I was at Redstone on Thursday watching Adam Scott roll to a course record 63 in round 1 of the Shell Houston Open. His round gave me a new respect for golfers.
We all think of Tiger as the ironman of golf, but Scott showed a lot of determination and focus during his round. At the end of the day, Scott shared first place with Johnson Wagner
who tied the course record matching Adam's 9 under . But the conditions Scott played under made his round really special.
The defending champ came to Houston with a fever and swollen glands around his throat.
Actually, I had a mild case of strep throat myself this week. But Scott handle his sickness
a lot better. I was in bed for 2 days and came out and followed Phil Mickelson for 5 holes and thought I might die. I was absolutely miserable, sweating none stop. Meanwhile Mr. Scott, who's 18 years younger by the way looked like he was on a stroll through the park.
He marched 18 holes with his head held high shooting a 9 under par round. If the heat got to him he never let it show. He did see a doctor after his round and promised to lay low tonight ,but what an incredible performance.
During his post round interviews I asked how important was it for him to get off to
a good start? He said, "It was very important, being the defending champ I
felt extra motivation to come out and play well. I'm just not ready to let that trophy go yet.
Scott also added, I didn't feel well when the round started , but the more birdies I got , the more confident I became.
