A former SMU Mustang tennis player is having a mercurial rise through the men's doubles tennis rankings. Johan Brunstrom broke into the top 100 at No. 94 after winning his first tournament and then qualifying for Wimbledon and winning a first-round match. Brunstrom and partner Julian Rojer won the International Championships of Andalusia over Dick Norman and James Cerretani, 6-4, 6-3, in the final for his first pro title. In Wimbledon qualifying, Brunstrom and Australian teammate Adam Feeney beat Patrick Briaud and Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the main draw. In the opening round, Brunstrom and Feeney defeated Chris Haggard and Lovro Zovko in five-sets, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The duo lost in round two, however, as they fell to the 12th-seeded team of Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Brunstrom then jumped 20 spots in the Stanford ATP Doubles rankings to 94th in the world. |
