Texans Improve Ballclub

At the end of the draft .... General Manager Rick Smith and Head Coach Gary Kubiak ... were giving out a big sigh of relief. They had entered the weekend .... with a list of needs ....and except for the edge pass rusher they wanted ..... they basically filled every other need.

The final pick of the Washington State quarterback ....Alex Brink ... was a head scratcher ..... but every other pick made sense to me. When the two offensive linemen that they really wanted were picked just ahead of them ... .the Texans traded down ....picked up two extra picks ....plus they were under the impression Duane Brown was going to be there at #26.

First round pick Duane Brown seems like a great kid ....he's good sized at 6-4 1/2 and 300 plus. Now it's going to be interesting to see how he can pick up the speed of the pro game. The 3rd round picks ... cornerback Antwauen Molden out of Eastern Kentucky ... and West Virginia running back Steve Slaton are expected to contribute immediately. Molden as a nickel back and on special teams .... and Slaton as a 3rd down back ...and on special teams. 4th round pick Xavier Adibi .. an outside linebacker out of Virginia Tech will be given the opportunity to battle for a starting job. 5th round pick Frank Okam ... the big defensive tackle out of Texas ....will also be given a chance to get playing time. He's big ....He's pretty agile ...and he's smart. The Texans have no one else with his size. 6th round choice Dominique Barber ... a safety out of Minnesota .....is the brother of Cowboys running back Marion Barber. Defensive coordinator Richard Smith says his bloodlines made a difference for him ...and even though he's not a real big safety ....he's a hard hitter with good ball skills. The Texans took Washington State QB Alex Brink with their 7th round pick ...their final one ....and I still don't know why. They already have 3 quality quarterbacks on the roster..... but how knows maybe they're still thinking of dealing Sage Rosenfels. All in all I think the Texans did a good job in the draft. I thought the Chiefs did the best job of all. I thought Pittsburgh did well ....but two teams that have me wondering ....are the Titans and the Bears. Once again ... Tennessee did not draft a wide receiver high .... a real super talent to help out Vince Young ...and Chicago ..for some reason .....didn't draft a quarterback again .....for like the 3rd straight year. What are some GM's thinking??
