Former U.H. star shining with Rams

Growing up in Houston, Donnie Avery was never the biggest guy playing pickup football games but he was always the fastest. Now the 5'11, 184 pounder is putting his 4.2 40 yard dash speed to good use with the St. Louis Rams. Recently, the Rams have been in transition with Jim Haslett replacing Scott Linehan as head coach. So far the move has been great for the team and for Avery.

Last week, in an upset win over the Cowboys, Avery caught 4 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. It was his best showing of the season, since the Rams made him the first receiver selected in the 2008 draft.
But the Houston native wasn't really on the N.F.L. map until his senior season at the University of Houston.
He lead Conference USA averaging 112 yards a game and ranked 14th nationally among division 1 receivers. He was a home run hitter for the Coogs, the ultimate deep threat with soft hands and great speed. Those were the same skills that served him so well at Alief Hastings High School, where he was an All-District receiver. Now the Rams are looking for big things from Avery hoping his performance against "The Boys" was a sign of things to come.
