September 2009 ArchivesThe Texans were in perfect position to tie the game up...a great drive all the way down to the two...they score a touchdown...but a pass interference penalty sent the team back...Chris Brown though gets the hand off and as he goes in...he fumbles the ball and it was recovered by the Jaguars in the endzone... The play was reviewed and it looked to me like he was down before he lost the ball...but the ruling on the field could not be overturned because it was not inconclusive...ridiculous way for Brown to end the running game best contest of the season...tough break... ...The offense didn't do anything...but the defense, which has been much meligned all day makes another big play...Dunta Robinson forces the fumble and Zac Diles recovers it at the 50 yard line... They are reviewing the play, but it is obviously a fumble...I gues Jags head coach Jack Del Rio needed some time to think about how they are going to stop the Texans right here... ...The Texans defense finally stepped up, thanks in part to the holding penalty, but hey, who's counting?!? They are off the field and now the offense has 89 yard in front of them to do something. Case Keenum was able to do it against Texas Tech yesterday...why not Schaub? Texans do still have 2 timeouts left though so this is not a make or break drive... ...I feel like a broken record on this thing, but it needs to be said, the defense looks very weak today...that drive went 87 yards in 10 plays spanning 4:47...Jacksonville scored on an 8 yard run by Maurice Jones-Drew who has now totaled 3 TD's and 104 yards on 16 carries... The Texans are having probalems getting off the field on third down and they are giving up way too many rushing yards again...the holes are there...but sometimes, it has been a result of poor tackling...we know what needs work this week... ...The Texans did a nice job on the ensuing possession, taking it 74 yards on 11 plays spanning 6:08 ending on a 27 yard field goal by Kris Brown... Slaton actually got some running room and made the most of it on that drive, a couple of big runs over ten yards...they also mixed in some short pass plays...they are moving the ball well, the defense though needs to step it up... Jaguars have the ball again and they are moving... ...You would have liked to see the Texans have some intensity coming out of the locker room, but the defense looks like swiss cheese...Jaguars move all the way down the field, 83 yards in 10 plays in 4:50...Maurice Jones-Drew capped off the drive with another touchdown run from the two yard line... Fred Bennett was eaten alive on that drive...let;s see if they make any adjustments on that side of the field because right now, the Jaguars are moving up and down...no problem... ...That was an exciting first half, and honestly, probably a little too close for comfort... Jacksonville is definitely looking like a team that does not want to go 0-3, that is usually the death sentence for any NFL team...Texans though, did a nice job on countering everything that the Jaguars threw their way... At the end of the day, this game might be close now, but the Texans have more talent and it should, SHOULD, be a little further apart at the end of this one... ...Texans score again, the offense is clicking this afternoon and now that they have all their weapons, this is looking more and more like the team we expected at the beginning of the season... That scoring drive went 10 plays, 66 yards in 3:28 culminating in a 2 yard pass from Matt Schaub to Owen Daniels...Schaub has now found Jones, Walter and Daniels in the first half...great distribution of the ball... ...Well, that 14-10 lead...poof! Gone in an instant...Maurice Jones-Drew gashes the Texans again with another big play...this time it goes 61 yards for the score...it was all part of a drive that took 1:46 spanning 76 yards in 4 plays... This is becoming a very disturbing trend...the inability to stop the big play...yikes... ...Well, that 14-10 lead...poof! Gone in an instant...Maurice Jones-Drew gashes the Texans again with another big play...this time it goes 61 yards for the score...it was all part of a drive that took 1:46 spanning 76 yards in 4 plays... This is becoming a very disturbing trend...the inability to stop the big play...yikes... ...Well, that 14-10 lead...poof! Gone in an instant...Maurice Jones-Drew gashes the Texans again with another big play...this time it goes 61 yards for the score...it was all part of a drive that took 1:46 spanning 76 yards in 4 plays... This is becoming a very disturbing trend...the inability to stop the big play...yikes... ...A great answer by the Texans as we are near the midway point in the second quarter...great field position again for Houston and Schaub found Kevin Walter for the score... Like I said before, its good to see Walter back in the fold...he has 4 receptions for 60 yards already and we're not even done with the first half...Andre Johnson went off the field on that last drive, don't know what happened on that catch that he made, so Walter might be very key in today's game... Keep you posted...Texans lead 14-10 ...David Garrard finished off the touchdown drive for the Jacksonville Jaguars as they went 69 yard in 8 plays in 5:40 to take the lead 10-7... It had been ruled they had scored on the previous play, but the touchdown was called back because the receiver stepped out of bounds...that didn't much matter because you had the feeling they would punch it in...Brian Cushing got caught in between on the Garrard pump fake...good play by the veteran in dekeing the rookie... I know Jacksonville is 0-2, but they don't look like it at all...this should be close all the way... ...Not a bad first quarter for the Texans...a couple of things to take away from that... -Texans defense came up big, especially against the run, which they haven't been able to stop all season long. Second quarter has started...lets hope these trends continue... ...That is what I call efficiency...44 yards in 3 plays spanning only 1:14 culminating in a 18 yard pass from Schaub to Jacoby Jones, his second TD catch of the season... Big play of the drive came on a completion to Kevin Walter...glad to have him back for sure... ...The Texans defense came up big on that last series, nice plays by Dunta and Mario...that horrible run defense is actually looking good early on in this one...horrible punt from the Jags and the Texans have it on the Jacksonville 45... Time to take advantage of this... ...Jaguars capitalize on the turnover...Josh Scobbe knocked in a 52 yard field goal...could have been good from 60...what a leg... The scoring drive spanned 3:17, 59 yards and 8 plays...Huge play by Tim Bulman on a screen pass attempt to Jones-Drew...give credit where credit is due though, nice play calling by Jacksonville on the drive...and they did what the Texans couldn't...score on the first drive...Texans with the ball again... ...Well, so much for a good start...the Texans were moving the ball pretty well, completions to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels, but the running game was stagnant again with Steve Slaton and Schaub threw one up for grabs for Andre and Rashean Mathis picked it off at the 8 yard line of the jaguars... Texans defense needs to come up big here...Battle Red Crowd going nuts... ...Hello Texans fans...well its that time of the week again, and honestly, does it seem like its been forever since we last saw the guys hit the field? Well, I think it's anxiety to see if last week's offensive explosion against the Titans was a fluke, or a sign of things to come... But, while the offense was great, the defense left a lot to be desired. They rank last in the NFL in stopping the run and today they face one of the best in Maurice Jones-Drew... We'll see what happens, in the meantime...here are some pre-game notes... ...After a great first week for some of us, the second go-around proved to be a little more humbling. Last week saw a lot of good football, and you know, we do have to give credit where credit is due. Matt Musil proved to stay loyal to the Texans and they pulled one out for him by beating the Titans 34-31. However, I was the only one to pick the Bears over the defending champion Steelers, which was a nice surprise. Bob and George, well...they were the one's who's prognostication skills were definitely not at their best...but hey...there's always the next week...and thats all the 9 0-2 teams can hold onto these... Now that is the team that we all thought we would see this season. Texans pull off a huge upset victory in Nashville, beating the Titans 34-31. Matt Schaub goes 25-39 for 357 yards and 4 touchdowns...Andre Johnson catches two of them...Jacoby Jones one and Owen Daniels the other. And while the offense was great, it was the defense that won this game for them. They gave up only 7 points in the whole second half...thats coming up big for sure... Texans 1-1 with the possibility now of going 3-1 after four games. Jacksonville and Oakland come into Reliant now and those should be wins for sure...let's ho... I know Kerry Collins is old, but to just drop the ball like that without anybody hitting him...that was ridiculous...But the old man on the other side...Jeff Zgonina comes up big in recovering the ball....nice! ...Defense came up big and the offense did what they've been doing all day...great drive to get into field goal range and Kris Brown knocked it through...34-31 Texans...big play of the drive 44 yard pass to Jacoby Jones...then gutsy call for Kubiak to go for it on 4th and inches... I like the play calling today...they;ve haven't fallen in love with the screen pass, but they've mixed it in with the deep ball... Chris Brown has also picked up some solid yards...good stuff...time to hold on for sure... ...Wow...I know I've said it before, but this is one of the craziest games I have seen in a while...fights breaking out on the field, off the field...I don't know how these refs do it sometimes...and honestly...since when was it ok to give a standing ovation to a guy who just threw punches at the other team? I know you want him to stand-up for his teammates, but common... Texans defense needs to come up big...time to step it up like they have for most of the second half... ...Where was this offense last week?!?! This is the Texans attack that we thought we were going to see...11 plays, 65 yards in 5:55 culminating in a 1 yd touchdown pass from Scaub to Daniels...the play was made possible thanks to a pass interference penalty on the Titans... Last week...we were screaming for them to throw it up to Andre Johnson and they finally start doing it...and look what happens? The big man is close to 200 yards receiving already...nice drive for sure... ...Well, that's not how they wanted things to go on that series...Matt Turk does a nice job pinning the Titans deep and poof...Chris Johnson gets free again...this time for 91 yards...he did make some nice moves, but the Texans definitely need to work on the tackling... Guys were over pursuing up at the line...and once Johnson gets into the defensive backfield...he is gone...he is so fast... ...Well, everybody exhale, that was one of, if not the craziest first half I have ever seen...Titans tied it up with 2 seconds to go on a Rob Bironas 40 yard field goal...24-24 at the half... Here are some points from the 1st 30 minutes... ...Chester Pitts jas left the game with a right knee sprain...his return is questionable...Kasey Studdard might get some extended playing time in this one... ...Texans move the ball down the field and get the field goal...questionable play calling at the end of the drive...running the ball three straight times then lobbing it up to a running back...don't know about that, but they did get the points...Kris Brown knocks in a 38 yard field goal to give the Texans the lead... Let's see if the defense can come up with a big stop or get a turnover right before the half... ...After an Eugene Wilson interception (thank goodness he's back) the Texans took two plays to punch it in...well, really just one...Schaub finds Jones for the touchdown from 29 yards out...the play was reviewed, but it was upheld...Jones did have possession of the ball... Good thing for Jones because the play before, he dropped an easy pass... Brand new ball game folks...Texans aren't getting much pressure on Collins though, that needs to improve... ...Well that didn't take long...Texans answer right back...Johnson finds himself wide open and Schaub put it on him...72 yards for the score...that took all of 16 seconds... Does this feel like a Madden video game to anybody else? This is nuts... Texans back in it though...21-14 Titans... ...Oh boy...this looks like a long day for the Texans defense...another touchdown pass for Collins, this time to Nate Washington from eight yards out...this drive went 7 plays, 54 yards in 2:44... Last week we saw the Jets take their time moving the ball down the field...this time the Texans are getting gashed...doesn't look good... ...What in the world happened there?!?!?!? Chris Johnson lined up and like the great commentator Gus Johnson said...all but 11 people in the stadium saw he was standing there by himself...Kerry Collins finds him...of course...and Johnson run 69 yards for the easy touchdown... So much for momentum...Texans need a quick answer.... ...Texans finally get something going offensively...Schaub finds Andre Johnson for a one-handed touchdown grab in the corner of the endzone from 19 yards out. Great drive by the Texans...14 plays, 77 yards spanning 6:18... Thats a little more like it...game tied at 7... ...Well, after a bad first offensive series for the Texans, the Titans wasted no time in getting their first score. Running back Chris Johnson takes it 57 yards to the house on a draw play for the touchdown. It was a 7 play, 73 yard scoring drive that spanned 3:20... Texans didn't look good the first time they had the ball...need to get it going right here... ...Cornerback Jacques Reeves and Wide Receiver Andre Davis are out today against the Titans. It was thought that after practicing all week, Reeves would be ready to come back after the knee injury he suffered in the pre-season. I guess that wasn't the case as Kubiak scratched him before the game. Davis is still suffering the effects of a concussion he had last week against the Jets, so he will sit one more week. ...Well, week 1 of the NFL season is done and over...now its on to week numero dos. We all had faith in the Texans and like much of the city, we were all wrong on how they would turn out. Bob Luna apparently had the forsight to know that there would be divine intervention in the Broncos-Bengals game. And me, Daniel Gotera, well...let's just say my prognostication picks weren't all that great... Here are the standings.... Butch Alsandor 14-2 The Houston Astros released their 2010 season schedule this week. They open up with the San Francisco Giants at home. Their first road game is against the St. Louis Cardinals. As for interleague play, well the team will travel to Arlington, New York and Kansas City. The Astros will welcome the Tampa Bay Rays and Rangers to Minute Maid Park. In a season that the team has been out of it for a little while now, a new schedule is fun to look at it. But, is the actual play on the field something to look forward to? ...Jets run out the clock...the day started with a lot of promise and ended...with a giant thud...final score 24-7 New York...adjustments needed for sure... ...With the Texans driving...Matt Schaub was picked off at the Jets 10 yard line by Lito Sheppard...he returned it a couple of yards...the score still remains 24-7 New York... ...The momentum didn't last long...after having long drives all day...the New York Jets score quickly...ending on a 38 yard run by Thomas Jones...the drive took 2:08 off the clock and went 80 yards in 4 plays...Sanchez completed a long pass to Dustin Keller to get the Jets into Texans territory and Jones finished it off...the mass exodus from Reliant has started... ...Like they've doing all year long...the Texans defense comes up huge...Mark Sanchez was intercepted by John Busing at midfield...on the return, he fumbled it and Dominique Barber picked up and ran it in from 48 yards out for the score...it was the first career interception for Busing and first career touchdown for Barber...Texans' first fumble return for a TD since October 21, 2007...let's see if that gets them going a little bit... ...The Jets continue their tough defense against the Texans...Schaub completed a long pass to David Anderson, but other than that...nothing has been working offensively, especially the running game, which has not been able to get going all day...the boo-birds are out in full force after every incomplete pass from the "WhiteOUT" crowd...yikes... ...Texans get a first down and look like they're moving the ball well...Andre Johnson gets into the act again...but drive stalls at 5o yard line...Schaub pass to Owen Daniels is incomplete...they turn it over on downs... ...Jets get the first possession of the second half...march right down the field for another touchdown...this time the drive went 87 yards on 12 plays...and yet again, the Jets ate up a whole bunch of clock...7:25 to be exact...the drive ended on a 1-yard touchdown run by Thomas Jones...defensive kept the Texans in the game for the first half...but you can see that they might be getting tired right now...offense had 104 yds total in the first half...need to stay on the field this time... ...The Jets got the ball with under a minute to go and drove it all the way to the 20 yard line of the Texans, but time ran out...half ended on a taunting penalty by DeMeco Ryans...overall, not a good first half for Houston...Jets brought a lot of pressure and the Texans fell in love with the screen pass...Andre Johnson had one catch for 7 yds...some second half adjustments needed for sure... ...New York Jets score again, this time a 30 yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez to Chansi Stuckey...10-0 Jets...that play capped a 10 play, 78 yard drive that spanned 4:08...Brice McCain was on the coverage...looked like he expected some help over the top but it never came...Stuckey raced right by him...Sanchez found him in the endzone...wide open... ...Texans driving deep inside Jets territory, but Steve Slaton fumbles the fall after catching a screen pass from Matt Schaub...NY CB Donald Strickland forces the fumble, Mike DeVito recovers for the Jets...Texans having to go to the screen pass early because of New York pressure...Vonta Leach with a couple of receptions already...Jets have the ball again...and driving... ...End of the first quarter...Jets lead the Texans 3-0...Mark Sachez led the Jets on a 16 play, 68 yard scoring drive that took up 8:27...crazy stuff...Texans defense buckled down in the redzone though...Brian Cushing looking good for not playing any in the pre-season... ...The Texans got the ball first...started at their own 20 after a holding penalty on the return...they picked up the first down on a Chris Brown run...but were forced to punt on the next series...Jets bringing a lot of pressure early on...as expected... ...Texans fans...are you ready for some football?!?!? After a month of wondering who will be on the team, pre-season prognostications and deciding whether or not to wear your Matt Schaub or Andre Johnson jersey on game day, the Houston Texans are ready to kick off their 2009 season today against the New York Jets. Here are some notes for you fans out there before kick-off... ...Hello football fans! So starting this year we here at 11 Sports will pick every single game on the NFL schedule every single week. The season got kicked off on Thursday night with the Steelers beating the Titans 13-10. Just so you know, everyone in the sports department picked the Steelers. So here goes nothing. Butch, Matt, Daniel and photographers Bob Luna and George Jensen have made their selections...let us know what you think! ...So, I am usually not a fan of watching Hall of Fame inductions, for any sport. I guess baseball is fun because of the classic names that everyone recognizes. The NFL is cool mainly because of all the festivities surrounding the event, including the opening game of the pre-season. But, when it comes to watching them, well, there is much there. However, this year's NBA Hall of Fame induction should be on the list of events to watch for every sports fan mainly because it could possibly be the best class the sport has ever witnessed. ... |
