Mavs need to be dealing like Blazers

The Dallas Mavericks have the 51st pick in tomorrow's NBA draft, that's near the bottom of the second round. They have no first round pick because of the Jason Kidd trade and have a roster full of old players.

Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers, according to The Associated Press, have acquired New Orleans first pick (#27) for cash.

Some perspective: The Mavs drafted Josh Howard at 29 in 2003.

The Blazers have a young team full of talent and want to add to it. They have the 13th pick too.

The Hornets hope to use the money saved on a draft pick to sign free agents. Of course the Hornets beat the Mavs in the first round of this year's NBA playoffs.

The Kidd trade severely limited the Mavs future. They need to be aggressive with Mark Cuban's money and focus on acquiring young players. Howard is the most recent Mavs pick still on the team.
