When will the "steroids era" end?

Carleton Cole

News item: A lawyer who represented Roger Clemens last
year when he denied under oath that he used performance enhancing
drugs has been chosen to lead the Justice Department lawyers now
investigating the retired pitching great. President Barack Obama announced Thursday that Lanny Breuer, an accomplished lawyer in private practice, was his choice to run the department's criminal division.

Isn't it time for the Justice Department to drop its investigation into whether or not Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he testified last year. The hearing was political grandstanding then, and now a y...

Strake Jesuit scoring on the hardwood and in the classroom

5:29 PM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |
Butch Alsandor

Every time I go to Strake Jesuit, I'm reminded of the 12 years I spent in Catholic School. The uniforms, the discipline, the quality education. I even have memories of Sister John Bosco and her pal "Mr. Ruler." "Ouch !" But I also remember the commitment in the classroom bleeding over to the athletic field. The same thing is happening at Strake Jesuit. The basketball team is now ranked no. 1 in Texas after rolling to a perfect 24-and 0 record. Last season the Crusaders won their district, but were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round.

The Rockets will host arch-rival Utah Wednesday night ... but before practice today .... most of them watched Barack Obama's inauguration .. and clearly those who did were moved by the occasion.

Promote hockey, not fighting

8:37 PM Fri, Jan 16, 2009 |
Carleton Cole

As a minor league team the Houston Aeros don't get much television exposure. First professional hockey is a tough sell in the Southwest, but perhaps most importantly it is a minor league. So with some degree of curiosity, I watched a little of their recently televised game against the Toronto Marlies. But no sooner did I turn the game on than I was reminded why the game is even a tougher sell. Within minutes, there was fight.

As it turned out it was more like a dance, but what was more of a concern were the remarks from one of the announcers. "You can't be a hockey fan unless you like to watch a fight....

Senator Mutombo?

5:18 PM Fri, Jan 16, 2009 |
Butch Alsandor

After 17 seasons in the N.B.A., Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo is the elder statesman of the league. But he also knows his way around the political landscape in Washington. Because of his fund raising efforts with his Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, the 7 foot 2 center is used to rubbing shoulders with Washington's elite. But everytime I call him a politician, he gives me the finger shake and says,
"no, no, no."
Mutombo told me, "I'm not in politics i just know everyone in politics." "i think i'm sort of like an i'm activist, a freedom fighter, a lobbyist but never a politician." O.K., a rose by ...

Do we really need to see an injuried T-Mac on the bench?

1:35 PM Wed, Jan 14, 2009 |
Butch Alsandor

Man, I really love to listen to talk radio. I don't care if its Rush Limbaugh, Jim Rome, Air America, whatever. Say what you will about the quality of the callers and their silly trade proposals, it does provoke a discussion.
Which brings us to the chatter I heard this morning on one of the local sports talk shows. They were asking callers if Tracy McGrady should have been on
the bench during last night's Lakers game eventhough he was injuried. A lot of the topics on these shows are picked to generate a reaction. Right now everytime McGrady's name is mentioned it brings on a reaction. Its usu...

If you get a chance ....I urge you to look for the story we did on Aldine-Nimitz H.S. center Brittney Griner ..elsewhere here on khou.com. She's 6-8 ... moves like she's closer to 5-8....and she's a team oriented player.
