Quick Review

8:41 PM Fri, May 30, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

I had a chance to read the Sports Illustrated article on Josh Hamilton...

Not a whole lot of new stuff that we haven't already told you here on channel 8, but its worth reading to get a refresher on all the obstacles this guy created for himself, but has managed to overcome.

The one thing that sticks with me after reading the article is Hamilton's post-game rule about restaurants. He says he never eats with his teamates. I un...

Safety Roy Williams Back from Vacation

9:16 PM Wed, May 28, 2008 |
George Riba

Cowboys Safety Roy Williams was back at Valley Ranch this week after missing the first week of the teams organized team activity, or OTA's. Williams didn't talk, but Cornerback Bradie James dispilled previous rumors that Wiliams was on a cruise.

"I just knew he was in Mexico," said James. "That seems to be a Cowboys hot spot, somewhere in Mexico. I called him. He told me he was out there."

Williams apparently rented a house ...

TCU Needs To Get Out of The First Round

6:04 PM Tue, May 27, 2008 |
George Riba

Schlossnagle.gifTCU Head Baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle has been on the job for five seasons, and has yet to miss the NCAA tournament. Now he says, he might have his best chance yet to advance.

"It's most impressive team I've ever ...

Tampa's Turnaround

12:35 PM Tue, May 27, 2008 |
Ted Madden

A couple of years ago, I had a sports discussion with some friends of mine, and we tried to rank the major league baseball teams based on how "high-profile" they were. It was somewhat of a vague description, but we tried to take into account the organization's history, national appeal, current place in the baseball world, etc. Anyway, just to give you an idea, some of the top teams were obviously the Yankees, the Cubs and the Red Sox. The cons...

Heaven Sent

Joe Trahan

Just wanted to give you the atmosphere from the 18th hole at yesterday's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Those of us in the local media who were there were assembled behind the 18th green. So, while we knew Phil Mickelson had driven the ball well left into the trees, we couldn't see him make his approach shot on 18 because of all the tree cover. So, after he surveyed the shot and went back towards the ball, we waited and watch...

Rangers back to .500

1:48 PM Sat, May 24, 2008 |
Ted Madden

With their win last night, the Rangers are back to even, with a 25-25 record. I don't know if even the die-hardest Ranger fans expect it to last, but for now, it's nice that they aren't already out of the race for a playoff spot, which is what it felt like last year at this time.

Also, how about the year Josh Hamilton is having? Anything I say here will only be repetitive -- the guy's statistics speak for themselves -- except maybe th...

Crowne Plaza Invitational Has Had Some Crazy Moments

7:27 PM Thu, May 22, 2008 |
George Riba

Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth has a rich golf history, and with that history, some great stories.

Mark Brooks grew up watching the tournament as a kid. "It was a little wilder in those days in the 70's, and since I've been playing, I haven't seen much. I've seen nothing," he says laughing.

In 1993, Ian Baker-Finch made national head lines when he got a little breezy on the par 3, 13th.

"He took his pants off and...

Baseball is my friend

12:39 PM Thu, May 22, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I just turned on the Rangers game at the office, they're up 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd in Minnesota. I love afternoon baseball. It makes for a good background while at my desk or in the edit bay.

Baseball is like a good friend. It doesn't demand much from you; it doesn't require a whole lot of attention. You can have a game on while working, or at home while you're reading or on the computer, and it just makes pleasant company. And t...

Stars fans came through

5:10 PM Tue, May 20, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I was at the game last night, and two things stood out above everything else: the arena was packed in time for face-off. This was not the standard Dallas late-arriving crowd; everyone was in their seats (or standing in front of them) by the time the game began, and even for the national anthem.

The other thing that was great was the way the fans showed their appreciation to the Stars in the final seconds. As the last 10 secon...

Stars Look Ahead to Next Season

11:53 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |
George Riba

As you might expect, it was a very quite lockerrom after the Stars lost to the Red Wings Monday night. They lost the series 4-games to 2.. A team that had come so far this season ended up two wins short of going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

"It was a combination of hoping to win and Detroit pushing the issue and wanting to win," said a disappointed Head Coach Dave Tippett.

Tippett described Detroit as a very good hockey team. How...

In Game Report: Good Night and Good Luck

8:11 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

And that'll just about do it for the Stars season.

With the Stars on a power play, Brenden Morrow tried a cross-ice pass near Detroit's blue line. Henrick Zetterberg as there to pick it off, and race toward Marty Turco. Zetterberg buried the short-handed goal and the Stars season all with one deft flick of the wrist.

4-0 Red Wings.

In the immortal words of Edward R. Murrow: Good night and good luck.

In Game Report: Ouch babe!!!

7:43 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

It couldn't have started out any worse fo the Stars in game 6 of the Western Conference finals. The Stars failed to score on their first power play chance, and then gave up the first goal of the game to Chris Draper, the last guy they wanted to score after Draper's cheap shot to Brenden Morrow's head in game 5.

But then it just got worse. A power play for the Red Wings turned into a 2-0 lead when Pavel Datsyuk punched in a point bla...

Keep Your Eyes On Turco

3:49 PM Mon, May 19, 2008 |
George Riba

Tonight we'll see how good a prognosticator Stars Goaltender Marty Turco's old college coach at the University of Michigan is. When I talked to him in Ann Arbor, Michigan last week, he was convinced that once Turco got rolling, he would be tough to stop. " I mean I wouldn't be surprised," says Red Berenson. "He just needs one good game at Joe Louis and everything will change."

Well Turco got a good game under his belt in Joe Louis Ar...

Captain Brenden Morrow scores with 5:26 left. Ok, If they can't hang on to a 3-1 lead, we've got some major problems.

In Game Report: Does Any Lead Feel Safe Against the Red Wings?

9:09 PM Wed, May 14, 2008 |
Sean Hamilton

Is it me? Or does a lead not feel safe against this Red Wings team.

The Stars are up 2-1 with 8 minutes left in the game and I feel like the Red Wings have the advantage.

If the Stars manage to hang on and win this one, they only have to do it 3 more times. And if the Stars do pull off a victory in this series against the Red WIngs... I'm going on the record now and calling it the greatest comeback in the history of sports...

In Game Report: Stars Break Through!

8:42 PM Wed, May 14, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

It took 219 minutes and 38 seconds, but the Stars have finally pulled it off. They've got a lead!!!

Stephane Robidas blasted a shot from the right face-off circle, and Loui Eriksson was there to stuff in the rebound for the 1-0 lead with 22 seconds left in the second period. It's the first time in the entire series that the Stars have lead a game.

Marty Turco has made some spectaclar saves to keep a clean sheet so far. 2...

In Game Report: More Missed Opportunities

8:10 PM Wed, May 14, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

The Stars were much more dominant in this first period than they were in the first 20 minutes of game three, but again have nothing to show for it.

Much of the first 20 minutes was played in the Red Wings zone, the Stars forcing the Wings to take 3 penalties, but still failed to find the back of the net. Dallas will look back on this series and wonder what happened to their special teams. The Stars now 1-for-18 on the power play. Yo...

Mavs introduce Carlisle

4:47 PM Wed, May 14, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I thought it was very interesting how Rick Carlisle began his press conference today. In his opening comments, he expressed his appreciation to ESPN for getting a chance to work with them for the past year. Carlisle also said this about his one year at ESPN: "It is the gold standard in sports, and for me, the greatest sports organization I've been a part of, until today."

Here's the thing: have you EVER heard of a current coach or athl...

Marty Turco's Former College Coach Seems Baffled

3:03 PM Tue, May 13, 2008 |
George Riba

Marty Turco's former college coach has been watching the Western Conference finals and can't figure out why Turco and the Dallas Stars haven't beaten the Red Wings yet.

"It could be a combination of a lot of things," says Red Berenson who won two National Championships with Turco as his goaltender. "I'd like to put a record down and say this is the way its gonna stay, I mean I wouldn't be surprised, he just needs one good game at Joe L...

Quick Poll: Will the Stars Win Game 4?

2:25 PM Tue, May 13, 2008 |
Sean Hamilton

I just took a quick poll of the sports staffers working in the WFAA sports department today?

Question: Will the Stars win game 4?

George Riba, Reporter: No, the Red Wings are just playing to well.

Joe Trahan, Anchor-Reporter: No, not even if the Stars play their best game of the series.

Sean Hamilton, Sports Exec Producer: Yes, this Stars team isn't going...

In Game Report: Thought the Tide was Turning

8:41 PM Mon, May 12, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

For a few minutes it looked like the Stars fortunes may have been changing.

After dominating the first period, but still trailing 2-1 after one, Brad Richards got a lucky bounce. From the left corner, he threw a shot toward the goal, it bounced off a skate and past Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood. I made a note, "Is this where the Stars turn this series around?"

Not so much. Eight minutes later, the Red Wings found a streaking...

In Game Report: Everything but the Net

7:59 PM Mon, May 12, 2008 |
Joe Trahan

From their energy to their style of play and their execution, things couldn't have been much better for the Stars in the first period, except for the most important thing, that is. The puck didn't hit the back of the net enough.

The Stars dominated the 1st 20 minutes of game 3 in their best-of-seven against Detroit, but only managed to get 7 shots on goal, with Nick Grossman netting the lone goal. I'm not a hockey purist, but it su...

Stars looking for Rocky-like upset

11:29 AM Sun, May 11, 2008 |
Ted Madden

I got home late last night after covering the class 5A high school state track meet in Austin (by the way, if you want to see just how good the athletes in Texas are, go watch one of these). I had recorded the Stars game on DVR, and here are a couple of observations, and please remember, these are coming from a hockey novice.

Marty Turco appeared to become a lot more active after the 1st period, almost as if he realized he was going to...

The DVR's set because I won't be at home in time to catch the beginning, but I can't wait to see what the Stars have in store during the Western Confernence finals starting tonight in Detroit.

And that's a big deal for...

Can Turco Turn Away the Red Wings?

3:38 PM Tue, May 06, 2008 |
Sean Hamilton

Most educated hockey fans will probably pick the Red Wings to down the Stars in 5 or 6 games. But do you think these Stars might be a team of destiny?

The winner of a hockey series is usually determined by who has the best guy between the ...

Rookies Mom Passes Out During Draft

6:29 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 |
George Riba

Its always fun talking to the rookies when they arrive at Valley Ranch for their first workouts. They have no idea what to expect from the Cowboys or the Media.

But the Cowboys second pick in the first round, Cornerback Mike Jenkins from South Florida, had more than enough excitement in his home on draft day.

When Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones called Jenkins, his mother passed out. "My mom heard the call," he said, "and she was s...
