More On Hunter Pence ....Out One Week .....

Hunter Pence ...the starting right fielder for the Astros in 2008 .... will miss the first week of spring training workouts ..... after sustaining numerous cuts and lacerations on his hands and knees .....while accidentally jumping through a sliding glass door last night.

Hunter tells me that he and his girlfriend were going to try out the hot tub at the residence where he's staying here in Kissimmee, Fla. last night around 9:30PM and after going out the sliding glass window ...he left it open. Then before he was going to get into the hot tub ...he thought he would run in a go to the bathroom ....but little did he know that his girlfriend had closed the door behind her ...and as he jumped off the deck into the house ..... he crashed right through the sliding glass. He told me he felt fortunate that he didn't fall down .... because had he not stayed upright ...the cuts would have been devastating. He said he looked like "something out of a horror movie" with all the blood dripping off of him. He told me "I wasn't drunk or anything we just wanted to relax in our hot tub for the first time since we got the hot water turned on."

Pence says he immediately went to the Surprise, Florida Hospital. (I'm sure Hunter thought that place was aptly named.) Anyway ....Pence showed me the bloody finger that was hurt the worst ...on his right hand and he's wearing a brace on his left knee ....to immobilize it so the stitches won't tear out. Heis covered with small cuts all over his hands, legs and face. Pence left camp here around 9:45AM armed with what looked like "a slew" of antibiotics and told to go home and rest. Hunter told me he didn't get one bit of sleep last night.

As you can imagine ...he is totally frustrated with this situation ...but he says he's just concentrating on getting healthy and getting back on the field. He told me he's super excited about the season ahead ...and instead of feeling "unlucky" because this incident happened ... he says he feels "very lucky" because it could have turned out much worse.
