The official stats aren't out yet ...but I had D.J. Augustin with 22 points to lead the Longhorns. Brook Lopez led Stanford with 37 ...but the all around game of the 'Horns was just too much for the Cardinal. I thought early on .... When Stanford got great a contribution from backup forward Taj Finger .... That the overall depth of Texas wasn't going to be the factor I had counted on going in.
But through the second half .... Coach Rick Barnes .... Kept subbing in people off the bench and they kept getting the job done. Props to Barnes ...for his strategy of getting Dexter Pittman in games early in the NCAA tournament ...to get him a little seasoning before the Sweet 16. Pittman didn't play a lot of minutes ...but he made them count ....by closely guarding Brook Lopez ...and making a couple of baskets. His presence along with the continued attacking of the basket by the Texas guards .... Was one of the big differences.
I thought going in ...it would be hard for Stanford to keep up if they had to rely on their outside shooting ...and they just couldn't do it. Texas on the other hand ...had good outside shooting plus their guards were more able to create their own shots in and around the basket.
The bottom line .... Texas wins big 82 to 62 and they move on to play the winner of tonight's late game between Memphis and Michigan State. |
