Maybe its finally time for all the football writers with Super Bowl M.V.P. votes to look beyond O.K, glamour boy doesn't exactly conjour up a picture of Eli Manning. He would be better cast in a Leave it to Beaver remake than the lasted Boy Band. While Eli was good, he passed for two touchdowns and led the Giants on the game winning drive, the G-Men's defensive line was better. Their constant pressure on Tom Brady was the real reason New York pulled off the stunning upset of the Patriots. Tom Brady, the real Glamour Boy in Super Bowl XLII, was hit more than boxer Butterbean on Fight Night. Brady was sacked five times and was harrassed the whole night. At one point, it appeared he was spending as much time with Justin Tuck as his super model girlfriend. Tuck menaced the Patriots for five tackles, sacking Brady twice. Former TSU star, Michael Strahan, had two tackles, one sack and a blocked pass. Osi Umenyiora added three tackles and a sack. The Giants Front 4 never gave Brady a chance to go down field to Randy Moss. It was obvious Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnulo's game plan was simple - hit Brady and hit him harder next time. The Giants' defensive line took away the run, the deep pass, and kept the Patriots off balance the entire night. Eli did pull off "The Great Escape" breaking away from a would-be sack, completing a 32 yard prayer to David Tyree. But, it really was a fluke play. You might even call it lucky, but there was nothing lucky about the defensive line's performance. They played steady for 4 quarters, doing all the dirty work, the heavy lifting if you will. These guys were the True MVP's in Super Bowl XLII. Without their will to win, the Patriots would be 19-0 today. |
