Thinking Houston Area Sports While at Minute Maid

7:49 PM Sat, Aug 30, 2008 |
Matt Musil

First off ...isn't it great to live in Houston??
Air-conditioned baseball when we need it.....is a very good thing.
Anyway ....as I watch the Astros bludgeon the visiting Cardinals ...I'm optimistic about the 2009 season ...if Ed Wade can find strengthen the pitching rotation significantly. The Astros are hitting and scoring runs ....even without Carlos Lee. 37,569 fans are here .... despite the fact that the Astros probably have no chance of contending. The fans appreciate the effort these guys are giving. Between Ty Wigginton and Geoff Blum ... who is surprising you more with his homerun stroke?? >> Continue reading: Thinking Houston Area Sports While at Minute Maid

That's It ...It's Over Mercifully!!

9:57 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Final pre-season game lost by Texans to Bucs 16 to 6. The Texans go 2 & 2 on the pre-season. I thought Petey Faggins had a standout game for the Texans on defense ....and Tim Bulman ...defensive lineman looked good.
Kris Brown is in mid-season form ...and punter Matt Turk looks ready to go. Also Anthony Maddox made some plays at the defensive line spot. Other than that ....there was some really bad football. I'm headed to the lockeroom ...and I'll have more on the Texans and all their cuts ...tomorrow on 11 News at 6 and 10 . See you then.

...

Bucs Run One Play ..and ....

9:53 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Texans call timeout .... it's 2nd and 9 at the Texans 20.
Here we go ....2nd down run ...nets maybe half a yard.
3rd and 8 with the clock stopped again by Texans with 1:50 remaining.
3rd down run ... close to first down .....it'll be short
4th and 2 for Bucs ....they'll attempt to nail the Texans coffin shut with a Matt Bryant field goal ...and he makes it to make it 16-3 Bucs. 1:01 left in 4th. Neither team has scored an offensive touchdown.

...

two Minute Warning....

9:51 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |

...

Texans Force Turnover ....but can't move it...

9:46 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Bucs back on offense ....and they could run the clock out with a first down or maybe two.
2:40 left in the game ...with the clock rolling.
I'm sure Kubiak will not stop it.

...

First Offensive Turnover Of The Pre-Season ....

9:41 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Brink gets intercepted ....by Bucs ...and TB back in business .....in Texans territory.

Texans Couldn't Move It ...Punt it away...

9:33 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Bucs have the ball lback on their own 29 yard line .....Texans trail 13 to 6.
Holding Bucs ....negates a nice run ....first and 20 at their own 19 yard line.
3rd down now and 20 ..... pass complete ..... but receiver tackled by Tim Bulman

...

bucs Up the Lead ....

9:21 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |

...

End of 3rd quarter.....

9:14 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

here we go ...mercifully ...we've reached the 4th quarter....
Bucs complete a long pass downfield ....and they have a legitimate chance to up their lead.
Announced paid attendance is 70,011 ....there may be 30,000 in the building ... but maybe closer to 20-25,000. Fans aren't stupid ....why get out in the traffic ....the heat and the high gas prices to watch backups ....??? I can't blame them.

...

Bucs have the ball ...and a timeout ...

9:10 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

1:24 left in the 3rd ....and TB leads 7-6. yawn!!

...

Shipp Picks Up 4 Yards for Texans

9:03 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

I personally like the way Shipp runs the ball ...better than Darius Walker.
I would keep Shipp over Darius. Darius is a funny, funny guy and does web reports ....Wednesday's with Walker or something like that on the team website ...but Shipp just looks like a tougher football player.

...

Buc Injured

8:55 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Sabby Piscitelli was shaken up o the play ....but now he's walking off under his own power ...but limping. 5:05 left in 3rd qtr ....Texans trail 7 to 6.

...

Simms Eludes Tacklers ...and Makes Play

8:50 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Bucs get the first down ...on the great effort pass by Simms to his receiver and they pick up 12 yards.
Okay ....defensive lineman Tim Bulman ...should make this team. Whenever he's been in this pre-season he's made plays. I think Petey Faggins also won a job on this team tonight.

...

Texans Can't Take Advantage Of Turnover

8:49 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Turk punts it away ...and Bucs back on offense.
They go for it on 3rd down ..and get it.
Simms still in at quarterback.

...

Maddox Follows It Up With An Interception!!!

8:40 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Maddox is one of many guys fighting hard trying to make this ballclub.
Over 20 players have to be trimmed before next weekend's regular season opener at Pittsburgh. And Maddox is doing everything he can to attract the attention of the coaches ...in a positive way. 1 sack ..and 1 interception...not bad.
Texans still trail the Bucs 7-6 with 11:27 to go in the 3rd qtr.

...

Texans Get A Sack

8:39 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Anthony Maddox just did something that is rare for a defensive lineman for Texans.
He recorded a sack. No kidding ...he sacked Chris Simms.

...

Break Out The Caffeine!!

8:14 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

The caffeine is flowing in the press box ......'cause this contest ....or is this a scrimmage?? ....this thing is a big SNOOZER........
The smell of fresh perked coffee is wafting through the press box ......
Oh ...the game ...okay ....Texans ball at their own 22. The leading Texans receiver so far is Jones.

...

2 minute warning for the first half

8:12 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Texans trail 7 to 3 ...the most impressive Texan so far ....I believe .... is cornerback DeMarcus Faggins.

...

Bucs Back On Offense

8:09 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

The guys in the pewter colored pants ....yes thats's the color ....hvae the ball.
Chris Simms with a nice play fake ....but Petey Faggins again makes the play defensively .....knocking the ball loose.

...

Muscleman Referee Ed Hochuli just called timeout .....

8:06 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

It gave him plenty of time to flex his might!!

...

I'll Be Darned ....Missed it By ......that much.......

Matt Musil

Simms gets the first offensive drive going for the Bucs .....then it stalled .....Matt Bryant their kicker booted a field goal attempt that missed and we remain TB 7 ...HOU 3:

...

Simms Always Looked So Impressive In Practice but .......

7:58 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Just has never shown that he could be a huge success at the possession either in college or the NFL.....in my opinion. Let me just say ....veteran DeMarcus Faggins .... one of the few remaining original Texans is playing a good game tonight.

...

Chris Simms In At QB

7:55 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

The Bucs are going with Major Applewhite's UT nemesis on this series.
3rd and 3 on the Texans 44 ........Simms passes to the left side and completes it to Ben Troupe ..the tight end. 1st down Bucs.

...

Bucs Get The Ball Back ....

7:47 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |

...

Wow ...Bucs Find Lightening In A Bottle .....

7:44 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Tampa Bay return man ......Dexter Jackson just woke everyone up with an 83 yard punt return to give the Bucs their first lead. 7-3 Tampa Bay with 13:49 left in the first half.

...

Uh Oh ...Jacoby ....

7:40 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

2nd year player Jacoby Jones lost the handle on another catch. This time though it was ruled incomplete and the Texans got a break.
That's the end of the first quarter ..... Texans 3 .... Bucs 0.

...

Bucs Go For It on 4th down ....

7:37 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

But Tim Bulman was the man who stopped the play for no gain. so instead of being first and ten inside the Texans 30 ....the Texans now will take over.

...

Colvin Again ...Makes the play

7:35 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

He's playing against backups ....but Colvin ....the former Patriot is looking very active tonight. Already he has pressured the quarterback ...and two plays ago ...he knocked down a pass as he came through the line.

...

Hold It ...There's Been A Rosevelt Colvin Sighting

Texans lead ....3-0 with 5:13 left in first quarter.

...

What a differense from last Friday night!!

7:26 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Last Friday night in Irving, Texas .....the atmosphere was nearly as energy-charged as a regular season game. Tonight's game in contrast .... is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

...

Bucs Try to Counter ....

7:24 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Tampa Bay's Matt Bryant tries to tie the score on the Bucs first possession .... but Bryant was just short on a 54 yarder. Score stays the same 3-0 Texans.

...

Should Referees Be Tested For Steroids??

7:21 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

That's the question ... many NFL fans might ponder again this season .....as referee Ed "Did you get your tickets to the gun show?" Hochuli takes to the field.

Hochuli is the man in charge of the officiating crew at tonight's snoozer ....er I mean pre-season game. I wonder if Hochuli is hacked off that he has to waste his time on this "backwater" contest ....where he's unable to show off his "guns" to a national audience.

...

Texans Defense On The Field with .....

7:17 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |

Check That ....Mike Brisiel Is In The Game....

7:12 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

The Texans do have one starter playing ....the offensive guard on the right side ....Brisiel got the start. I really expected to see first round pick Duane Brown .....but he's not in the game. In his stead .. Rashad Butler started at left tackle.

...

Another Pre-Season Partial Sellout....

7:09 PM Thu, Aug 28, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Wow ...I've seen small crowds here but this looks like a Rice/Louisiana Tech game from a few years ago. Neither team has a regular "starter" in the game. Kris Brown is the only one scheduled to play ...along with punter Matt Turk.

...

As I just reported on 11 News at 6 ....Tampa Bay has already announced the Bucs will not play any of their regulars. The Texans still haven't announced who they'll start. But expect the starters who do play ...not to be in there very long.
We're about to get underway!!

The evaluation at the hospital revealed a fracture of the C-3 vertebra and a significant ligamentous injury to the neck. This injury wil...

Blogging over for the night ..... Cowboys fans booing ....because they wanted pass interference ..... Dallas leads 20 to 16 with 5:26 to go in the 4th. It'll take something special for the Texans to come back and win this game. If they would ...they would go 3 & 0 for the first time ever in a pre-season.
I'll see you on 11 News at ten ...with a live report and postgame comments with a key player.

Matt Musil

Darius Walker on the carry ..and converting on a third down play ...Texans first and ten at their own 22 yard line. Sage Rosenfels is in ...Schaub is done for the night. Schaub completed 15 of 27 for 166 yards..and one touchdown ....no interceptions. Not a bad line ...but I just thought that with the added pass rush tonight from Dallas ...he was just a little off on multiple throws. But that's what pressure defense does to quarterbacks. ....too bad the Texans can't that part of their defensive game going.

...

Texans Held to field goal ....

9:18 PM Fri, Aug 22, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Kris Brown kicks a 29 yard field goal ...and the Texans have cut the lead to 20 to 16.

He's as fast as a Lightning "Bolt", but can he catch

6:50 PM Thu, Aug 21, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has already proved to the world he's the fastest human on the planet. His performance winning gold in both 100 and 200 meters, while setting new world records was simply sensational.
If he wanted to run for Prime Minister in his country, he's a lock. But could he run routes and catch a football? It was a question I posed to Texans General Manager Rick Smith.

"First of all, I think he's working on a pretty good career in track and field," Smith said. "Anytime you have an athlete with exceptional speed, its attractive to you." "But the thing is , you don't kn...

Miguel Tejada has been hitting over .300 since the All-Star break ..and he just singled to right field to start the bottom of the 8th. I spoke with Miguel yesterday ..and I told him that when I see him hitting solid liners to right field I know he's "on the ball" when he's swinging ...and he said,"Yeh you're right. I haven't really changed anything ....it's just that during a long season ....you can't be red-hot all of the time. Now I am." I guess so.
Now the Giants are going with the other lefty out of the bullpen .... Alex Hinshaw.
Nobody out ...and Tejada on 1st ....Lance Berkman is coming to th...

Giants 8th Inning

3:27 PM Thu, Aug 14, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Score Tied at 4-4.
Fred Lewis leads off for the Giants ....and grounds out to Miguel Tejada at SS. One out.
Pablo Sandoval bats second and pops out to Hunter Pence in RF. (2 out)
Travis Ishikawa bats third and the left-handed hitter walks against lefty reliever Wesley Wright. So with one on ....and two out ...... the 3rd baseman Ryan Rohlinger comes up. That also brings Astros manager Cecil Cooper to the mound ...and he'll send Wright to the showers. Coop has a quicker hook nowadays ...the Astros are playing more competitive baseball. Certainly the bullpen has been fatigued at times .........

The Astros still trail 4 to 3 ...but David Newhan keeps his big day going ...by leading off the 7th with a single.

Mark Loretta was just stymied though ...as his jug-handle liner to left was snared by Giants shortstop Ivan Ochoa. There are 2 out for the Astros .... Newhan is on 3rd ... and the Giants are changing pitcher. The new pitcher is Jack Taschner. He replaces starter Kevi Correia. Astros trail 4 to 3.

...

Hello .... Newhan!

2:56 PM Thu, Aug 14, 2008 |
Matt Musil

No he doesn't look anything like that character off the old Seinfeld TV show ... but just like that annoying fat guy ..... Newhan ...David that is, just keeps popping up and contributing to the Astros cause .... just when you've forgotten about him.

With the other utility guys on this team (Mark Loretta, Geoff Blum, Ty Wigginton & Darren Erstad) contributing so heavily to the Astros team this season ...... it's easy to forget about seldom used Newhan.

The Colorado State Gang

3:53 PM Thu, Aug 07, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

When Gary Kubiak left the Broncos to become Head Coach of the Texans, it opened up a pipeline from Denver to Houston bringing in players, coaches, and front office personnel. It wasn't long before Rick Smith followed becoming the General Manager. After that the floodgates opened for a host of their former players.
At one point, the migration flowed so freely, the Texans unoffical nickname was "Denver South".

But right now the Team has more of a Ft. Collins flavor to it. The Texans have 5 players from Colorado State on the roster, as they prepare to face the Broncos in their preseason opener on...

Batman in cleats?

2:03 PM Wed, Aug 06, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

Recently I caught up with Texans running back Ahman Green after practice. For some reason our conversation shifted from football to the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight". As it turns out, Green is a huge Batman fan.
"It started when I was about 12, actually before that , because I was already watching the tv series with Adam West starring as Batman," Green said. When it comes to the "Caped Crusader", Green has already analyzed everything about Batman.

He's seen all the movies and read most of the comics. According to Green, "He's the only super hero out there who doesn't have any radioact...

Storm fizzles, Texans sizzle

1:54 PM Wed, Aug 06, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

The Texans pushed both of their workouts to the late afternoon to avoid Tropical Storm Edouard. Thankfully the storm didn't pack a punch, but the Texans practiced with a lot of intensity. The goaline sessions were really lively.
But Tuesday's practice was geared more to preparing for Saturday's preseason opener vs the Bronocos. Coach Kubiak use a radio to relay the plays to the quarterbacks, simulating what they do in the games.

They also did a lot of work on special teams, paying a lot of attention to returning punts.
Meanwhile, don't expect to see wide out Andre Johnson on the field Satur...
