Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage has noticed a new trend in NASCAR this year. Cheverolet, which dominated NASCAR last year, is winless so far this year. But his immediate concern is with the tire issue raised in Atlanta last weekend. Goodyear provided NASCAR teams with a compound that drove the drivers crazy. Did you see Tony Stewart's quote? He said this: "I can't say its surprising," he said. "Goodyear can't build a tire that's worth a crap. They got run out of Formula One, they got run out of CART, the IRL, they got run out of World of Outlaw Sprint Cars, they got run out of USAC's division becuase they couldn't keep up, and couldn't make a quality enough product. This weekend shows they're true colors and what they're about." Wow! You gotta love drivers who have an opinion. Speedway Motorsports Inc. owns Texas Motor Speedway and the sister track in Atlanta. They're almost identical, both are mile and half ovals, both have 24-degrees of banking, but NASCAR says the tires used in Atlanta, will not be the same compound used in Texas. Instead, they'll use the same tire they used last year. Go figure. Different car, same tire. Sounds tricky! "The atlanta thing causes concern," says Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage. "The good news is we don't have that tire, and we know we have a tire compound that performed very well here a year ago." But as positive as that sounds, he'd like Goodyear to do more testing in Texas or at least have a longer practice session when the teams arrive in April. Goodyear says no. NASCAR says no as well. So, keep your fingers crossed that Goodyear is right. Afterall, they did have one tire test back in January but it could be an interesting weekend. |
