A pair of Houston-area junior college teams are headed to the Junior College (a.k.a.) JUCO World Series in softball and baseball. We got the good news from the San Jacinto College and Alvin Community College public affairs departments this afternoon.
San Jac softball headed to World Series
HOUSTON - The San Jacinto College softball team is poised and ready to take a shot at its fist national championship this week at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in Plant City, Florida.
As the twelfth seed, San Jac will face fifth seeded Tallahassee Community College Thursday at 10 a.m. in the opening round. This is the first-ever appearance at the national tournament for San Jac.
"We're incredibly happy to be in the national tournament," said head coach Kelly Saenz. "We're going to do our best, as we've done all year, and we can't wait to get out on the field."
San Jac enters the national tournament with an overall record of 37-15 after winning the Region XIV tournament for only the third time in school history last weekend in Brenham. Freshman pitcher Kelsey McClain, a Pasadena Memorial High School grad, pitched all four games during the regional tournament, and leads the team in innings pitched (146.0), ERA (2.30), strikeouts (108.0) and wins (16).
Alvin baseball makes first JUCO World Series appearance
The Alvin Community College Dolphins made a clean sweep in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV Baseball Tournament May 10-13, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and clenched the championship for the first time in the college's history.
"It was incredible," ACC Baseball Head Coach Bryan Alexander said of winning the tournament. "I couldn't be happier for the players."
"They kept telling me all year long that they wanted to be the group to get us there," he added. "They knew how long and how hard we've been trying to make it - and how close we've come."
In the first game on May 10, the Dolphins took out Texarkana 5-3. With a late 10:30 p.m. start of the second game on May 11, ACC finished off Navarro 10-6 by 2 a.m.
The Dolphins are among 10 teams that will go on to play in the Junior College NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. Next week.
