Like Father, like Son

One of the best things about my job is you can just drop in on practice and see how the local teams are progressing. This week I popped in on the Houston Cougars to checkout their first spring training under coach Kevin Sumlin.
The first thing I noticed about Sumlin was he's really a likeable guy. Its a quality that's
a must when you are recruiting young men into your program.

I also met his father Bill, and realized right away where Kevin got his personality from.
Bill, who's now retired was also a coach. For the Sumlin clan, family life centered around
football. Kevin never played for his dad, but according to Bill that didn't stop him from
coaching his son. "When kevin came home after practice, we would have our own
sessions." "I would go over things with him making sure he understood the fundamentals of the game."
Since then Bill has been following Kevin's coaching career going to as many games
as possible . Kevin jokingly said , " dad's in town to critique me." But he's really here
to support his son. You could tell they have a great relationship . Kevin has even
added some of his father's drills to the Cougars practice session.
Bill is planning to attend as many Cougar games as he can in the fall. He says you
have that type of freedom when you are retired.
