There has been a lot of speculation about what the Texans are doing right now with their quarterbacks. They recently signed free agent Quinn Gray from Jacksonville and he is solid but untested. I think they have one of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Matt Schaub leading the way and they may have the best backup QB in the league in Sage Rosenfels. There has been a whole lot of speculation on Sage being moved for a draft choice but head coach Gary Kubiak and General Manager Rick Smith are not playing that card right now but it's a day to day kind of thing. The fact is, the are holding three aces. Everyone of them can perform and do it well. Sage really showed his value after Schaub was injured last season. It's understandable he wants to play more. If he ends up here, that won't happen as long as Schaub stays healthy.
I spoke with Sage on Friday night at the NCAA regional at Reliant Stadium. He was sitting on the front row, with his little guy, watching Texas cut down the Stanford Cardinal. It's a frustrating situation for him at this time in his career because he knows he can play and win in this league. He is also a great team guy and knows the Texans are headed in the right direction.
There are times you have to be patient and let things evolve. Kubiak recently said he never wants to be unsettle with depth at the quarterback position because so many things are at stake. He felt a little exposed last season not knowing what he would have done if Sage would have been injured.
If you were Smith right now or Kubiak, how would you handle things? Would you be looking to deal Sage for picks or players or keep building what is becoming a solid foundation this organization so desperately needs? For the first time in the history of this franchise, they have favorable options with the guys calling the plays. That's making progress. Let me know your thoughts!
