You have to like the way the pieces are
falling into place for Jeff Van Gundy and
the Rockets.
Officially ,the Rockets have no comment .
But it appears free agent guard Bonzi Wells is preparing
for a wedding in his family ,
and a soon to be consummated marriage to the Rockets.

Just like you, I've watched the Astros go down
this road to the post season before.
Its like the last call for alcohol at a bar, only the Astros
are rushing to the playoffs, not to get a drink .
Well, maybe to the post season and a drink, who can
really say.
You just have to shake your head. I mean really ,
9 straight wins is amazing .
Their last defeat was way back on September 19.

Let me start with a question, if a football team's offense
is like a car, is it time for the Titans to give Vince Young
the keys ?
I say why not , and the sooner the better.
In my mind, it comes down to two things . First, is starting
Vince a decision that will hurt the team?
No, the Titans are 0-3 and going nowhere fast.

Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell didn't have a Hallmark moment,
he had a Hallmark game .
Mark cared enough to send his very best effort
in a 31- to 15 rout of the Texans.
Now I realize this is a new year , with a new coaching staff , and new
players , but it looks an awful lot like last year.

It was the most relaxed clubhouse I've ever been in.
Craig Biggio was telling me how he's been a life long Redskins fan,
Jason Hirsh was checking out ESPN, and Aubrey Huff was
catching up on his reading.
This team has nothing to lose , so they are letting it all
hang out and its working.
The proof is in Luke Scott's 3-run walk off homer on
Saturday night, giving the Astros a 7-to-4 victory
over the Cardinals , their third consective win over the Red Birds.

According to defensive end Jason Babin, coach Karmelowicz
is always talking about "grill work" how this defense needs
facemask to facemask contact.
Coach Karmelowicz can be an "old school" kinda guy,
but I agree with him. A little attitude on this defense
could go a long way .

With the Bush administration underway in New Orleans, and
Domanick Davis training his pit bulls while recovering
from knee surgery, the Texans best bet might be
a running back by committee.
At least until someone can separate themselves from the pack.
Will it be rookie Wali Lundy, veteran Ron Dayne, or the newest
Texan Samkon Gado.

Maybe its just the baseball gods getting even with
the Astros, but a September run to the playoffs is
starting to look more and more remote .
The Phillies topped the Astros 6-4 on Sunday completing
a weekend sweep at Minute Maid, leaving the Astros
6 and a half games back in the race for the wildcard.

In the blink of an eye it was over .
There was no time to run to the fridge for a beer
or a snack .
If you did , you missed the first two touchdowns as
the Colts blasted the Texans 43-to-24.

Watching Texans cornerback dunta robinson glide through
another practice session, I couldn't help but think he's going
to be a busy man on Sunday.
Robinson understands Peyton Manning will present a stern test
for the Texans secondary.
But at this point, he's not concerned with the point spread
for the game, Manning's completion percentage ,
or even the lotto numbers .

After going to the Texans locker room on Wednesday
it was clear to me that in the N.F.L.,
there's not much time to celebrate the victories ,
or mourn the losses .
What I saw was a Texans team that had already moved
on from the loss to the eagles , and was now focusing in
on Peyton and the Colts.
Quarterback David Carr talked about the fine job Emmitt Smith
did on "Dancing with the Stars". Hopefully the Texans offensive line
will keep David from seeing stars when they met the Colts .

The Texans promised to make improvements in their running game
after rushing for only 70 yards for the Eagles , and it didn't take
them long to address the problem.
On Wednesday, the team acquired running back Samkon Gado
from the Green Bay Packers , for running back Vernand Morency.

The Texans were anixous to make a
fresh start under Gary Kubiak,
and on the openning drive vs the Eagles,
they got a glimpse of what the future could be .

If the Texans were nervous about Sunday's game vs
the Eagles , I saw no signs of it on Friday.
I was in the team's locker room after a brief practice
session and the muisc was loud , there was lots
of laughter , and these guys seemed really relaxed
and ready to play.

Texans rookie running back Wali Lundy got the starting
nod this week, and he'll be facing the team he grew
up idolizing the Eagles .
On friday he told me, "Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was possible."

The Texans Wednesday lockerroom session
and workout were both pretty lively today.
Even defensive end Anthony Weaver, who's starting
his 5th season in the N.F.L. said he was a little
nervous about the season opener .
