I spent part of the afternoon with Jordan Spieth (pronounced Speeth), a 14-year-old sophomore-to-be at Jesuit. This kid is one of the top junior golfers in the country; it's one thing to read a press release claiming that, and another to actually watch him hit balls with your own eyes. Watch the story here. And read it here. Jordan will play in the Junior British Open in July. He and a girl from California were selected by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) to represent the United States. After watching him play a couple holes, and after talking to his instructor Cameron McCormick, it was plain to see that Jordan is legit. After getting some video of him practicing, we took him out to shoot him playing a couple of holes. The first one was a par-3, and he hit two tee shots for us. The ball mark of the first was only 2-3 feet away from the ball mark from his second shot. When he came to the green to putt, he wanted one practice putt before we started taping -- and he promptly knocked it in, a slippery 15 footer. After we had our shot set up, he missed the next putt, then hit the third. Before we headed out to the course, his instructor and I were talking off camera, and Cameron said that Jordan could probably beat a couple of the professional players he works with - guys not on the PGA Tour but who make a living playing golf. This from a kid who won't be able to drive a car until late next summer. He's pretty incredible, and I look forward to seeing how he does at next month's Junior Open in England.
