Will divorce be distraction for A-Rod?

Alex Rodriguez is use to the spotlight. The wife of the former Texas Ranger shortstop and current Yankees third baseman filed for divorce Monday. (Read full story here.)

It now begs the question of what impact his personal life will have on his performance.

There are two ways to look at it. One is that he will be distracted by the media frenzy, uncertainty over his marriage and what will happen to his two children.

The other possibility is that his performance won't change much, that his time playing baseball will be his escape from it all. It'll be the one normal thing in his life.

This season his batting average (.323) is his highest since his first full season in the majors. The rest of his offensive numbers are pretty much inline with his career averages, especially considering he spent some time on the DL in May with a right quad strain.

Still, with the Yankees potentially not going to the playoffs for the first time since before the strike-shortened season of 1994, the intense pressure on A-Rod will be as pointed as ever.

Not to mention he has been linked to music legend Madonna.

Will the pressure get to A-Rod? Well he's show he can put up big numbers in the regular season, so don't look for that to change. Since he's struggled in the playoffs, that's where the scrutiny would be the greatest, but the Yankees aren't likely to make it anyways.

He'll get blamed for that anyways.

Maybe the extra time off will be well spent on his family.

What do you think?
