March 2009 ArchivesThe season opener ...ends in a tie .....not what the Dynamo wanted ......but considering they were without Kamara up front ...it could have been worse. The killer is ....the Dynamo led 1-0 ..and it looked like they would win ...but it wasn't meant to be. Wondolowski was fouled outside the box .....Brad Davis lines up to take the kick ...with Stuart Holden the right footed option. It's deflected over the goal ...corner kick coming ...from the far side. Davis will take it with the left foot. Schelotto ties it up in the 83rd minute. Garey with the assist ...and Schelotto kicks it into the back of the net. We're in the 85th minute. wow ...what an effort ....But GK William Hesmer knocks it away with his hands. We've entered the final 10 minutes of regulation now ...and the Dynamo still leads 1-0. ...Wondo ...just missed in the 77th minute. Wondo was about 20 yards out ..... Rico is on the sideline ..as the Dynamo play one man down at present. Trainer Theron Enns is tring to get it stopped now ....they also had to change his jersey ...due to having blood on it. In the 75th minute .....Dynamo still leading 1-0. Barrett ....I think ..has played better tonight. He was under fire ...after the team's poor defensive showing in Cancun versus Club Atlante'. The captain ...looks to be back on his game tonight. The Crew had a pair of free kick opportunities but the tough Dynamo defense held them off. The question at this point ......is one goal going to be enough??? It's still 1-0 Dynamo in the 64th minute, Chris Wondolowski is a backup forward ....and he's only playing tonight because Kamara is out due to a red card suspension .... still Chris is such a professional. He's always prepared ..and he's always ready to do whatever the team needs him to do. Chris Wondolowski ....passes ahead to Brian Ching ...who kicks it into the back o f the net in the 53rd minute. Great play by Wondo!! Ching was open with the ball inside the 22 foot box ....and made a drop off pass ...but it was stolen away ..and the threat was turned away by the Crew. Columbus continues to put the pressure on. Columbus will have first touch as the second half begins. Scoreless at the half ......only 1 minute of stoppage time. Eddie Gaven's shot on goal ....is knocked away by Pat Onstad ....great save by Pat in the 39th minute. Wow ...a flurry of kicks ...... then in the 34th ...minute ....former Dynamo standout ...Moreno ...is open in front of the net ...but he can't control the pass ...and harmlessly kicks it wide of the net. In the 36th minute .... Columbus has a corner kick .....it's headed away ....but man ..the guys in orange ... need to find a spurt of energy to get this thing turned around. This is... Robbie Rogers had a clear shot on goal ...but it was from about 30 yards out ..and Pat Onstad easily gathered it in. Remember Kei Kamara ...one of the Dynamo's starting forwards ... is out for the first two matches of the MLS season .....for a red card he received in a pre-season match with San Jose. Chris Wondolowski is starting up front tonight with Brian Ching. Columbus' big star ....and the reigning MLS MVP ....Guillermo Schelotto was shaken up a few minutes ago ....when a ball off the foot of Mulrooney hit him right in the face ....he sta... A crossing pass by Brian Mullen was a little high for Brad Davis ...in the 14th minute ..and the Dynamo missed on a pretty good scoring chance. In the 17th minute ...the Dynamo again had a great scoring chance ....but the crossing pass by Richard Mulrooney ..although just a little high .....was headed over the goal by Chris Wondolowski.... The Dynamo is dressed out in their orange jerseys and white shorts ....but this year's uniforms have some more light blue on them ....the left sleeve on the jersey is almost all robin's egg blue. Columbus is dressed in all black jerseys and shorts ...with yellow trim ..and white numerals on their jerseys. The Dynamo has had the upperhand in the early going. There's no score .....14 minutes into the first half. I don't know if Carl Landry has any Irish in his family lineage .....but the 25 year old backup forward for the Rockets ....seemed to have some Irish luck on his side early Tuesday morning. ...I don't know if you remember the young man from Jersey Village High School who suffered the spinal chord injury this past football season or not .... but he's still suffering ...even though he's out of the spotlight. ...The Rockets are hosting the Lakers tonight riding a 12 game homecourt winning streak. Whether it becomes 13 or not might depend on how well they control one Kobe Bryant. According to Artest, "Half the battle has to do with the names Battier and me." "Battier loves to play defense, its something he takes pride in stopping his man and that's half the battle right there and its the same for me its a great tandem."
The Stafford HS Spartans are headed to start with heavy hearts. Not because they're playing top-seeded Dallas-Madison in the opening game ....but because one of their most popular players ... While no one wants to panic, we're not exactly seeing the kind of spring we would like out of the Astros. Admittedly, with the World Baseball Classic, players like Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt and LaTroy Hawkins are not with the club, but have you noticed their record lately? 1-8, ouch. Spring games don't mean didly, still 16-0 wipeouts don't do anything for confidence. What's worse, It's not just the pitching that's bad, the hitting isn't too hot either. We all are hearing the right things, "I was working on a pitch," "I felt good," "I was spotting the ball well." If there's one thing that tir... Comparing this edition of the Lady Bobcats to last year's state championship squad is like comparing the "Jonas Brothers" to the "Gatlin Brothers". They are both very good, but will the Jonas boys be around as long as the Gatlin's. Not even their hairstylist knows for sure, but its been a fun ride. With the Dynamo losing this quarterfinal series with Atlante' ....they now won't be distracted heading into the MLS regular season. How's that for a positive spin?? The Dynamo just didn't look sharp in the 2nd half ..and by the time Geoff Cameron and Corey Ashe were inserted into the lineup ....to quicken the pace ...it was too late. The Dynamo had more chances with those two in the lineup ....but stil couldn't convert their opportunities. Defender Bobby Boswell ..out with flu-like symptoms .... was really missed. Now here... Free kick coming just outside the Atlante' box .....They have turned the clock off in the stadium ...so I don't know for sure how much time is left....but it's definately less than 10 minutes. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead ...Atlante' is just dropping back on defense ....and trying to hold the Dynamo off. Ricardo Clark missed the header off the corner kick by Richard Mulrooney. We're in the 57th minute ..and the Dynamo need to find "lightning in a bottle." James card is the 3rd yellow card the Dynamo has received tonight. Dominic Kinnear pulled Craig Waibel and Wade Barrett from the defense ...and inserted Geoff Cameron and Corey Ashe. The Dynamo trail at the half ...2-nil ...to Atlante' ...Rafeil Lugo victimized Craig Waibel in the middle of the defense ....and Lugo Scores!! Kei Kamara centered the ball in front of the net to Stuart Holden ...but Stu's header went high over the goalkeeper. 19 year old Fernando Navarro just scored on a chip shot past Onstad ...off a long pass upfield. Navarro's goal in the 22nd minute ...puts the Dynamo down 1 - 0 ... but also puts a lot of pressure on them. Remember a tie loses the series ... they need at least 2 goals now. ...no matter what Atlante' does. This is the first of the night ....taken from the near side ...right side ....by Brad Davis ....this is what the Atlante' team fears the most ...these set plays by the Dynamo. Corner kick goes wide of the far post ....the same way Atlante' set up their goal scoring set in game one of this series ....but the strategy was foiled as Craig Waibel kicked the ball out of bounds. Miguel Angel Martinez was yellow carded near midfield ...following that free kick the Dynamo actually had their first chance. Brian Mullan centered the ball .....but the pass went awry...and the ball went wide left. Brian Ching got knocked down moments ago ...and no foul was called ....so Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear has come away from the bench area to stand along the sideline ..and voice his displeasure. Atlante' threatened again ....after Craig Waibel stumbled and crossing shot was centered ...but the Atlante' player missed a header high over the goal. The Potros have put the pressure on the Dynamo defense early .....but the guys in orange and whilte are trying to get on track. They haven't threatened in the opening 5 minutes. We're underway ...and already Atlante' had a corner kick ...that Pat Onstad ..the Dynamo goalkeeper easily handled.
Atlante' dressed in red jerseys with dark blue stripes ...and dark blue shorts ...and long blue socks ... The Dynamo are a few minutes away from beginning their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match with host Atlante' of Cancun. If the Dynamo beat Atlante' in Cancun Tuesday night it would be big deal. No MLS team has ever beaten a Mexican team on it's home turf. But if the Dynamo would have signed popular Mexican star Omar Bravo .....it could have been an even bigger deal. ...People come to Cancun for a variety of reasons ....but for the Houston Dynamo ... it's a business trip. The Dynamo team is trying to become the first MLS club to ever win a match in Mexico. ... |
