Historically speaking ...it's a toss up between Texas and Memphis in NCAA basketball games played. Memphis has never lost a tournament game in Houston .....the Tigers are 5 & 0 ...but even more impressive .....Texas is 7-0 since 1990 within the state borders. That's right they have now lost an NCAA tournament game in Texas since then. Today's game should be the best of the day. I believe Cinderella Davidson will lose it's glass slipper today versus Kansas .....but here in Houston #1 seed Memphis versus #2 seed Texas could be a classic. The pace will be uptempo .....and there will be plenty of flash and not much trash. The way Memphis players are talking ...you would think that they were the underdogs. No doubt ....many experts have predicted earlier in this tournament that they would be upset .....but it hasn't happened. And that first half of basketball that they played Friday night versus Michigan State ....was phenomenal. On the other side though ....Texas has been outstanding also ....and the 'Horns inside game is coming along. D. J Augustine again should be a difference maker ....but the wild card ...as usual ..is guard A. J. Abrams. If Abrams is hitting .....the 'Horns usually win ....but if he's struggling ......the team struggles. Memphis knows this ....and I expect the Tigers to direct the defense at him. It's up to the rest of the 'Horns to make up the difference if they limit him. I've picked Texas to win it all next Monday night. That pick came before the start of the tournament ....and I certainly haven't changed my opinion. This should be fun ....and Reliant Park executive Shea Guinn just told me today's crowd will certainly top Friday night's crowd of 32,000. |
