A few years ago I was approached by representatives of the local skating community about a potential downtown skatepark. At the time .... there was an indoor facility (Van's Skate park) open just outside the loop on I-10. Now ... though there is a first class outdoor skate park with a scenic view of the downtown skyline. The park will officially open on Sunday June 1st. The Houston Parks Board and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up with Lee and Joe Jamail's donation of cash ...to make this happen. "It's great to see the wheels turning on such a special addition to our parks scene," said Mayor Bill White. "We can't thank the Jamails and the other donors enough for their vision and generosity." The park is named after Lee and Joe Jamail in appreciation of a generous gift donated by the Jamail family. "This is a park that my mom would have been very proud to see realized in Houston," said Randall Jamail, son of Lee and Joe Jamail. The Jamail gift, along with funding from several leading Houston Families, the City of Houston, Huffington Foundation, the Houston Downtown Management District and several other Houstonians have been used to construct and open the park. The Grand Opening day events include a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. with Mayor Bill White & the Jamail family. Activities during the rest of the afternoon will rotate between open public skating sessions and professional skateboarder "jam sessions." Local DJs Squincy Jones and Dayta will be spinning tunes to keep the crowd hyped. I am so stoked!! Not for myself ...mind you ...but for the skating community that has waited so long for a downtown skatepark. I'm also happy for local shop owners .... who may get a break now from skaters who like to perform tricks on their skateboards close to their places of business.
