tobychihuahua.jpgHere's young Toby, the Chihuahua. He came from an abused home until he was saved by the volunteers from Chihuahua Rescue. When they got him his two front legs had healed improperly into abnormally angled and even backward positions from where his owner threw him off of a balcony and never got him any medical treatment for his broken legs.

Chihuahua Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help this breed find a better home from the conditions that they are currently living. The group ensures that each dog is current in their vaccinations and checkups. They also pay for any additional veterinary costs to get the dogs back on their feet and in good medical condition. In the case of Toby, an additional $3,000 was spent for his surgery to correct his legs.

Like many animal rescue groups, they rely on volunteers to do all of the work from foster care to taking doggies to the vet to working with animal shelters and the public on saving dogs from being put to sleep or that are in harm's way. And even though they accept donations, they still fund a lot of costs out of their own pockets.

Karen Hales, who is Toby's foster mother has seen many of their dogs that range in age from puppies to adults get placed in loving homes. They work with new owners on learning the personalities of each dog and finding the best match for their needs.

"We know each dog and want them to be in a home where not only they are happy but so are the owners," she said. "We want success stories and happy beginnings."

Little Cutie, pictured below was rescued by the group after her owners, who just moved into a 1/2 million dollar home tired of her. Her owners took her to the vet to have her put to sleep even though she was healthy. That's where Chihuahua Rescue saved the day and more importantly, her life.

"There was and is absolutely nothing wrong with her," said Sue Hempfling, the southwest coordinator of the group. "Pets are not a disposable item to kill after changing your mind that you don't want them any more. Fortunately, we heard about Little Cutie before it was too late."

Each dog has a story. Some from owners like Little Cutie's who tired of the pet. Others are abandoned babies and adults found on streets or in a shelter. But all are adoptable ready by the time they come out of their foster home. What they all have in common - they're looking for a nice loving home to call their own.

The group holds events all around the metroplex for adopting the doggies at locations like the PetSmart in Garland.

"We have them all ready with a new collar to start their new lives," said Sue. "Every dog deserves to have a new collar to start his or her new life."

And when their dogs are adopted out, saying "good-bye" is the toughest part of their job.

"Every adoption is bittersweet," said Sue. "Sure we get attached to our dogs, but we also know that after they leave to a happy home that is lets us rescue one more. And there are plenty more."
