-06 before being hired by Jerry Jones to coach the Cowboys.

Today, Phillips' replacement as defensive coordinator in San Diego, Ted Cottrell, was fired by Norv Turner (a finalist for the Cowboys job) and replaced with Ron Rivera (...

Cowboys release Jefferson, Stone

2:58 PM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys have released wide receiver Mike Jefferson and safety Daren Stone.

Jefferson, originally on the Cowboys practice squad was placed on the club's reserve/suspended list for four weeks.

Stone signed with Dallas on Oct. 21 and was inactive for the Tampa Bay game.

Jefferson was suspended last month for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The release of Stone will leave the Cowboys with an...

Witten has broken rib; hopes to play

11:08 AM Tue, Oct 28, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It turns out Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten broke a rib Sunday, but he wants to play this week against the New York Giants.

Initially, the team said Witten suffered a bruised rib in the first half against Tampa Bay Sunday.

On Monday, head coach Wade Phillips said he did not have details on WItten's injury.

He did say both Witten and cornerback Anthony Henry, who hurt his quadriceps Sunday, could play against the...

Cowboys don't need Witten, since Johnson can't throw the ball

5:42 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

Cowboys get a win, but lose two more players.

They don't know yet if tight end Jason Witten or cornerback Anthony Henry can play in the Giants game Sunday

They probably don't need Witten; they don't have a quarterback who can throw him the ball anyway.

Brad Johnson was 19 of 33 against Tampa Bay Sunday for 122 yards. 122. He missed several open receivers, was sacked three times and even on the good plays

He did ...

Quarterback Change For Cowboys Seems Unlikely

4:58 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
George Riba

If you turned on ESPN during the day, you may have noticed they keep teasing a possible change at Quarterback for the Cowboys this Sunday.

I'm sure there are sources who say, things might change, but let's get real. Brad Johnson isn't having much success filling in for Tony Romo, but do you really want to face the defending Super Bowl Champions with Brooks Bollinger, a guy who was 6-of-18 for 62-yards in a preseason game against the C...

Brooks Bollinger not the answer for Cowboys

3:45 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's always the case that the quarterback who isn't playing is better than they guy who is.

And Brooks Bollinger may be better than Brad Johnson, but you sure couldn't tell when Bollinger played as a member of the Minnesota Vikings against the Cowboys in the preseason finale.

Those exhibition games are usually when a quarterback can show that he is better than the third or fourth teamers he's playing with and against.

S...

Wade Phillips puts game ball in laundry basket

1:42 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

After the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave coach Wade Phillips the game ball.

Phillips then proceeded to put it in a laundry basket in the locker room at Texas Stadium.

He said he appreciated the gesture, but that the win was more about the players.

"It really wasn't me," he said

Asked if he did anything different leading up to the game, he said wanted to make sure the team had ...

Phillips doesn't want Cowboys looking ahead

1:34 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys will get Tony Romo and likely Felix Jones, Anthony Spencer and Terence Newman, but coach Wade Phillips doesn't want his team looking past the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

"It's a really big game for us," he said. "We feel like that could be a key game as far as the division is concerned."

"It doesn't really matter who is coming in after the bye," Phillips said.

...

Phillips: Brad Johnson will start in NY

1:18 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says his quarterback Sunday will be Brad Johnson.

"Brad won the game at quarterback and that's the most important thing," he said.

The 40-year-old QB is coming off a bad game and a mediocre game, which led to questions by reporters if Phillips would go with third-QB Brooks Bollinger.

Phillips stopped short of giving a full endorsement of Johnson starting Sunday in New York, at first, before ...

Coach happy with Cowboys' rookie Scandrick

1:13 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Fifth-round draft picks don't usually make an impact, but injuries and a suspension have put rookie Orland Scandrick into a key player for the Cowboys secondary.

"Orlando played very well," Phillips said. "He has a great understanding of the game."

Phillips says Scandrick was telling other players which adjustments to make during the win over Tampa.

"He played even better than a rookie," he said.

...

Phillips: Team came ready to play

1:09 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he team came out against the Bucs with increased fervor.

"I just think they may up their mind they wouldn't be denied this ball game," Phillips said.

He says his team practiced with great intensity during the week.

"Overall it's a nice win for us," he said. "I can't get over the heart of this team."

Cowboys injury update

1:05 PM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says it's possible TE Jason Witten and CB Anthony Henry could play this week.

He said he is not sure the extent of the injuries.

Rookie corner Orlando Scandrick would start for Henry.

After yesterday's win over the Tampa Bay Bucs, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips gave his players Monday off.

Defense shows up at right time for Cowboys

10:32 AM Mon, Oct 27, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

The Cowboys played like they had a simple game plan against Tampa Bay: Don't screw up.

And nobody did.

Brad Johnson makes his second start at quarterback -- he won a Super Bowl when he played in Tampa -- but that was a long time ago.

The Cowboys get 172 yards on offense. The Bucs get 90 more, that's 262 if you're a DISD administrator.

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware doesn't get a sack for the first time in 10 games, Br...

Wade Phillips gets game ball

4:01 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys players knew this was not just an important game for them, but also for head coach Wade Phillips.

After the win, the coach got the game ball.

It's a nice gesture for a coach they players, linebacker Zach Thomas said, genuinely like.

Brad Johnson: 'Our back was against the wall'

3:43 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Brad Johnson didn't have a great game in his second start at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, but it was enough to win.

"We knew what kind of game we were going to get into," he said. "We knew our back was against the wall."

He was 19 of 33 passing for 122 yards and one touchdown, but it was enough behind a strong performance from the Cowboys defense.

Johnson will likely start one more game before Tony Romo returns ...

T.O.: 'Defense showed up'

3:29 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens knows sometimes you're not going to win big sometimes with a backup quarterback and sometimes that may mean the offense won't play well.

"As a receiver you're competitive," Owens said. "We have to do whatever is necessary to win the game."

Against the Bucs that meant a lot of check down passes and not turning the ball over.

It also meant the defense had to play tight. They didn't giv...

Phillips: Players stepped up

3:21 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips was happy and probably relieved with the team's 13-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Obviously this is a big win for us," he said.

The Cowboys did it suffering two more key injuries. Tight end Jason Witten and cornerback Anthony Henry were both hurt and did not play for much of the game.

"Certainly our young defensive players stepped up," he said.

That's especially t...

Cowboys win, 13-9

Strong defense to end it saves the win for the Cowboys. They're now 5-3 on the season.

Cowboys defense not breaking

2:10 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys defense is playing decent.

They have not given up a touchdown through almost three quarters today.

The did just give up their third field goal of the day, but still lead 13-9.

My question for Tampa Bay is why are they not attacking the Cowboys secondary more?

The Cowboy only have one projected starter for this season playing, safety Ken Hamlin.

With an injury to Anthony Henry, the Cow...

Anyone want to play corner?

2:03 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

If the Cowboys haven't had enough problems at cornerback with the injury to Terence Newman and suspension of Adam "Pacman" Jones, now Anthony Henry is hurt.

He has a left quad contusion and his return is questionable.

That means the Cowboys' corners are Mike Jennkins, Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball.

Cowboys add another field goal

1:59 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Nick Folk is good from 45 to extend the Cowboys lead to 13-6.

Offense still not very explosive.

Defense is stepping up!

1:59 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

On Friday, former Cowboys linebacker Eugene "The Hitting Machine" Lockhart appeared on Tylock Lasik SportsTalk.

He said the Cowboys have been "lacking any enthusiasm on defense". I don't know if they were watching in their team meetings, but the defense has looked pretty pumped all game.

The Cowboys have three sacks and every time the defense has had some attitude after the hit. They look a lot more focused and in this game. <...

Witten injury update

1:49 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Jason Witten has a rib contusion. He went to the locker room for X-rays during the second quarter, but they were negative.

His return is questionable.

Martellus Bennett has been solid in his place. He has two catches for 15 yards.

Nice call on fourth and one

1:43 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

I like Jason Garrett's call on fourth and one.

He lined up in the I-formation with Marion Barber in the full back position and did a sweep move with Tashard Choice as the deep back and an inside hand off to Barber for the first down.

Nice Tom Foolery.

Stats don't look pretty

1:34 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The halftime stats are exactly pretty for the Dallas Cowboys, just 101 yards of total offense.

But if you lead and then win it's all that matters.

Jump ball TD

1:24 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

And that is why the Cowboys wanted WR Roy Williams.

A two yard touchdown pass from Brad Johnson to Williams gives the Cowboys the halftime lead 10-6.

The Bucs helped the Cowboys with four first downs by penalties on the final drive of the first half.

The Cowboys took 10 plays to go 59 yards in 2:22 to take the lead.

Johnson looked shaky at times, but he did get the touchdown and the lead.

It may not b...

Does Romo have a future in coaching?

1:22 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Romo has been in the ear of Head Coach Wade Phillips, Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett, Wide Receiver Coach Ray Sherman, and Secondary Coach Dave Campo all day.

If you thought he was just going to kick back and sit up in the luxury suite with Jerry and Jessica you were nuts. I have not seen him at the back of the bench yet today. I hope Fox caught it late in the second half. Romo was running up the sideline on a pass from Johnson t...

Penalties killing Bucs

1:19 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Buccaneers are killing themselves with three penalties for first downs this drive.

The other thing each penalty does is stop the clock.

It may not matter much because Brad Johnson is having a hard time connecting with Terrell Owens in the end zone.

Not sure how much longer they can with him like this.

Add another one on the personal foul by Cato June.

The menacing look on Bucs coach Jon Gurden's fa...

A horsecollar tackle helps Cowboys

1:15 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The horsecollar tackle Cowboys safety Roy Williams made famous has come to help the Cowboys on third and 12 the Cowboys threw a screen pass to Marion Barber, he didn't gain any yards, but Ronde Barber tackled him by grabbing the upper part of his shoulder pads in the back and that's a penalty.

Barber doing his thing!

1:10 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

On my drive in to Texas Stadium, I was listening to 103.3 ESPN radio and heard Tony Casillas say that Marion Barber needed to get back to playing his game.

Last week Barber was criticized for trying to avoid contact and bounce runs to the outside like injured running back Felix Jones.

Today Barber is going up the middle strong and often. With 33 seconds before halftime he has 12 carries for 50-yards.

To bad he doesn't h...

There's a batted pass

12:58 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In my what to watch preview of this game I said the Cowboys need to get up against a short quarterback with a quick release.

Meaning, instead of just rushing the passer, when he throws they need to get vertical, jump and use their arms to bat passes down.

Jay Ratliff just did that... of course they gave up a 20-yard pass on the next play for a first down.

...

Efficient drive lead to field goal

12:52 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys had an efficient drive leading to a Nick Folk field goal.

The Cowboys took 14 plays covering 51 yards over 6:40 to get 38-yard field goal.

While effective in getting a score, quarterback Brad Johnson missed an open Tony Curtis on what could have been a touchdown.

Johnson is still either showing rust or his age (40)

The question in the press box, "Would Bollinger be better than Johnson?"

12:50 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

It is a strong question if you ask me. At the 9:29 point in the second quarter, Johnson is 5/12 for 32 yards. More importantly he has missed wide-open receivers and has had at least three balls that could have been picked off.

Bollinger is no Tony Romo, but in his career he has thrown for:

201/343-completions to attempts
2155 yards
8 touchdowns
8 interceptions

The biggest concern about Johnson in th...

Witten has rib injury

12:48 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten has been taken to the locker room.

He suffered a rib injury. His status is uncertain.

(On a personal note, I really hope he comes back, he's the tight end on my fantasy team.)

Witten hurt and heading to the locker room

12:46 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

Cowboy's tight end Jason Witten was just taken to the locker room at the 13:01 point in the second quarter. It's not know in the press box what happened to Witten

Martellus Bennett isn't wasting anytime stepping in. On the Cowboys second play with Witten in the locker room, Bennett caught a 10-yard pass for a first down.

Welcome WR Roy Williams

12:43 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

Some smack is starting to fly!

12:36 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

A match-up to watch the rest of the day is Tampa Bay Bucs Derrick Brooks against the Cowboys O-line. Brooks and Marc Colombo had some extra shoving and choice words during the last play of the 1st quarter. I was pretty sure that both of them were going to get off setting penalties.

Brooks than decided to jaw with T.O. after the play and between the 1st and 2nd quarter break.

Could be fun to watch.

Bucs like former Cowboys receivers

12:34 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Cowboys wide receiver Joey Galloway nearly made a spectacular catch for the Buccaneers, but it was ruled incomplete.

He isn't the only ex-Cowboys receiver on the Bucs. Antonio Bryant (they guy who the jersey at Bill Parcells) is also on the Bucs receiving corps.

Bryant was a second-round draft choice by the Cowboys in 2002.

A couple years earlier, the Cowboys traded two first-round draft picks to Seattle for Gal...

Hello Flo and welcome the Pounder

12:27 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Flozell Adams turned a makable third and seven into a third and 12 by jumping out of his stance and getting a five yard false start penalty.

Adams gets a lot of false start penalties on team that gets a lot of penalties.

At least the new favorite player for Cowboys fans, punter Sam (The Pounder?) Paulescu, is getting a lot of work.

Oh wait, you don't want your punter to get a lot of work. He is averaging 48 yards a pu...

At least the punter can tackle

12:08 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

When your season is going the way it is now for the Dallas Cowboys sometimes the little things are big.

Take the tackle by punter Sam Paulescu on Tampa Bay return man Clifton Smith.

Of course it came on a 20-yard return, but the Cowboys replacement punter drilled Smith in a perfect form tackle.

The Bucs then settle for a field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Boos starting already

12:05 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |

After the Cowboys went three and out to start the game with two incompletions and gaining only one yard a Marion Barber run, fans started booing.

It may be that kind of day here at Texas Stadium.

Cowboys win toss, to receive

12:01 PM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

In a change from what the Dallas Cowboys have been electing to do when they win the toss this season, they will receive.

The NFL has a new rule, that mirrors college, where you can defer to the second half and get the ball to start the third quarter, but Wade Phillips probably wants to get some temp early.

So Miles Austin returns the ball toe the 23 yard line.

This is downright scary!

11:47 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

I would say only about half of Texas Stadium is full. I don't know if the early start is throwing attendance, but the Cowboys have 12 minutes to get some fans in here.

A side note: Tampa Bay running back Warrick Dunn and wide receiver Joey Galloway will both be available for the Bucs.

Big time media folks in press box

Maybe everyone thinks this is an important game.

There are some big-time media folks in the press box for this game.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King is talking to ESPN's Matt Mosley right now. Ed Werder, also of ESPN fame is at the same table.

Also at the table talking to Tim Cowlishaw of The Dallas Morning News and ESPN is former Cowboys player and current player development guru Calvin Hill.

Receiver Roy Williams gets some coaching

11:22 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

During pre-game warm ups, new Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams was getting some one-on-one coaching from receivers coach Ray Sherman.

Williams has only been a Dallas Cowboy for a week and a half and this is the Texas-native's first game in Texas Stadium as a Cowboy.

The other Roy Williams, the safety, is out for the rest of the season, so there is again only one Roy Williams playing for the Cowboys.

Mood hard to gauge

11:08 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's hard to get an exact feel for the Cowboys right now. They are taking the field for warm ups, but it appears they are not overly intense at this point.

Wade Phillips, for example, calmly walked on the field. You certainly want to be cool and collected, but you also need to show you give a darn.

It's hard to tell if this is business as usual or a critical game.

What to watch: Cowboys-Bucs

9:39 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

This is as close to a must win game as you can have at this point in the season. At 4-3 with road games upcoming against division foes New York and Washington, today's home game for the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is crucial.

Here is what to watch for in the game:

1. Brad Johnson. The Cowboys backup is getting his second start. He needs to be sharp against a solid Tampa-2 defense. He won the Super Bowl leading ...

Frogs Avoid Letdown Against Wyoming, 54-7

12:51 AM Sun, Oct 26, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

In a game that some were calling the "SMU of 2005", TCU used a school record 226 receiving yards from Jimmy Young, to blow out the Wyoming Cowboys 54-7 on Saturday night.

After skyrocketing up the polls and appearing in the first BCS standings of the year, (8-1, 5-0 MWC) TCU was trying to avoid a major let down against (2-6, 0-5 MWC) Wyoming. From the very start, the superior frogs outmatched the Cowboys.

TCU jumped out to a 14...

Phillips: Cowboys will 'play their best'

11:05 AM Fri, Oct 24, 2008 |

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips feels good about his team heading into Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I think it's just the vibe from the players," Phillips said. "It's just a lot a of things that I look at."

Since the team was 13-3 last season, Phillips says they didn't have to face a lot of adversity. After seven games this season the Cowboys (4-3) have already lost three games, all coming in their last four ga...

Bum Phillips gives unsolicited advice to Wade

10:51 AM Fri, Oct 24, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips learned how to coach from his dad, former Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints head coach Bum Phillips.

The younger Phillips was an assistant under his dad in both places and replaced his dad as interim head coach in New Orleans.

Wade Phillips says he doesn't ask his dad for advice, mostly because he doesn't have to.

"I don't have to go to him, he gives me advice," Phillips said....

Phillips: Penalties aren't a problem

10:35 AM Fri, Oct 24, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says penalties have not been big difference in winning and losing for the Cowboys this season because of the penalty differential, meaning there isn't a big difference it the number of penalties between the Cowboys and their opponents.

He says the key to cutting down on penalties can lie with peer pressure from the players.

"Guys being accountable to other guys," Phillips said. "I think ...

Wade Phillips' chair on fire

6:11 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The national football watchers say of all the coaches in the NFL none is on a hotter seat than Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips. Everyone seems to think he will be the next coach fired, in a year when three coaches have already been fired.

Cowboys owner/gm Jerry Jones has already said he isn't firing Phillips. Usually when an owner says that it means the coach is about to be fired. Jones has fired every coach in Cowboys history, but no...

Mike Leach does it again...

5:37 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |
Nick Zelinski

For those of you that follow Texas Tech football, the quirkiness of Mike Leach never gets old. Well, he's at it again. From doing the weather forecast to giving dating advice, Leach is very unpredictable. This week throws a new wrinkle into the Texas Tech special teams, which has, needless to say, "strug...

Wade Phillips sees CB, QB improving

3:45 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips knows this week matters, it's the difference between being 4-4 and 5-3.

"This is a big game for us," he said.

A win would come with Keith Davis starting at strong safety in place of Roy Williams, who is out for the year.

Linebacker Kevin Burnett will also play.

The coach contends there is good news, at least relatively speaking.

Phillips says rookie Mike Jenkins is showing im...

Cowboys' defensive calls may not change

12:32 PM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Despite several media reports that Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is taking over calling defensive plays from coordinator Brian Stewart, it may not exactly be happening.

Safety Ken Hamlin says "that's not happening, nothing is changing."

Stewart himself downplayed the talk and Phillips has yet to outright say who calls the plays will change.

Most of it may be a moot point anyways, since this is, as he pointe...

Tampa game nearly must-win for Cowboys

4:12 PM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys (4-3) face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2) Sunday at Texas Stadium and as the records would indicate, it's a swing game, especially for the Cowboys.

The difference between 4-4 and 5-3 is huge, especially with all the injuries the Cowboys have endured.

"We're looking forward to this game, it's a big game for us," coach Wade Phillips said.

To stay above .500, the Cowboys will have to win without Tony Ro...

Wade Phillips to take more control of Cowboys D

3:54 PM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he will be more involved in the defense, but wouldn't confirm reports that he will be calling the plays and not defensive coordinator Brian Stewart.

"I don't want to get into who does what," Phillips said. "There's things we need to do differently."

"I think I can do more, I can help more than I have."

"I can be more proactive."

"Brian will do whatever we want."

Cowboys injury update

3:46 PM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips updated the team's injuries at his afternoon news conference.

Safety Roy Williams was placed on injured reserve. To take his spot, the team signed safety Darren Stone, who played for Atlanta last season.

Did not practice Wednesday: G Kyle Kosier, RB Felix Jones, CB Terence Newman, QB Tony Romo, LB Anthony Spencer

Greg Ellis has a right calf strain, but practiced fully.

Jerry Jones among sports figures supporting McCain

It's often said politics is a contact sport.

Well several people who make their living in real contact sports and other well known sports figures are very publicly supporting the two main presidential candidates.

In a blog by a Dayton Daily News writer he gets into that and then delves much deeper.

Romo out again, Cowboys out too

10:29 PM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was on a radio show with Terrell Owens tonight and after not playing in St. Louis Sunday he says unless something drastically changes in the next day or two he won't play this Sunday either.

Here's something drastic: The Cowboys lose again without Romo.

But apparently that broken finger is gonna keep him out at least another week.

Rays battle-tested heading into World Series

3:31 PM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I had this thought while watching Tampa pull out Game 7 against Boston Sunday night: the Rays are much more prepared to win the World Series now, after going through that Game 7, than had they finished off Boston in 5 games. Take pitcher David Price for example; he's the former Vanderbilt pitcher who didn't throw a big-league pitch until last month. He got the last four outs in that Game 7, against an experience playoff team that had already o...

Phillips needs to change his approach

1:56 PM Tue, Oct 21, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Maybe it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Dallas Cowboys are struggling.

Head coach Wade Phillips has been criticized outside the organization for his soft approach since his hiring more than a year and a half ago.

In recent weeks it hasn't just been media and fans criticizing.

We've heard it, albeit somewhat guarded, from players in the locker room, too.

When they say things like what linebacker Bradie ...

Cowboys blame should go to GM Jerry

11:19 PM Mon, Oct 20, 2008 |
Dale Hansen

Cowboys lose another game -- they're 4 and 3 now -- and if I understand my e-mails and the talk radio shows correctly -- and i think I do -- the world ends Thursday.

Stock market crashing, teacher layoffs, the hurricane, homeless, but the Cowboys lose a football game so there's really nothing to live for now.

For the three of us who think there might be though, somebody at Valley Ranch needs to figure out what's wrong and fix i...

Johnson gets on the board; Cowboys lose 34-14

3:05 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Just saw that Brad Johnson threw a touchdown pass; well, I didn't actually see it. I was monitoring the game on-line. I have to admit, I gave up on this game a long time ago to focus on the Bears game (I'm from Chicago).

I do look forward to hearing all the post-game comments from the players and coaches. Should be juicy.

Cowboys Trail by 24

2:11 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
George Riba

That 56 yard touchdown by Steven Jackson shows how far out of sync the Cowboys have fallen. It puts the Cowboys behind 31 to 7. Quarterback Brad Johnson has done nothing to show he is worthy of being a backup in the NFL and the Cowboys have done very little to show they have an urgency to win this game. The Cowboys are being out played and out coached in every way possible. Maybe this will be the wakeup call the need.

...

Out of control

2:09 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

This game is officially out of hand.

How bad was that Bennett false start on 4th down and 1? Potentially, huge. If the Cowboys get that first down, and then a touchdown (instead of eventually missing the field goal), it's 24-14 and the momentum has shifted. Now, it's simply a blow-out, and with Johnson in the game, the offense isn't explosive enough to make a huge comeback.

...

Cowboys go for it on 4th down

2:03 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Well, at least they tried to ... but then the Cowboys had a false start penalty, and now they'll have to kick.

I could see both sides of going for it on 4th and short from the 23, but in this game, I agreed with the call to go for it.

Oh man ... and now Folk just missed. Wow, this is UGLY.

James is back

1:53 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Just saw Bradie James break through and help on Demarcus Ware's sack - I have to admit, I'm flipping between the Cowboys game, the Bears game, and whatever else I can find during commercials. Good to see James is back.

Great return just now by Patrick Crayton, and now Keith Davis is down. Dallas can't afford to lose any more defensive backs. Ugh.

Halftime

1:39 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Let's have a quick look at the Cowboys numbers at halftime:

Barber: 15 carries, 61 yards, TD, 1 fumble lost
Johnson: 6-17, 66 yards, INT
Owens: 1 catch, 19 yards
Witten: 2 catches, 18 yards (and one VERY questionable penalty, that took away another 20-yard gain or so)

Again, is Johnson as a quarterback over-the-hill, or just rusty, or both? Either way, I'll stick with what I've been saying (and I saw Joe say i...

24-7 Rams

1:30 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

We're watching Brad Johnson run the 2-minute drill now, after the Rams just got a field goal to take a big lead.

How Johnson ends up doing on this drive may determine whether Romo gets in the game in the 2nd half. I wouldn't agree with the move, but I bet we see him if the Cowboys don't get a score here.

Back-to-back bad plays

1:09 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

First, Brad Johnson gets sacked to knock the Cowboys out of field position. Second, Deon Anderson can't keep the ball out of the end zone on a punt that should have easily been downed, at least at the 9-yard line (where I think a Cowboys originally touched it, before Deon lost it at the 2). Now, the Rams are driving again.

By the way, I'm with Joe, who earlier blogged that the Cowboys shouldn't bring in Romo. It's still early in the se...

Cowboys Defense So Lucky!!!

1:08 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

That should have just been a 92 yard touchdown for Donnie Avery.

There is no explanation why cornerback Mike Jenkins drifted from the far sideline to the middle of the field. There was safety help in the middle of the field and help underneath. He left Avery ALL ALONE!!!

Luckily for the defense, Mark Bulger's pass was just barely too long.

Disaster averted... but for long?

Another Uh-Oh

1:04 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Just when it appeared the Cowboys had weather the storm, Bradie James gets knocked out. This defense has been hurting enough with James in the game; he's one of the last guys the Cowboys needed to get injured. Hopefully it's not too bad.

Rams Were Supposed to be a Cakewalk

12:52 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
George Riba

Everything I heard is that the Rams were supposed to be the perfect patsy for the Cowboys to beat up on, while Quarterback Tony Romo takes the weekend off. Not so. The Rams had not scored 3 touchdowns in the first quarterback since November 11,2001 against Carolina. So much for an easy day in this Missouri city.

Bad Challenge

12:49 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Watching the game at home, I didn't think much of Wade Phillips' challenge on the Barber fumble. But the big problem I have is, Why not wait a few extra seconds before dropping the red flag? It was going to take a few moments to get the Rams offense back on the field, and during that time, the coaches upstairs could have presumably had another look or two at the replay. Why rush it? Have another look, and then decide whether it's a good idea t...

Rams throw the early round haymaker

12:40 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

This is not so much a Romo issue anymore ... what is going on with the defense? I don't pretend to know enough about football to answer that, but I do know that the Cowboys have now given up 21 points in less than one quarter of play to a team whose offense had been anemic through the first few weeks of the season.

If it wasn't already, it's gut-check time for this team. Who saw this coming, especially after the Cowboys first drive?

Rams Finally Learn How To Score Points

12:38 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
George Riba

St Louis was averaging 10.3 points per game, lowest in the NFL, but came out and scored 21 points in the first quarter against the Cowboys. Maybe their first win of the year over the Redskins wasn't a fluke afterall. Either that, or the Cowboys have sunk to new levels. They allowed the Rams to start in their territory three times, the third time came after a fumble by Marion Barber with :55 left in the first quarter.

Will the Cowboys Take the Risk?

12:37 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

ESPN's Ed Werder reported the Cowboys would consider playing Tony Romo, if Brad Johnson and the offense struggled.

Well, the Rams now lead 21-7, a bad snap and an interception have given the Rams a short field twice.

Will the Cowboys bring in Tony Romo?

Let me go on the record, I think it would be a bad idea. Don't risk the long-term health of Romo for the short-term gain of having him play against the Rams.

That is all.

Coaches CAN make a difference

12:31 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I may be jumping the gun a little with that one, but since Jim Haslett has taken over for the Rams, they've won in Washington, and now they're rolling on offense like they did earlier this decade. Haslett said he wanted to change the culture and attitude when he took over, and after one game and 10 1/2 minutes, he has.

14-7 Rams with 4:34 left in the first.

No Look Snap?

12:30 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

No look passes work in basketball..just ask the Mavericks Jason Kidd.

No look snaps in football - different story. New Quarterback Brad Johnson wasn't even looking when Andre Gurode snapped the ball on 3rd and long in the first quarter. Johnson smartly just fell on it, but it resulted in great field position for the Rams.

They started their ensuing drive on the Cowboys 44 yard line. And it didn't take long for Stephen Jack...

Cowboys Mistakes lead to Second Rams Touchdown

12:28 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
George Riba

It took only two possessions for the Cowboys injuries to show up and have an effect on the game. A snap to quarterback Brad Johnson came when he wasn't ready. The fumble put the ball at their only 8. Then Sam Paulescu showed why he's no Mat McBriar as he gave the Rams great field position with his first punt of 36 yards. The Rams followed with their another touchdown, their first red zone touchdown of the season. Dallas trails 14-to-7.

No Safety Help

12:23 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
George Riba

Anthony Henry got toasted on a 42 yard pass to Donnie Avery, but he could have used a little help from the Safety Roy Williams. The Rams needed just 1:51 to move the ball 62 yards to tie the game at 7.

Uh oh .... I'm sure it's not his fault

12:21 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

So on St. Louis' first drive, they convert a loooong touchdown pass to Donnie Avery, and who do we see chasing? Roy Williams ... welcome back.

All sarcasm aside, I really have no idea whether Avery was Williams' responsibility, but Roy always seems to be in the neighborhood for those big touchdowns, doesn't he?

Tony Who?

12:19 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

Just kidding...

But that opening drive couldn't have been any better for the Cowboys offense. They let that big offensive line push the Rams off the ball, and the drive was hi-lighted by Marion Barbber's 35 yard run.

But perhaps more important that the run blocking, the few times when Brad Johnson dropped back to pass, HE HAD TIME!!! He found T.O. for a first down, and if you give the 65 year old quarterback time, he'll put t...

Good first drive

12:14 PM Sun, Oct 19, 2008 |
Ted Madden

How about Brad Johnson? After seeing him for about 4 game minutes, I've decided the Cowboys should start him for the rest of the season and the Super Bowl.

OK, maybe not, but was there any better way for this game to start? Probably the best thing that can happen is for Dallas to win and Tony Romo to stay on the bench, and this start was a good way toward getting there.

Team of Destiny? No such thing

4:57 PM Fri, Oct 17, 2008 |
Ted Madden

After last night's historical comeback against Tampa, the Boston Red Sox might be looking like a team of destiny? How else to explain 8 runs in the final 3 innings to overcome a 7-0 deficit, if not fate?

If I learned one thing from the 2001 World Series, it's this: there is no such thing as a "Team of Destiny," and "fate" has no place in sports. 2001 is the year the Yankees made it to the world series the month after the 9/11 tragedy. ...

Phillips: Romo threw ball pretty well

3:52 PM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Tony Romo worked some plays with the first team, but Brad Johnson got most of the snaps.

"He threw the ball pretty well," Phillips said.

Romo could still play Sunday in St. Louis.

"There's a lot of things to worry about," Phillips said. "Some of it's executing running plays, securing the football and the injury itself."

Phillips said how Romo threw the ball is similar to how he's thrown the ball all year.

Despite a broken finger, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is at practice today.

Jose Gant, WFAA's assistant sports director, says Romo is with the team and threw the ball in warm-ups. However, backup Brad Johnson is working with the first team and Romo is watching from the side.

It's not yet clear if Romo will play Sunday. Johnson would start in his place.

Romo shouldn't rush to play

11:21 AM Thu, Oct 16, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

I can appreciate Tony Romo's desire to want to play Sunday against the 1-4 St. Louis Rams.

Problem is he has a broken pinky finger. Sure it's macho and even commendable for him to try and play with it, but it's not just about him.

If anything, after all the Dallas Cowboys have been through the past few days they should all realize this is about the team.

A healthy Brad Johnson is better than a fumble-prone Tony Romo w...

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo isn't practicing with that broken finger, but he is throwing the football already. He threw the ball before practice, but Cowboys coach Wade Phillips says he didn't watch and says nobody told him how Romo did.

It has been a week full of distractions for the Dallas Cowboys and head coach Wade Phillips.

Adam "Pacman" Jones was suspended, wide receiver Roy Williams was added and there were a string of injuries in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, including Tony Romo.

"I can't count on him coming back," Phillips said. "He's gone, that's what it looks like to me."

Dallas Cowboys punter Mat McBriar will miss at least six weeks and could miss the rest of the season, according to reports.

The Dallas Morning News reports McBriar, who suffered a fractured right foot when his punt was blocked in overtime, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks or possibly the entire season.

His agent, Jack Bechta, said the doctor's recommendation was that McBriar go on injured reserve, which would end his season.

Brad Johnson on starting for Cowboys

Brad Johnson is now the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, at least for a couple weeks. Tony Romo was injured in overtime Sunday.

"Obviously, it's unfortunate for Tony," Johnson said. "He means a lot to this team."

Johnson has been through this before, both times in Minnesota. In 1996 he replaced Warren Moon and in 2006 Dante Culpepper.

"I'm excited about the opportunity," he said.

Cardinals Take Control

5:32 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

The Cardinals have gotten serious about winning this football game. They have now scored the last two touchdowns in this game. The last one showed signs of patience and control as they drove 8 plays and 89 yards for a touchdown. Did you notice, that Anthony Henry paid the price as he got beaten several times for big plays, including the touchdown.

Cardinals Offense Finally Converts

5:24 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

The Cardinals came into this game with the 5th best offense in the league, and didn't show any kind of consistency until their first possession of the first half. They had no third down conversions until that drive, and quickly went 3-for-3 right before they scored their first offensive touchdown of the game. The key seems to be "settle down" after a first half that didn't resemble an NFL football game. Maybe we're in for real game now that bo...

Patrick Crayton Finds The End Zone

4:29 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

Wide Receiver Patrick Crayton's touchdown of 55-yards had help from Terrell Owens and Miles Austin. Both had blocks on the play that broke Crayton for the Cowboys first touchdown of the game. It's the first offensive touchdown of the game from two teams that boasted the top two offenses in the NFC.

That's Two Lucky Breaks for Romo

4:22 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

What's up with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo? He hasn't look crisp for several weeks now, and he now has two fumbles that he has simply gotten away with. Two lucky breaks that have gone in favor of the Cowboys. How long will that continue? The latest was ruled an incomplete pass, which took seven points off the boards for the Cardinals. How lucky can you get?

Finally A Third Down Conversion

3:47 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

Tony Romo's pass to Marion Barber for 13 yards, was the first, third down completion of the game for the Cowboys Dallas was 0-for-4 until that conversion. The Cowboys offense hasn't shown much of anything and Romo hasn't been much to write home about so far. At this point, he's 5-of-10, with no real consistency. And dare we say, Terrell Owens is catch less!

Romo not so lucky this time

3:42 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Does Tony Romo not want to hold the ball?

This is starting to get ridiculous.

Another fumble by Tony Romo, the play after Cardinals QB Kurt Warner fumbled.

That should be two for Romo today, but a mis-call the officials gives Romo one today.

This is a disturbing trend for Romo and Cowboys who are turning the ball over more than their opponents, which usually means you lose. They've been lucky so far this seas...

Back to Back Turovers

3:38 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

I'm starting wonder if any of these teams slept last night. A sloppy turnover by the Cardinals gave the Cowboys great field position at the Phoenix 25. Then on the next play, Betrand Berry chops the ball out of Tony Romo's arm, and the Cardinals Antonio Smith recovers at their own 28. Is anyone paying attention? Romo is is 0-for-2 passing, one lost fumble and which could easily have been two.

Romo off, but lucky

3:36 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Tony Romo sure doesn't look very sharp early in the game.

And he was quite lucky when he again lost the ball, but the officials ruled that he didn't fumble.

If that happened at the end of a close game, it would be a play -- like the Chargers game a few weeks ago -- that would be talked about relentlessly.

But it's only the first quarter.

Cowboys Get a Lucky Break

3:33 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

Cardinals thought they had a sack and a fumble on Quarterback Tony Romo, but the officials called the age old "in the grasp rule." The Whistle must have blown, and that means the fumble was not reviewable. Lucky break for the Cowboys, because Romo clearly fumbled. Did the Cowboys come to play and just to watch? Two three and outs make you wonder.

Snap the ball!

3:22 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Tony Romo really didn't want to take a delay of game penalty, but center Andre Gurode didn't see him waiving and clapping or didn't get what he was trying to communicate.

So the Cowboys take a 5-yard penalty on third and seven to make it third and 12, then an incomplete pass.

Cardinals have all the momentum.

Special teams again...

3:17 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Stop me if you have heard this before....

The Cowboys special teams gives up another big return, this one an opening kickoff return for a touchdown by J.J. Arrington.

The Cardinals won the coin toss, but opted to receive, which most teams don't know because of the new rule where teams can defer to the second half.

Worked out well for them this way.

J.J. Arrington's Kickoff Return Gets Cards Off And Running

The Cowboys inability to stop J.J Arrington from returning the kickoff 93-yards certainly got Dallas' attention. When he crossed the goal line, the local radio guys said "Take that Cowboys." It certainly sent a message to Dallas that the Cardinals are ready for the Cowboys, no matter what history shows. The last time the Cardinals had a kickoff returned for a touchdown was November 26, 2006 in Minnesota.

Cowboys And Cardinals Set To Kickoff

2:46 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
George Riba

The Cardinals have lost three straight games to the Cowboys, but that has done little to changed their frame of mind. The Cardinals seem very confident in their ability to steal a win from the Cowboys today, mainly because of their scoring punch. Their second in the NFC in scoring with 147 points and they have a big game quarterback in Kurt Warner. That can go a long way in a game like this, especially since the Cowboys aren't very healthy in ...

Dumb criminals target Dallas Cowboys

Oh and it gets more bizarre. The man police accuse of committing the robbery is former UNT quarterback Damon ...

It's not exactly a run to Mexico before a playoff game, but Felix Jones is in El Paso.

The box score won't look terrible for Tony Romo, but he sure was lucky to get his third touchdown.

His scoring pass to Patrick Crayton was tipped and found Crayton.

Carson Palmer just connected with T.J. Houshmandzadeh for a touchdown pass to bring the score to 17-13 Cowboys half way through the third quarter.

The offense didn't do much on its first drive of the half and the defense gave up a touchdown on the Bengals first drive.

Cowboys' passing game needs improvement

The Dallas Cowboys have run the ball very effectively so far this game.

But the passing game looks anemic.

Tony Romo is eight of 12 passing for 68 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboys do have 138 rushing yards. And offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has miraculously decided to get the ball to both Marion Barber and Felix Jones.

Cowboys defense keeping Bengals at bay

4:43 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys defense is doing a good job not giving up touchdowns when the Bengals offense gets a short field, like from the Tony Romo fumble or earlier in the game on a long kick return.

Sometimes a defense can only do so much with what it has to work with.

In this game they've done pretty good with what they have to work with, especially against a Bengals offense that has weapons in the passing game.

He has six carries for 25 yards, while teammate Chris Perry has just five yards on three carries.

Cowboys committed to running game

4:06 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys sure look like they are committed to running game, after abandoning it last week.

The Cowboys have rushed the 15 times and have 109 rushing yards in a little more than a quarter of play. Four Cowboys have carries, too.

Romo has all day to find Witten

3:58 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Tony Romo had plenty of time to dance around the pocket to find Jason Witten in the back of the end zone for a touchdown and to give the Cowboys a 17-0 lead over the hapless Cincinnati Bengals.

They really are that bad, 0-4 and it's looking 0-5 pretty easily at this point.

1st quarter story lines...

3:52 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

The 1st quarter is in the books and there is already some storylines.

1.) T.O. became the eighth player in league history to have 900 career catches. He was the third fastest receiver in history to accomplish the milestone.

2.) The Cowboys' running game is already better than last week. Felix Jones has a touchdown and Barber has eight carries for 44 yards.

3.) Chad Johnson is not involved. What will happen if he score...

Henry #15, Benson #32

3:52 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Chris Henry and Cedric Benson are both in uniform for the Cincinnati Bengals today.

Henry is wearing #15 and Benson #32.

Henry is coming of serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's conduct policy.

Henry was released by the Bengals following his fifth arrest in the offseason, but was brought back to the team by owner Mike Brown over the objections of coach Marvin Lewis.

The Bengals releas...

Ocho Cinco vs. Johnson

3:45 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

For the record, the Cincinnati Bengals' receiver formerly know as Chad Johnson, who has legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco is going by both in today's game.

The NFL will not let him change the name on the back of his jersey to Ocho Cinco (he wears #85) until his Johnson jerseys are sold.

But on the official lineup card and in announcements he is Ocho Cinco.

He could also be called non-factor so far this season ...

The press box is still talking!

3:43 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

The consensus in the press box is why didn't Felix Jones get any touches last weekend? I think it's a fair question? I know the Redskins did some things defensively, but if your going to use a first round pick on a guy and he has scored in his first three games, you have to get him the ball.

By the way, I think I was more impressed with Marc Colombo's block on the outside. I'm not sure Felix needed it, but Colombo decided to tattoo Jo...

Can Jason Garrett get Felix Jones the ball more, please?

3:34 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Felix Jones runs on fourth and three for 33-yards and a touchdown.

His first carry of the game. He also has a reception.

He's a play maker, who didn't get the ball last week. Why? Who knows.

In his very short NFL career, Jones has proven he is a difference maker.

He's electric. He makes plays. He scores touchdowns.

Give him the ball, OK?

Cowboys lead 10-0.

...

Barber, Felix Jones get the ball early

3:29 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Seven of the Cowboys' first nine offensive plays have gone to Marion Barber and Felix Jones.

Six runs by Barber and reception by Jones.

Last week the Cowboys only gave the ball to Barber on eight carries and Jones didn't get a rush or reception and the Cowboys lost.

Maybe it should be Adam 'Wrong Way' Jones

3:26 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

It's time for a new nick name for Adam 'Pacman' Jones.

His first quarter punt return went the wrong way. It was only a minus three yard return, but for a second it looked like he was running the entirely wrong direction.

So you may now call him Adam 'Wrong Way' Jones, it also kind of works with all of his previous legal troubles.

Is Green Bay in trouble?

3:24 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

The Cowboys felt pretty good about their win in Green Bay, after today it's not looking as impressive.

The Atlanta Falcons took a rookie quarterback to Lambeau Field and beat the Packers, 27-24 on Sunday. Matt Ryan completed 16 of 26 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Who would have guessed it? After five games the Falcons are (3-2) and the Packers are (2-3).

Cowboys get first interception

3:16 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The lack of turnovers have been killing the Dallas Cowboys this season.

So it makes perfect sense that on the first offensive play for the Bengals that linebacker Greg Ellis interceptions a deflected Carson Palmer pass.

The last Cowboys' interception came Dec. 22, 2007 in the Cowboys game vs. Carolina by the hands of Anthony Henry.

And in the Cowboys first offensive possession they ran on the first two plays with Marion...

Cowboys win... the coin toss

3:12 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys have won the coin toss and will utilize the new NFL rule and defer to the second half. Bengals will get the ball.

Interesting captains for the Cowobys:

Terrel Owens (give him the ball)
Greg Ellis
Marion Barber (let him run)
Ken Hamlin
Keith Davis (starting at safet today)

Redskins do it again

3:03 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Maybe the Redskins aren't the worst team in the NFC East after all.

Washington has gone on the road in consecutive weeks to defeat the Dallas Cowboys and today the Philadelphia Eagles, 23-17.

The key is they aren't making mistakes.

Jason Campbell again did not throw an interception.

They have a strong running game (Clinton Portis had 145 rushing yards today) and an effective enough defense.

Maybe there...

Cowboy fans are booing already!

2:32 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

The very few Cowboy fans in the stadium at this point just got done booing.

Jerry Jones must have decided that it would be a good time to take a picture. Jerry, T.O., and the one and only Ocho Cinco just got done smiling in the middle of the field.

Cowboy fans decided to show their appreciation to Ocho for his comments earlier in the week.

"If I score Sunday, I love Dallas so much, I'm going to take my helmet off, get...

Palmer in, Newman out for today's game

2:28 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will not play today. He is the only surprise among the inactive Cowboys for today's game.

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will start.

Specalists all dressed up and ready to go

1:57 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

More than a hour before kickoff, and per usual, the Cowboys' special teams players are the first dressed out players on the field.

As a comparison, linebacker Greg Ellis is wearing his game ants without pads and just a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off.

Cover two with Woodson, Williams

1:48 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson and injured current Cowboys safety Roy Williams are engaged and a prolonged conversation amid a throng of fans on the side of the end zone here on the field of Texas Stadium.

The interesting things is fans seem more interested in talking to Woodson than Williams.

More friendly between Cowboys and Bengals

1:43 PM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

There is a big difference between the pregame on the field aspects this week in the Cowboys-Bengals match up than last week between the Cowboys and Redskins.

Last week was a rivalry, this week it's two out of conference opponents.

Several players and coaches have been exchanging pleasantries between the sides.

And this is the last time the Bengals will play in Texas Stadium.

What to watch: Cowboys-Bengals

11:56 AM Sun, Oct 05, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys will host the Cincinnati Bengals this afternoon looking to get a win after suffering their first loss of the season last week to the Washington Redskins.

The Bengals enter the game 0-4 and with a banged up starting quarterback, Carson Palmer. He is expected to play.

Here is what else to watch for today:

1. T.O. How much of an effort will the Cowboys make to get Terrell Owens the ball? We've all heard...

TCU Looks To Rebound

4:57 PM Sat, Oct 04, 2008 |
Josh Harvey

We are a couple minutes away from the start of (1-3)San Diego State at (4-1)TCU. The Frogs will look to rebound after losing to #1 ranked OU last weekend.

I am in the press box and fielding questions from the World Wide Web.

Starting TCU Quarterback Andy Dalton will not be playing today. Junior Marcus Jackson will get the start. Jackson has had spot starts in his career throwing for over 800 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The...

Cowboys big Favorites

3:16 PM Fri, Oct 03, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Earlier today is the first time I heard the line on the Cowboys-Bengals game -- and it's huge. At last check, the Cowboys are favored by 16.

That's a college line, or a Patriots line from 2007, and it sounded absolutely crazy. But after thinking about it for a few minutes, it might not be far off. Despite playing a possible let-down game against an 0-4 opponent, Dallas should be properly motivated by the Washington loss. And, and this...

Wade Phillips has fun with 'he wants the ball' talk

4:07 PM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

No Wade Phillips wasn't talking about wide receiver Terrell Owens, who said he should be more involved in the Cowboys offense after Sunday's loss to the Redskins.

He is talking about outside linebacker Anthony Spencer who Phillips says is healthy.

When talking about Spencer's return and his return of a short kickoff Sunday, Phillips decided to reference the Owens saga.

"We try to get him (Spencer) the ball too," Phillip...

Cowboys injury update: Gurode, Watkins miss practice

4:02 PM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Cowboys center Andre Gurode and safety Pat Watkins both missed practice today.

Watkins probably won't play Sunday with Keith Davis starting in his place.

Gurode rolled his ankle in practice yesterday and coach Wade Phillips expects him to play Sunday. Cory Proctor played center today with Montrae Holland moving to guard.

Defensive lineman Stephen Bowen and Tank Johnson were limited in practice.

Fullback Deon An...

Ocho Cinco in a world of his own

3:37 PM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Normally, I don't pay too much attention to what comes out of the mouth of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco (formerly Chad Johnson).

But this week the 0-4 Bengals are playing the Dallas Cowboys, so it's my business now.

The verbose receiver picked a heck of a week to come to town. Since Terrell Owens' post game media session, we've been consumed with Owens comments.

Now #85 has something to say too. He...

Wild Wednesday at Valley Ranch

10:57 AM Thu, Oct 02, 2008 |
Ted Madden

Yesterday at the Ranch was much more tense than normal, and it started (of course) with the TO interview. It was his first meeting with the media since he said after the game that he thought the ball didn't come his way often enough.

After calling out ESPN on at least three occasions, claiming that he was being "villified" just a week after being praised for his hustle game in Green Bay, saying that "you guys" (in the media) are makin...

T.O. Is Playing the Media Like a Fiddle

6:10 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |
George Riba

His biography says that Terrell Owens was a merchandising major so maybe that's where he went wrong. He should have been a communications major because he knows how to communicate.

He doesn't always know the most diplomatic way to answer a question, and why should he? That wouldn't create controversy.

If you think he doesn't understand the media and what he is saying these days, you're dead wrong. I think he's playing the m...

Sorting out the T.O.-Romo saga

3:12 PM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

Sometimes innocent things just get blow out of proportion.

Problem is when you are Terrell Owens and have a history of saying and doing outrageous and often team-destroying things everything you say is subject to intense scrutiny, even if it makes perfect sense.

As Tony Romo said today, he wants guys around him who want the ball. There is nothing worse than a player, much less a marquee player, saying he doesn't want the ball o...

T.O.: 'It could be worse'

11:19 AM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |

What does Terrell Owens have to say about his post game comments Sunday after the Redskins loss?

Cowboys sign WR... to practice squad

10:05 AM Wed, Oct 01, 2008 |
Aaron Chimbel

The Dallas Cowboys have signed former OU wide receiver Travis Wilson to their practice squad.

Wilson was originally a third round draft pick (78th overall) in 2006 by the Cleveland Browns out of Oklahoma.

He played in four games with one start in his two years with the Browns, recording two catches for 32 yards.

He was released by Cleveland on the final roster reduction in 2008 and signed to the Denver Broncos practi...
