Thinking Houston Area Sports While at Minute Maid

First off ...isn't it great to live in Houston??
Air-conditioned baseball when we need it.....is a very good thing.
Anyway ....as I watch the Astros bludgeon the visiting Cardinals ...I'm optimistic about the 2009 season ...if Ed Wade can find strengthen the pitching rotation significantly. The Astros are hitting and scoring runs ....even without Carlos Lee. 37,569 fans are here .... despite the fact that the Astros probably have no chance of contending. The fans appreciate the effort these guys are giving. Between Ty Wigginton and Geoff Blum ... who is surprising you more with his homerun stroke??

The Texans have placed injury-plagued running back Chris Brown on the injured reserve list. Man .... this guy has had trouble staying on the field from the first day of training camp. If you'll remember back ....he missed that first day due to "his attendance of his brother's wedding." Yes, he was fined ...but head coach Gary Kubiak has always been in Brown's corner. He believes the big running back out of Colorado can help this football team. I'd like to see it ....but I don't know if it'll ever happen. Right now it looks like the Texans just threw another $800,000 away (that was his signing bonus) ...along with the $1 million they threw away on former Patriots defensive end Rosevelt Colvin. Like someone once said, "Hey a million here and a million there ...and pretty soon you're going to be talking about real money." Rick Smith and Kubiak just hope their big "multi-million dollar gamble" ....Ahman Green pays off. Thus far he has not. We'll know more after the season opener in Pittsburgh. I still believe in Smith and Kubiak. I believe they can get the Texans to the promised land ...... but personnel matters are always hit or miss. They just need more "hits" than "misses" ...something former GM Charley Casaly couldn't seem to do.

After a shaky start last night .... the Rice Owls football season got off to a roaring start. Nice win over June Jones' SMU team. Chase Clement and Jarrett Dillard should re-write the record books this season if they can stay healthy ...and last night ... the Owls showed they could play some defense also. If they can get the defensive side of the ball shored up .....they should contend for the CUSA West title....and may be able to play East Carolina in the title game. I pick them to go 8 & 4 and make a bowl game. East Carolina looks like the team to beat in the CUSA east ...after a nice win over Virginia Tech earlier today.

As I am writing this ....UH is scoreless early against Southern ....but over at Reliant Stadium .... Prairie View is all over Texas Southern early. Dynamo hosts Blanco and the Chicago Fire tomorrow night.

I feel for all the people who live east of here who are fleeing the oncoming hurricane. I-10 Westbound ...near downtown was bumper to bumper around 6pm ..... when I came over to Minute Maid for the game. It sure feels good to be a Houstonian!!
