Spiked By Ike

Matt Musil

Galveston is in shambles. I had seen video on newscasts and pictures in newspapers .... but the devastation of our beloved island neighbor is shocking to see in person. I was out on the island preparing to take a ride on a Coast Guard Cutter .... when I ran across the wreckage...and debris which seems to be everywhere.

4:54 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

Titans quarterback Vince Young will not go the way of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady .... at least for now. Here's the latest on Titans' quarterback .....Vince Young.

His agent, Major Adams, told me at 4:55pm Houston time .... that after Young;s MRI .... the doctors assured him,"It's not his ACL. He may have a tear in his MCL or maybe it's just a sprain .... they're still reading it at this point."

Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said yesterday if it's an MCL problem .... Young could be out a few weeks. Right now though .... the doctors are still going over the MRI itself .... and once they know th...

Judgment Calls

7:28 PM Mon, Sep 08, 2008 |
Carleton Cole

Folks in the Pac 10 are circling the wagons. In one of the worst calls in college football, a penalty for excessive celebration cost Washington the gimme chance to tie the game against BYU.
It's a play that's been all over the highlight reels, Huskies quarterback Jake Locker scrambling to the end zone and scoring what was thought to be a touchdown to tie the game. But in his zest he threw the ball up in the air drawing a yellow flag.
"Every call is a judgment call," says Pac-10 coordinator of football officiating Dave Cutaia "(The official) saw the ball thrown very high in the air and made the call. ...

So the Texans aren't as good as many expected them to be?? Really?? How many people actually believed they would beat the Steelers?? The Steelers are one of the best teams in the AFC ...and Texans Coach Gary Kubiak new his guys would have to play nearly a perfect game .......but of course .... they didn't.

Major League Baseball scorers

Carleton Cole

This week's official scoring abomination costing pitcher C.C. Sabathia a no hitter just adds to the examples showing why umpires should be the official scorers. It is not a new idea, but that still doesn't mean it shouldn't be reconsidered.

In years past we heard from the umps how physically demanding their jobs are. They are out on the field all nine innings, and in the summer time that can be brutal. So instead of a four man crew, let's make it five.
The rotation would include a game upstairs in the press box making the official scoring calls.

In this case the official scorer Bob Webb ...

Matt Musil

The greatest player to ever wear a Houston Rockets uniform .. Hakeem Olajuwon ... will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame Friday night. "I never thought about making it into a Hall of Fame or something while I was playing ...I was just playing .. trying to be the best I could be."

Life imitates art for Jacoby Jones

5:38 PM Wed, Sep 03, 2008 |
Michelle Homer

Sometimes life really does imitate art. Take the case of Texans receiver Jacoby Jones.
After he fumbled the ball during a preseason game vs the Saints, Jones started a love affair with the football.

Actually, the credit has to go to Texans Special Teams Coach Joe Marciano. "Joe gave me the ball and said you need to start walking around with this ball, and I said you guys are treating me like Darnell Jefferson," Jones said.

Baylor needs a new conference

2:47 PM Mon, Sep 01, 2008 |
Carleton Cole

The generation which is in college now grew up with "Sesame Street" and "Barney." So the students are all familiar with of one of the staples of "Big Bird's" jingles. "Three of these things belong together, but one of those things doesn't." The game teaches similarities and differences to the younger crowd. So why then can't college football get it right?

The Big 12 Conference is made up of 11 publicly funded schools. One is not, and it's high time for that school to pull up its stakes and join a conference of similar institutions.
Ever since the Big 12 was created Baylor University has been the d...
