Butch Alsandor: January 2009 ArchivesEvery time I go to Strake Jesuit, I'm reminded of the 12 years I spent in Catholic School. The uniforms, the discipline, the quality education. I even have memories of Sister John Bosco and her pal "Mr. Ruler." "Ouch !" But I also remember the commitment in the classroom bleeding over to the athletic field. The same thing is happening at Strake Jesuit. The basketball team is now ranked no. 1 in Texas after rolling to a perfect 24-and 0 record. Last season the Crusaders won their district, but were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round. After 17 seasons in the N.B.A., Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo is the elder statesman of the league. But he also knows his way around the political landscape in Washington. Because of his fund raising efforts with his Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, the 7 foot 2 center is used to rubbing shoulders with Washington's elite. But everytime I call him a politician, he gives me the finger shake and says, Man, I really love to listen to talk radio. I don't care if its Rush Limbaugh, Jim Rome, Air America, whatever. Say what you will about the quality of the callers and their silly trade proposals, it does provoke a discussion. |
