News item: Houston is ranked as the 12th best "Sports City" by The Sporting News. Please the best we can do is 12th?
Let's look at the numbers. Boston remains on top, but Detroit second ? C'mon.

For years The Sporting News was referred to as the authority on baseball, but those days are gone. With the advent of the internet and all the other media, TSN is not the publication it once was, and in its attempt to foster some sort of "controversy" it posts this list. The release tells me this is the 15th year it has had its rankings.

No question Boston is a great sports, town, but in reality the rating should go for all of New England. The Patriots play in a town, Foxborough, half way between Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. Boston is number 1, Providence 156, so Boston gets credit for the Patriots, but Providence doesn't.

The problem with national rankings like this has more to do with regional tastes. NHL hockey is not played in Houston, which Detroit has, but the last time I checked Detroit doesn't have an MLS Soccer team which Houston has in the Dynamo. I also know they like to race snow mobiles in Michigan, which is hard to do in Texas. Baytown has a drag strip called "Houston Raceway Park" which is worth more?

Then there's the whole situation with New York. We call them the New York Giants, and the New York Jets, but in reality, the teams play in New Jersey. I didn't see a spot on the list for East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Giants football stadium is situated, yet smaller towns like Appleton, Wisconsin and Bluefield, West Virginia are on this list. So which cities count with whom?

The point of all of this is to get people talking, or even better for them buy the magazine. Does it mean anything? absolutely not. Here's a better question, Who has the best sports fans?" I am talking about those who sold out Sunday's Texans game and stayed to watch the entire meltdown. There are plenty of them here in Houston, and yes it's a great Sports City.
