One thing I learned a few years ago is that I would make a lousy talent evaluator. This became apparent to me when LaMarcus Aldridge did so well at Texas for a year, and is now excelling in the NBA (not to mention he was a high school McDonald's All-American). The first time I saw him play in person was when he was a senior at Seagoville, at a Tuesday night game if I remember right. He was good - don't get me wrong - but he wasn't as good as I'd expected, after everything I'd heard about him. Aldridge didn't seem to be playing with a whole lot of effort, and it appeared his scoring was more a result of him being taller than everyone else. Now, I bring this up not to say anything bad about Aldridge, but to say everything bad about my ability to recognize real talent. Aldridge is obviously the real deal, and apparently Randolph has the chance to be the same. He looks way to skinny, but at the same time, he's only 18 (he'll be 19 next month). While guys like Randolph can put on weight as they continue to get older, not many get much taller. It will be interesting to see where he gets picked. |
