Here's What I Think....

I have watched Roger Clemens pitch in games and workout on practice fields enough to know that no one who's ever been a competitive athlete ....... has the ability to focus mentally on the task at hand better than him. But Wednesday ... in front of a Congressional Committee ... called to investigate illegal use of banned substances in Major League Baseball .... Roger got a "no decision."

I have to stop now ....'cause a flight attendant is glaring at me ... as we taxi away from the BWI airport terminal. More when I land in Houston.

(started again 4 hours later)
Okay ...I'm back in Houston ..and I'm still amazed at the polarized views that people have of this entire Clemens vs McNamee drama. Wednesday while listening to testimony by both men ...... there were times when I thought a comment was made that was very believable ..... but the reporters on either side of me ..... would be shaking their heads. After the proceedings attorney Rusty Hardin told me that he thought initially the general public were 80 to 90% against Roger .....but he thought that had changed over the past few weeks ...and he thought the testimony Wednesday helped his client more than hurt him. But judging from the general reaction I've been reading from around the country .....that might not be the case.

My assignment Wednesday was to document the proceedings not editorialize...and I didn't. But now here are a few of my thoughts. I still believe Clemens more than McNamee. I thought overall he did a credible job of answering the questions posed to him. And the only real surprise that I heard was when the talk turned to his wife, Debbie, getting injected with HGH.

No doubt Clemens had more to lose in this whole process than McNamee ...... but neither could be declared winners after this proceeding. If you've ever been involved in a legal proceeding in a courtroom and had someone wrongly accuse you of something ..... then you know the emotions that were running through that Congressional Committee room. If it were me though ....... if I was McNamee and I was certain of what I was saying was factual .... I would have turned right to Roger and said,"Dude ...come on ..'it is what it is' ..... you did tell me to inject you with this stuff ......stop lying!!" And if I were Clemens I would have said,"All right that's enough. I couldn't say anything in the recorded phone conversation because I would have been accused of tampering with a witness .... but you Brian are lying. I don't know your motives .... but you are lying and I am not going to hold my tongue any longer." But of course .... it's always easier to judge from the sideline ... than it is when you're in the middle of the fight. I wasn't being grilled Wednesday .... they were.

I thought McNamee came off like the admitted liar that he is .... but some of the things he said .... were believable. Clearly though ... .... Clemens didn't look like a saint either. At the end of the day .... these two men will someday really have their Judgement Day .... and then and maybe only then ..... will they tell God exactly what happened.

It was a sad day for baseball and all of it's fans. I thought Virginia Foxx ... the Congresswoman from North Carolina had one of the best comments during this highly partisan hearing held by the Comittee On Oversight and Government Reform. She said,"We are wasting billions of dollars today on this there are more important issues to deal with." Amen to that...but I do think this .... I think more than anything else ... Congress wasn't out to Clemens but it was out to get MLB Commissioner Bud Selig off his high horse and Players Association Union leader Donald Fehr to get off his. Baseball needs cleaning up and if the men in power don't do it .. ... there will be more ugly hearings like yesterday's in the not so distant future.
