| How sweet it is: Texas beats Miami, heads to Houston for Sweet 16 »
HOUSTON -- Just as Brooks and Dunn closed the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at Reliant Stadium, the workers started rolling in.
But this isn't a normal year. Houston is pulling double duty, hosting not only the rodeo, but also a bracket of the NCAA College Basketball Tournament just five days later. "Typically the move out takes 7 to 10 days, and the move in for the NCAA Tournament, they allot two weeks. We are doing both of these in 82 hours," Reliant Park's Shea Guinn said. And that meant three weeks worth of rodeo seemed to disappear in the blink of an eye Sunday. Fifty trucks were in Reliant, moving over 400,000 yards of dirt out of the building. The change will take nearly 250 employees. It's a task that involves everything from flooring to lighting to seating. When it's all done, the stadium will be a 43,000-seat basketball arena. The NCAA is trying out a brand new seating arrangement this year that will involve bringing in risers and creating more seats. Because of that, the entire court is being elevated a few feet. The hope is to bring fans even closer to the excitement of the Sweet 16. Reliant will host the regional semifinals on Friday and the regional final on Sunday. By: Leticia Juarez |
