No one talked about doing it "My Way better than Francis Albert Sinatra.
Actually he sang about it. Drayton McLane let Craig Biggio do it his way, at some cost to the Astros. Retirement is a tricky thing. But in sports there are some athletes who have earned the right to go out on their own terms.
Brett Farve is one of those athletes. The only problem is, the Packers thought
that's what he was doing when he walked away from the team and the game 8
months ago.
Now Farve is having second thoughts, or is he. First he asked the Packers for
his release, then his agent says, " they have no definite plans to ask for reinstatement." There is no way Green Bay would release Farve to sign
with the team of his choice. Just picture Brett standing behind center with a
Vikings helmet on, handing the ball to Adrian Peterson! Not even Brad Childress could screw that up. Farve says he doesn't want to stick it to the Packers, but he's not ready to let them off the hook yet either.
Meanwhile, what about poor Aaron Rodgers. He waited 3 years to get his shot
to be a starting quarterback, and this week he had to watch Greta Van Susteren
to see if he was still number 1 on the depth chart.
The Pack say they would want Farve as a backup. So here's another visual,
you got Aaron Rodgers jogging to the line with a living legend lurking on the sideline. He won't need heat from the opposition's defensive line to feel pressure, it would be there on every pass.
In the world of sports, there are many great athletes who said goodbye only to say hello again. Remember Michael Jordan, George Foreman, Roger Clemens, even Ricky Williams, they all came back and performed well.
O.K., Ricky just came back for the check.
But there is still something to be said for Lions Running Back Barry Sanders. He walked away during his prime and never came back again. No teasing the media with hints of another comeback, just a long walk off into the Sunset.
With Packers camp opening July 27th, team officals are hoping the circus
won't be coming to town. But that might depend on whether Brett Farve is.
