Cy Fair, back to back State Championships?

Comparing this edition of the Lady Bobcats to last year's state championship squad is like comparing the "Jonas Brothers" to the "Gatlin Brothers". They are both very good, but will the Jonas boys be around as long as the Gatlin's.
Its a question people are asking about this year's Cy Fair team. Will they be able to stick around long enough this weekend to win their second straight 5-A State Title?

Not even their hairstylist knows for sure, but its been a fun ride.
In the interest of full disclosure I feel compelled to tell you head coach Ann Roubique and I went to the same college,at the same time. She was a great athlete then, and is proving she's become an outstanding coach.

Three straight trips to the state tournament is incredible. But this time she really doesn't know what to expect. Roubique said, "We lost 8 seniors from last year's team and with all the attention these girls are getting for the first time I just don't know how they will react." "They are 16 years old, so I just don't know how they will respond."

The Lady Bobcats face Mansfield Summit tomorrow afternoon with a berth in the finals hanging in the balance. Cy Fair enters the game with an impressive 35-3, but this team doesn't really have a lot in common with last year's squad.
First of all the 2007-2008 squad was extremely tall, while the only height in this group belongs to 6'0 Chiney Ogwumike. But they are a physical team. Its something they work on in practice by scrimmaging against boys who
are bigger and stronger. The sessions have given the girls an edge. You just don't see this team getting pushed around.
Senior Harriet Lakind is starting for the first time. This year she's taken on a leadership role and relishes the fact that Cy Fair has been flying under the adar.
"The less attention we get the better, we don't want people to blow us up and then we go out and lose." "We will keep out focus , its just about us and what we do it doesn't matter what they think".

Last season Chiney and sister Nneka were twin towers underneath, but the younger Ogwumike is adjusing to life without big sis who's now playing at Stanford. She said, "Its bitter sweet I'm sad that she left but I'm glad to be here by myself proving what I can do. What she did was score 37 points and yank down 24 rebounds in the win that put the Lady Bobcats in the final 4. But she is keeping it all in perspective, "I don't feel like I have to be more aggressive I just need to stay in my own element, I don't want to go crazy and take on the whole load by myself because its a team effort." A team effort is what it will take to bring home a second consective state title.
