Astros in Florida

While no one wants to panic, we're not exactly seeing the kind of spring we would like out of the Astros. Admittedly, with the World Baseball Classic, players like Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt and LaTroy Hawkins are not with the club, but have you noticed their record lately? 1-8, ouch.

Spring games don't mean didly, still 16-0 wipeouts don't do anything for confidence. What's worse, It's not just the pitching that's bad, the hitting isn't too hot either. We all are hearing the right things, "I was working on a pitch," "I felt good," "I was spotting the ball well." If there's one thing that tir...

When will the "steroids era" end?

News item: A lawyer who represented Roger Clemens last
year when he denied under oath that he used performance enhancing
drugs has been chosen to lead the Justice Department lawyers now
investigating the retired pitching great. President Barack Obama announced Thursday that Lanny Breuer, an accomplished lawyer in private practice, was his choice to run the department's criminal division.

Isn't it time for the Justice Department to drop its investigation into whether or not Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he testified last year. The hearing was political grandstanding then, and now a y...

Promote hockey, not fighting

As a minor league team the Houston Aeros don't get much television exposure. First professional hockey is a tough sell in the Southwest, but perhaps most importantly it is a minor league. So with some degree of curiosity, I watched a little of their recently televised game against the Toronto Marlies. But no sooner did I turn the game on than I was reminded why the game is even a tougher sell. Within minutes, there was fight.

As it turned out it was more like a dance, but what was more of a concern were the remarks from one of the announcers. "You can't be a hockey fan unless you like to watch a fight....

Crying over the Comets

News Item: Rockets Owner Les Alexander releases a statement regarding the disbanding of the Houston Comets:
"This is a sad day for me personally, as well as for all who worked so hard to bring women's basketball to our great city, the Comets were a source of deep pride for all Houstonians... The team was a great source of inspiration and had a great impact on thousands of young women everywhere."
In a word, Please!
Talk about disingenuous, the moment the Rockets owner decided he needed to sell the team it was the moment the Comets were put on life support, sadly the league finally pulled the plug....

It is high time for a college football playoff system

President-elect Barack Obama is right; we need a college football playoff period. While we hope he can use his "bully pulpit" to influence the powers that be, but with a new influx of cash coming from Disney, there's little chance the BCS will be broken up anytime soon.
As it stands now, it does not look like the two best teams in college football will meet for the BCS championship, but that shouldn't come as much of a shock because the BCS system has faltered before. One could argue the two best teams this season are in same conference this season even if the polls say differently.

Let's look at th...

Beating Tulsa

In the wake of the Houston Tulsa game Saturday night, the loudest cheers heard may not have been at Robertson Stadium. They may have been about 10 minutes from there, over at Rice University. Gloating may be an evil, but it certainly feels good. You see a year ago Tulsa coach Todd Graham played Rice, like a bass drum, and beat it back to Oklahoma faster than a Sooner on a land grab.

Graham coached the Owls for one year leading them to their first bowl game in 45 seasons. He brought back winning football to a campus which was competitive in the 60's and earned a fat new contract. So good the deal was, Gr...

Big hits and late hits

It is interesting to read the wires today. There is all kind of talk about late hits in the NFL costing defensive players all kinds of money. And from the college ranks an apology from UH Defensive End Philip Hunt on his shot that knocked Tulane Quarterback Joe Kemp out of Saturday's game.

No question football at times is a brutal sport. Some of the pictures we've been showing on Channel 11 lately have been ugly. Vikings Defensive End Jared Allen says he didn't mean to nail Texans Quarterback Matt Schaub with not one but two shots to the knee. Give Schaub credit, he tried to play through the pain, but ...
