With the trade for Adam Jones and the drafting of Mike Jenkins in the first round, Dallas Cowboys rookie fifth round pick Orlando Scandrick of Boise State could be overlooked. But the Cowboys appear to have made a commitment to the cornerback by signing him to a four-year, $1.85 million contract, according to dallascowboys.com, the team's official site. What's notable about the signing is that the Cowboys customarily don't sign rookies until right before training camp. Scandrick joins a corner group that has been bulked up in the offseason. Scandrick, Jones and Jenkins join incumbent starters Terence Newman and Anthony Henry. Scandrick will likely make the team, but will be counted on to contribute on special teams, because unless Henry is moved to safety or there are injuries, he's unlikely to see much time as a corner with the Cowboys new found depth. Of course Jones is still suspended for the regular season. The Cowboys expect to find out about a possible reinstatement by the beginning of the regular season. No other Cowboys from this year's draft class have signed, including Jenkins. It's now less than a week before the Boys head to Oxnard, Calif. for training camp. Their first practice is scheduled for one week from today. |
