« Dynamo Trying To Move Into First Place In West |

| Texans Barber ready for hockey challenge »
Our nation's capital is a quagmire on this Thursday morning ....and I'm not talking about the political situation here or the presidential election. The Dynamo soccer team is still scheduled to be greeted at the White House ..... but Washington D.C. is digging out today from a major mass of thunderstorms that pounded the area for several hours yesterday. As we waited out a weather delay during Wednesday night's Dynamo vs DC United MLS game .... I told the producer in the truck that from my vantage point in one of the RFK team dugouts that the field had turned into a "quagmire." His response was,"Hey great use of the word quagmire." I said ..."Thanks ..I'll make sure and use it once the game resumes......." Well, the game never resumed ...and after playing less than 16 minutes of a scheduled 90 minute match ..... the game was finally called after a 2 hour wait ..... and postponed to a later date. It looks like that date will be sometime in July .... around the time the Dynamo is scheduled to play a Super-Liga game up here. There are many images I take away from this place after yesterday's storm. There's the image of the White House being pelted by rain in every other weather-cam shot aired by the local news stations. In Houston it's common to punch up different stationary cameras around the city to show what the weather is doing outside .....and one of the most over-used shot that local news stations take is the one from Galveston ...showing the waves coming up on the beath there. Well, up here ....as I found out yesterday ...the most over-used camera shots is the one of the White House. It was just weird seeing it punched up so much. I mean when you see the White House on TV something important is supposed to be happening right?? Do they have to use that camera shot to show the winds are picking up?? Another image I take away is of the players sliding and slipping while trying to play a professional sport. It was ridiculous. It reminded me of a game my youngest son and I used to play alot with a football. We called it "sloshball" because the wetter and muddier you got ....the better it was. We loved to play it in the rain ....when he was younger. I also will take away the image of the water cascading down the steps in the RFK dugouts ....like a waterfall. Our equipment was soaked and we were all happy when the game was finally called by MLS officials. It was a mess. I felt like I was on hurricane or tropical storm duty back at Ch-11 in Houston. In fact ... one of the local news crews got a shot that most news directors in my business would die for. While a Ch-4 news crew was video-taping the storm while driving down a street and huge tree actually fell onto a car. The photographer captured the entire incident on video .....and then a news director's dream occurred ... the reporter bolted out of the car and got in the middle of the action as rescue workers tried to free the man from his damaged car. When they pulled him out ...the Ch-4 reporter was helping pull him to safety ...and then he immediately had the exclusive interview. News consultants will be showing video of this story to every station around the country soon ...and no doubt they'll be asking why more reporters haven't been jumping into the fray and get involved like this guy did. I finally got dried out .... but Thursday morning .... much of the area is still without power ...the local trains aren't running because there are so many downed trees over the tracks ...and a number of local schools told there students to stay home today. Yes, our beautiful nation's capital is currently a quagmire.....and don't even get me started on politics. |
