Draft pick turns Toyota Center into Comedy Central

3:49 PM Fri, Jun 27, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

Lights, camera, and action! Rockets draft pick Joey Dorsey is ready for his closeup. The former Memphis star, along with the Rockets other draft pick, Donte' Greene of Syracuse met with the Houston media today. Were they nervous? Maybe a little but in
Dorsey's case it didn't show. He was under the spotlight, and he loved the hot lights.

At 6'9 and 265 lbs, his personality is as large as his derriere, and that's pretty big. But Dorsey was also very funny. The Rockets comedy routine started when owner Les Alexander's cell phone went off, as Rick Adelman was answering a question. Adelman...

Astros In Shambles?? I Don't Think So.

5:35 PM Thu, Jun 26, 2008 |

Shawn Chacon was a longshot to help the Astros out in 2008 ...but the fact is ... early in the season ...he pitched well. Trouble is ...when he started pitching poorly ... he started making trouble for himself. Now he's gone ... but the Astros have some work to do ... to restore their soiled reputation.

Oops, Imus did it again

4:38 PM Wed, Jun 25, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

I couldn't believe it. Don Imus has managed to do what several high priced spin doctors couldn't. What Cowboys owner Jerry Jones couldn't. With just his big mouth, Imus made Adam "don't call me Pacman" Jones look like a good guy.

By now, surely you've heard the comment. Imus and Warner Wolf were talking about Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones troubled past. Pacman has been arrested 6 times on various charges. At one point Imus asked "What color is he?" Wolf responded by saying "He's African-American." To this Imus said, "Well, there you go. Now we know."
Later Imus indicated that he w...

Astros Fans Impatient ... But Management Holding Fast

9:57 AM Wed, Jun 25, 2008 |

Roy Oswalt is the starting pitcher for the Astros tonight .... but he takes the mound knowing that his name is being thrown around in the latest trade rumors involving his club and others. He says,"I haven't heard a thing. No one has talked to me." ...

Is T-Mac on the trading block?

As far as Superstars and their quirks go, Tracy McGrady is better than the rest. He doesn't have his personal recliner next to his locker. He always makes himself available to the press, even when its not in his best interest. He also attends most team functions.

On the court he's still got the goods. The guy can create his own shots, and in the N.B.A., that's still one of the most sought after qualities.
So what is it that makes so many fans want to see the Rockets deal their main man? Personally, I hate speculation. But right now there is a lot of it going around. Most of it is silly, b...

21st Century Baseball

3:35 PM Fri, Jun 20, 2008 |
Carleton Cole

Baseball fans have come to expect arrogance from Yankee management, but this week's quote from Co-Chairman Hank Steinbrenner may be the topper, "My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century. They need to grow up and join the 21st century." The younger Steinbrenner is frustrated because his ace pitcher Chien-Ming Wang injured his foot while running the bases during an interleague game against the Astros. Since the game was played in Houston, it was played under National League rules, meaning pitcher have to bat and run the bases. Sorry Hank, the experiment called the "desi...

Without Tiger, can Rocco save the tour?

4:50 PM Wed, Jun 18, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

The news that Tiger Woods will have season ending knee surgery to repair torn ligaments sent shockwave through the P.G.A. Tour. After all, what are the Pips without Gladys Knight. Can you imagine the Dave Matthews Band without Dave Matthews. I can promise you commissioner Tim Finchim isn't looking forward to life without his biggest attraction no matter what he says.

Tour veteran Kenny Perry put it this way, "Tiger is our tour." Never was that statement more clear than after Woods won the U.S. Open playing with a double stress fracture of his left tibia, and torn ligaments in his left knee. Usua...

The Texans signed unrestricted free agnet Rosevelt Colvin today. Colvin won a couple of Super Bowl rings while with his last team ... the Patriots....but he suffered a foot injury last November. Now the Texans are gambling on him being healthy again.

Just How Bad Is The Astros Pitching Depth??

3:40 PM Thu, Jun 12, 2008 |
Matt Musil

It's so bad that when starting pitcher Brian Moehler walked opposing pitcher Ben Sheets in the 2nd inning ...in the middle of a 5-run rally .... Manager Cecil Cooper left Moehler in the game. Moehler later yielded 2 runs in the 5th to put the game out of reach ....but good grief .... when a pitcher isn't pulled after yielding multiple homers plus walking the opposing pitcher ......a team has major pitching issues.

Texans Barber ready for hockey challenge

4:30 PM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

After playing at Minnesota adjusting to the Houston heat and humidity has been a challenge for Texans Safety Dominique Barber. I talked to him after practice on Thursday and he was grateful for a breeze that made the workout a little more bearable. But the weather isn't the only thing he's adjusting to.

Barber is a huge hockey fan. Unfortunately, Houston isn't exactly hockey central. "The Red Wings are my favorite team and they won last night so I'm pumped," Barber told me. But this guy is not just a spectator. He lettered two years in hockey in high school. Barber went on to say, "That was a l...

Washington D.C. Quagmire

5:25 AM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |
Matt Musil

Our nation's capital is a quagmire on this Thursday morning ....and I'm not talking about the political situation here or the presidential election. The Dynamo soccer team is still scheduled to be greeted at the White House ..... but Washington D.C. is digging out today from a major mass of thunderstorms that pounded the area for several hours yesterday.

Dynamo Trying To Move Into First Place In West

5:03 PM Wed, Jun 04, 2008 |
Matt Musil

As rain falls in Washington D.C. late this afternoon ...the Dynamo are set to take on D.C. United at Robert F. Kennedy Memmorial Stadium. The Dynamo will once again be without captain Wade Barrett ...and defender Eddie Robinson ...who's suspended for another game for his retaliation in the Dallas game last week. The Dynamo team has never beaten D.C. United here ... .but the last game they played here was memorable ... they beat New England for the MLS Cup 6 months ago.

A coin flip propelled Bellaire to State

4:54 PM Wed, Jun 04, 2008 |
Butch Alsandor

As good as the Bellaire Cardinals are, their run to the State Baseball Tournament proved you have to be good and lucky. In some ways it came down to a coin flip. Bellaire and Westside flipped a coin to determine whether their series would be a one game playoff, or a best of 3 series.
Bellaire coach Rocky Manuel won the flip and opted for the best of three series. The rest is history, and the Cardinals will be gunning for their 8th State Title this weekend. Bellaire went for the series because they have more good pitchers than Paris Hilton has shoes. They proved it, blanking the Wolves twice on Saturday...

Astros Ready For Impact Draft

First year General manager Ed Wade wants to make sure his team does a solid job in the draft on Thursday ...and to that end ..... he's been working with all of his scouts to determine what this organization needs most. First off .... they need quality at every position .... but look for them to get a big bat first.

Do the Olympic Games matter anymore?

5:16 PM Tue, Jun 03, 2008 |
Carleton Cole

News Item: Ashley Harkleroad will turn down a berth on the US Olympic team.
And so it goes. Do the Olympic Games matter any more?
Once upon a time the Olympics were billed as a time when the entire world came together to watch the top athletes in their sports. The idea, sport could at least for a couple of weeks give the world a break from all the global conflicts. Even if it was a nice fairy tale, it was an honor to "bring home the gold." Today that golden shine is tarnished.
On the very same day Harkleroad said she was turning down a berth to represent her country, Antonio Pettigrew agree...
